Is this the lad you were referring to? Very sad whoever's child it is.

Toothache · 22/08/2005 10:38

Thats him Freckle. I think that photo will haunt me forever. Poor lad.

It was only a few miles from where I live.

Freckle · 22/08/2005 10:41

And they wonder why mothers decide to drive their children to the school gates. I bet his mum is wishing she'd dropped him at school rather than near it.

jampots · 22/08/2005 10:57

I agree Freckle.

jamboure · 22/08/2005 17:31

I sooooooo hope and pray this wee lad did not suffer.

this world is sooooooo evil. police have been at all schools in the area today.

ds was going to nursery and asked the officer if the helicopter found the boy

we told him last night that he had died but maybe not registered right now

the school my ds has just left would call childrens' parents if the they hadnt turned into school by 9.15 or hadnt been contacted by the parents to explain sickness or other absence - do any other schools do this?

Hulababy · 22/08/2005 18:21

jampots - secondary school I worked at did that too. e had a member of staff dedicated to that roll. She would use the registers and go through them and would then phone round any parents who hadn't already called to explain the child's absense. And she had a bike to cycle round to places if necessary.

jampots · 22/08/2005 18:23

i think its a fab idea myself

Hulababy · 22/08/2005 18:25

I agree, although some parents didn't like it and felt it was obtrusive and unnecessary. But when you see things like this it makes you realise that it doesn't matter - the child's safety is more important.

AuntyQuated · 22/08/2005 18:26

i did supply at a secondary school that had electronic registers, they automatically texted parents if their children didn't turn up to any session during the day. great idea

jamboure · 22/08/2005 18:34

A secondary school near to rory's does call/text parents if a child fails to register.

As it is a secondary school though all the kids have to do is attend registration and they leave. they have that many subjects it's not picked up on if they miss a certain class

This is just so sad - my heart goes out to the faily - my ds1 and this little boy share the same first name. I can't imagine the pain they will be feeling right now.

Toothache · 23/08/2005 08:58

Now its a murder enquiry.

At my kids' primary it wasn't required that you ring if they were off (although many parents did) - only that you sent a note in when they returned.

Maybe after this it will become compulsory - it would be a good thing.

Although who knows how long it would have taken before the school rang to check in this instance?

beety, they insist on a phone call from parents at both my boy's schools too, we're in Worcestershire, so deffo not just a London thing.

Toothache · 23/08/2005 11:30

When I was at school my sister 'dogged' school for 3 MONTHS before the school pulled me into the office and asked how she was?!?!?!?!?

trace2 · 23/08/2005 12:05

they found thr poor lad hes dead{sad}

jayzmummy · 23/08/2005 12:31

so very I hope they catch the murderer quickly.

Janh · 23/08/2005 14:04

His mum dropped him off near an underpass - picture of it here - the piece says that people are now reporting strangers hanging around in the area.

Poor woman. Can you imagine the "if onlies"

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 14:28

sorry but I wouldn't walk under there!
