i agree Kaz.

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:32

what area of policing do you work in Kaz?

KAZ09 · 24/08/2005 21:36

Rory's school are holding a Service tomorrow. I was speaking to one of my neighbours, whose young daughter goes to the school and she was saying that she was unsure what to say to her daughter (see my earlier thread re my ds) as she did not want to confuse her with what school may have said. She was going to phone and ask school for advice as her daughter wanted to go up to the "flowers" area after school and she was due to get many questions.
I appreciate that the school are very much under pressure, but I think it would have been beneficial to send a small note home with the students informing their parents what the children have been informed.

Child Protection

henshake · 24/08/2005 21:37

Expatinscotland what does 'life w/o parole' mean? Sorry I'm probably sounding thick.

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:38

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:38

Jampots - No my ds goes to Woodlands Nursery which is not far from Rory's school.

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:43

Kaz - a police car has just drawn up outside my neighbour (about 3-4 doors down) with the blue light on but not flashing. What does that mean>? 2 police people got out and went into the house

henshake · 24/08/2005 21:46

I have to say it,recently I came to the conclusion that there is no God.

How can there be when babies and children are murdered, assaulted, neglected and sexually abused. I hate turning the radio or tv on nowadays.

I firmly believe that the school should notify any parent when their child misses registration and/or any class.

Parents have a responsibility to ensure their child attends school & so it should be that the school has a responsibility to the parent for when the child misses school.

I believe there are fines that have either been introduced or will be introduced when your child is truant. The school should also have to pay these fines if they don't inform us of missing children.

When my children start school I will want a guarantee that they will be safe, if I don't get that guarantee then I will be educating them at home.

KAZ09 · 24/08/2005 21:48

Jampots - Probably somebody has foned 999. Keep watching - I'm intrigued. wherabouts are you

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:49

brum

tabitha · 24/08/2005 21:50

henshake, you might be interested in this . It looks like the school itself is responsible for their policy on pupil absences. My ds's previous school did contact parents if their child was absent without the school being informed by parents but his current one doesn't - I have just finished typing a letter to the headmistress asking if they're going to review this policy in light of what has happened.

jampots · 24/08/2005 21:55

i think its a good idea for schools to contact the parents in the event that the parents havent already contacted the school concerning an absence.

tabitha · 24/08/2005 21:57

I think its just common sense for a lot of reasons, but when ds first started at his current school and I suggested it, the school basically poo-pooed the idea saying it wasn't needed and would be unworkable due to the numbers of pupils involved.
I sincerely hope they change their minds now.

tabitha · 24/08/2005 21:59

Kaz,

how long have you been in the Police (sincere apologies for changing the subject) - think I might know you.

jampots · 24/08/2005 22:00

yes. maybe we should contact our LEA's to push for new standards. Id happily go in voluntarily for a few hours if necessary and contact parents whose kids hadnt turned up for school.

KAZ09 · 24/08/2005 22:00

Jampots - keep me posted. I'm going downstairs to start ironing and watch "Lost"

jampots · 24/08/2005 22:01

ok g/night

henshake · 24/08/2005 22:02

Tabitha I hope you succeed in changing the policy at your DS's school.

tabitha · 24/08/2005 22:05

me too, henshake
ds usually walks to school from his childminders and it terrifies me to think that if he didn't turn up no-one would be any the wiser for over 6 hours.

expatinscotland · 24/08/2005 22:24

Yes, it means the convict is sentenced lifetime imprisonment with no chance for parole. No hearings. Of course, the convict can appeal the sentence, and possibly be granted a new trial, but w/the amount of DNA and forensic evidence available in the US, it's sometimes not a good option.

In some states, it is an automatic sentence for certain crimes - such a 'capital' murder (murder in conjunction with rape, robbery or kidnap, murder of a law enforcement officer, paramedic or fire brigade, or murder of a child under 10 years of age). It varies by state, as does the age at which a defendant is tried as an adult.

expatinscotland · 24/08/2005 22:34

TBH, coming from the US, I was really shocked at the light sentencing here. No, I'm not a death penalty supporter, but I do support long, tough sentences for serious felonies, repeat felons (including drunk drivers) and life with no parole sentences for egregious crimes such as 1st degree murder - premeditated - and capital murder.

Light sentences are a grave injustice, not just to the victim and his/her family but to society as a whole. And also the law enforcement officers whose job it is to carry out the law. It's a real slap in the face to them considering how they put their lives on the line every day for people. It's sickening, IMO.

When my parents first visited here, they were absolutely gobsmacked that people attacked firemen. That is a felony in their home state of Texas, and one that carries a very serious penalty. You just don't mess w/fire brigade, even in the roughest of neighbourhoods. They ALWAYS have police escort as it is.

I can't believe councils can actually find people to even put up w/such behaviour, tbh.

Got a problem w/overcrowded prisons, build more jails!

One state, Alabama, has brought back chain gangs. Prisoners clean highway layby's, grow products to make their own clothes and food, etc. One inmate complained that this violated his human rights. Until a reporter asked him how he felt about the human rights of the man he murdered for $2. He didn't have an answer to that.

KAZ09 · 25/08/2005 00:15

Tabitha - Ive been in police for 11 years. Are you a cop?
