Just seen that the Supreme Court have ruled that she cannot return to the UK, her Appeal has been unsuccessful.

@DemolitionBarbie
We shouldn't be removing people's citizenship for any reason. We can't just foist off our own home grown terrorists onto other countries
Exactly. Nobody “wants” this kind of person as a citizen. But a British criminal is still British.

RickiTarr · 26/02/2021 16:57
@RickiTarr
She was 15/16
No, I believe she was fifteen years old when she left Britain, unless all the reports are incorrect. Not 15/16.
So you think “15” doesn’t fall under the umbrella of “15/16”? Aha. Hmm

Cam77 · 26/02/2021 16:58

@RickiTarr
I’m truly sorry if you feel patronized. I’m sorry you feel that way.

unmarkedbythat · 26/02/2021 16:58

So many people with an apparent inability to understand that you can despise what Begum believes and did and have a strong belief she should face consequences for her actions, and at the same time be absolutely sure she has the right to a fair trial and due process and those consequences to be the result of those. Everyone has the right and we do not discriminate, that is what gives us the moral authority to judge.

These threads are so frustrating as they always descend into a mess of puffed up posters screaming at anyone who does not wish to abandon principles of justice that they are terrorist sympathisers.

(Btw, Letts already held Canadian citizenship when his British citizenship was revoked. Begum does not have citizenship of any other country, just a disputed right to apply for citizenship of Bangladesh.)

Cam77 · 26/02/2021 17:00

@RickiTarr
Sure. My pension advisor asked my age the other day:
“How old are you Cam77?”
“I’m thirty six/thirty seven”.

That’s how we all speak, right?

RickiTarr · 26/02/2021 17:04

(Btw, Letts already held Canadian citizenship when his British citizenship was revoked. Begum does not have citizenship of any other country, just a disputed right to apply for citizenship of Bangladesh.)

Now that seems the crux and seems to be disputed. There were several opinions, weren’t there about her entitlement to Bangladeshi citizenship? I remember various legal commentators writing about this a couple of years back.

The one that seemed most grounded in fact as the time was that the Bangladesh government were only disputing her otherwise inalienable claim to citizenship because of the circumstances and that any of her siblings applying would have been granted it as a matter of course.

So Bangladesh didn’t want her and were trying to wriggle out of taking her.

Additionally, Begum didn’t want to go to Bangladesh.

So that’s a lot of politicking and not strictly a matter purely of citizenship law.

Branleuse · 26/02/2021 17:08

Theyve made an example of her, which is hardly surprising. I cant seem to conjure up any sympathy for her. She chose her path

I am bored of hearing the groomed crap. She was an intelligent girl for a family of terrorist sympathisers and she is unrepentant.
Honestly, if Mumsnet had been around in the days of Myra hindley and rose west they’d be do gooders defending them.
Women and girls are capable of doing terrible things without big, bad men making them do so.

ginswinger · 26/02/2021 17:16

@Numicon

Join any death cults, *@ginswinger*? Thought not.
Never coerced into joining a death cult as a minor but did manage to do some really dumb stuff without any coercion at all. Most teenagers do.
Rosie2111 · 26/02/2021 17:18

To those keen to defend Shamina’s freedoms. You do know that, given the chance, she would delight in the murder of your British child?

Unfucked · 26/02/2021 17:21

She’s still a criminal @Rosie2111 , but she deserves the same treatment as other juvenile British criminals.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 26/02/2021 17:22

What have Bangladesh done to deserve her?

Rosie2111 · 26/02/2021 17:22

@Unfucked

Hardly comparable- an individual case of homicide/murder and drug mules vs someone who willingly joins a mass terrorist organisation that kills thousands and is organises terror attacks across Europe?

Derbee · 26/02/2021 17:23

Make an example of her. Hope she never gets back to the UK, and others decide not to follow in her footsteps.

Rosie2111 · 26/02/2021 17:23

@Unfucked

She’s had the same treatment as Jack Letts. Her father, on the other hand, has come off very lightly compared to his parents.

TableFlowerss · 26/02/2021 17:24

@RickiTarr

Thanks *@TableFlowerss*

I can’t believe she has such vehement supporters. Well I can, but I’d expect them to be other terrorists.

I can’t understand why she has so many supporters either.

There’s an excuse for everything these days.... ‘But they had a poor upbringing, their mam ran off, they got bullied when they were younger, they were brainwashed, they didn’t understand the implications...

It’s all bollocks! You get involved in shit like that, you pay price. Simple.

MrsBotibolsCruise · 26/02/2021 17:26

@Unfucked No. Just no. Those situations are not comparable and you are just shit-stirring trying to make this about race rather than deed.

There are a number of legitimate reasons to object to the ruling but pulling the race card is not one of them.

Unfucked · 26/02/2021 17:26

@Rosie2111 Doubt she could organise her way out of her paper bag - was she not just kept constantly pregnant or grieving a baby loss by her groomers/captors?

Lock her up in a British prison and throw away the key until it’s time for parole. Don’t just cut her adrift because she’s got the wrong skin colour.

twelly · 26/02/2021 17:27

I think what she did inexcusable, and appalling. However , she was 15 years old whilst that is above the age where criminal responsibility kicks in she was probably naive and acted under the influence of adults. I do not condone her behaviour however I do think she should not have had her citizenship taken away. If citizenship can be taken away for one person it could be taken away from anyone - that is not a good precedent.

LindaJoh · 26/02/2021 17:30

I think most as made some silly mistakes at people growing up, but she wasn't a child when she went out there, she could read & new the dangers.....so I'm sorry you make your bed you then have to lie in it Confused

Rosie2111 · 26/02/2021 17:32

The Supreme Court reviewed evidence from MI5 relating to the risk that Shamima poses to British citizens and decided that the risk of her return is too great. I sincerely hope that her sympathisers on here who are desperately trying to ‘prove’ the U.K. govt has acted in a racist way never experience the horror of having one of your loved ones blown to bits by a terrorist.

randomer · 26/02/2021 17:32

She said the Manchester bombing was justified. I think that gives quite a clear indication that she is not full of remorse

I would say the sky was pink if I was off my head/being tortured/had a gun held to my head/was psychotic.

toocold54 · 26/02/2021 17:36

No one is defending her and saying what she was right - they are saying she should be punished in the UK because she is British.

I hate when people are made out to be terrorist sympathisers just because they don’t wish a person to be treated like a terrorist would treat them.

I can guarantee that if someone came over here to join a terrorist organisation we would all be calling for them to be deported.
