Kelly1978 · 29/09/2005 10:56

prob wont if he has been given 40 years. Who said that? the judge or the home secretary?

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/09/2005 10:56

Still think that they should bring back hanging, or if they are prison, feed them on bread and water and make them sleep on straw like they did years ago, they get it too easy in prison these days.

FROM BBC NEWS WEBSITE

Huntley receives 40-year sentence

Huntley was convicted of the schoolgirls' murders in 2003
Soham murderer Ian Huntley will spend at least 40 years in prison, a High Court judge has ruled.
Mr Justice Moses, who presided over the former school caretaker's 2003 trial, said the 31-year-old will not be considered for parole for 40 years.

Huntley received two life terms for the 2002 murders of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, both 10, in Soham, Cambs.

Changes to the sentencing powers of judges led to the delay in deciding Huntley's tariff.

Is he still suing for getting boiling water thrown on him?

moozoboozo · 29/09/2005 11:06

Good. I hope they throw away the key

oliveoil · 29/09/2005 11:06

well good, but there are plenty more people getting away with far more lenient sentences just because they are not as high profile.

You see people who do financial crimes (fraud etc) getting higher sentences than crimes against people ffs, what's all that about??

TinyGang · 29/09/2005 11:10

Good! Hope no-one comes along in a few years trying to make a case for it to be reviewed for some spurious reason though.

Agree with you Oliveoil. A 73 year old woman put in prison the other day for refusing to pay £53 council tax

Blossomhill · 29/09/2005 11:12

Agree 40 years he could be out. He'll be about 70 by then. This man should never be allowed out into society, ever.

I thing they should just string the bastard up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TinyGang · 29/09/2005 11:24

But people do come along with these notions of getting people out because they are now 'sorry'

Either that or you find out they've been living a fairly comfortable life over the years with much of what they want catered for.

doormat · 29/09/2005 11:26

TG agree just have to look at Myra Hindley and Lord Longford as an example
totally wrong IMO

AQnd the Batards who killed James Bulger, living a cushy life now where no-one knows who they are, I know they were kids, but it does not mean they are not evil IMO.

doormat · 29/09/2005 11:32

and it is us the taxpayers who fund their secret identities,
the govt really takes the piss imo

QueenOfQuotes · 29/09/2005 11:36

oh yeah bet they're living a real 'cushy' life, always watching over their shoulder, having to lie about who they are, and about their past so they don't get lynched.

What's the point of sending people to jail (who then serve their time) if people then say "well I thnk they shoud have got x,y,z" - and the best one "I don't care if they've served their time they still deserve x,y,z".

That's the whole point of the justice system - isn't it? They charged, found guilty and serve their time (perhaps not as long as some think they should = but they ARE in prison -

which is anything but a 'cushy' life - anyone fancy living in their house/garden for the next 10-20yrs - never being allowed to step outside the front door, only having friends or family over for short periods of time (not at YOUR choosing), and them only being allowed to see you in the one roomm, no picking up the phone to call a friend every time your feeling down........and then lets not forget the guilt that many criminals DO feel, the despair at the mess they've landed themselves in, the isolation.

What do you want - to go back to the 'old' days - of a dark cell, rats on the floor, 'hole' in the corner for the toilet, no visitors, no bed etc etc???

I bet lots of you will say "YES" to things like this............but then how many of us have children. I'm sure 99.99999999% of our children will grow up and never have any trouble with the law. But I bet there's going to be at least a tiny percentage who (sadly) will - would you want your child (in 10,15,20yrs time) to be kept in conditions like they were kept in over 100yrs ago?

The Justice System (while we may not agree with many of the sentences) is there for a reason - to punish criminals.

QUOTE FROM BBC WEBSITE

His former girlfriend Maxine Carr was jailed for three-and-a-half years for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

She was freed from jail and given a new identity in May 2004.
