I've been following this story and it's a very difficult subject. On one hand, laws are laws and they've been broken.
On the other hand it seems mightily irresponsible to turf people out when they have nowhere to go. If they travel, it's back to fields and verges with no running water, electricity or sanitation. This isn't fair on anyone let along families with children.
The truth is racism against Roma is the only form of socially acceptable racism left. If you made a remark against anyone's race, people would look aghast. Make a comment about Gypsies and everyone will agree/laugh.
There needs to be a UK-wide series of caravan parks. But no-one wants them 'in their back yard' so what's the solution?
Do we get a situation like in the rest of Europe where Gypsies are attacked and killed? I spoke to one guy from Bulgaria who happened to open his front door for some reason, only to find a bomb on his doorstep. He got his family out just in time but it was only luck they survived.
Truth is, it's all very well upholding the law but where are these families supposed to go?
