Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

Hello again

A nice SA white tonight (veggie night here)...pours everyone a glass. I know ... I know...somehow I need wine after tramping through the snow ...

Will add:

"alcohol only allowed X times per week
(or 0 x per week if we are being strict)"

to the list.

I agree that a new body-clutter step per day would be too overwhelming.

How about we collate 30 or so tips/steps now and then I try and group them in to 4 categories .... and then I post 7 at the beginning of the week ... out of which we chose one each to follow? Or is that far too complicated. Dunno???? What do you think? Or should it be five groups depending on length of month??? Help! Should have worked this out before my second glass . I really cannot drink nowadays and maintain me full faculties...
Comes with age I'm afraid ...

Anyway, I will lists the body clutter steps in a separate post after this one. Thanks for posting them eveyrone.

PA I hope your dh comes home soon. He's probably just stuck in traffic, try not to worry (easier said than done I know)x

Yay!! Elliepac good to see you ...don't worry about tomorrow morning me darlin, I have it covered. And yes, v. impressive that you remembered.

Good luck traversing the forest tomorrow tibni ...

Just remembered I have to do some sewing tonight, so I had better have a black coffee and get to it.

See you tomorrow morning everyone and keep up the good work.

BTW helpwithcleaning this is the link justifying the 'dressed' to shoes malarkey ...

www.flylady.net/pages/FLYFaq.asp#whyshoes I actually find it does help me on the days when I'm not working because it stops me from curling up on the sofa with a good book ...!!! But you don't have to follow it - just adapt the Fat Fairy system to suit yourself - most people are more disciplined than me!!

G'night all ...

optimisticmumma · 13/01/2010 19:06

PA - hope your DH gets back OK and isn't too grumpy!
LOL at folding the fitted cot sheet - I suppose that's a babystep before attempting a kin size one! I would have to be seriously bored to do the fitted sheet origami method.
SC - sounds like the WL step is getting a bit complicated. I think a straightforward/simple to follow babystep per week would be fine for those that want it. Otherwise this thread is in danger of becoming hijacked!!What do you think??

Someone tell me to get on the wii fit!

StillCounting · 13/01/2010 19:12

Body clutter weight-loss tips so far (in no particular order)

  1. drink 1 to 2 litres of water a day (will include sassy water recipe) (Optimistic)
  1. ring fence dvd or Wii time per week (we can refine this to specific times or days) (Pluto)
  1. buy a pedometer and walk 10,000 steps a day (MrsDinky)
  1. Eat fruit mid-morning instead of toast or a biscuit (Mrs Dinky)
  1. no seconds, no snacks, no sugar for x days per week (HelpwithCleaning)
  1. Eat five portions of fruit and veg a day (Optimistic)

7.Make low fat soup and eat it rather than chuck it (Optimistic)

  1. Keep low calorie/low fat snack in your handbag (PositiveAttitude)
  1. No s allowed! (Optimistic)
  1. cut out alcohol completely or restrict to x nights per week (StillCounting)

  2. Add power walking x X to your weekly routine (I am going to try and do 2 a week and then have a family walk at weekends) (StillCounting)

  3. Eat an apple a day (Stillcounting)

Feel free to add to the list!!

See you bright and early tomorrow everyone!

StillCounting · 13/01/2010 19:15

x posts - yes I agree Optimistic - better to stick to Flylady example of simple, small steps ...after all, many of the Flylady baby-steps contribute to weight loss anyway (meal planning, early nights, etc etc)

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 13/01/2010 19:18

OM would it work to have a second thread for the diet side? And run two in parallel? That would stop it getting hijacked or simply using something like a random name generator type thing (i use this to pick kids at random in school to answer questions) to pick a weight loss tip. You type the tips in and then hit f10 to get one at random out. we could then have one each day to try to do.

I agree with HWC that the no-s-diet is easy to follow but that in itself doesnt easily lend itself to simple exercise tips, like take a 15min walk, drink 2 ltrs of water, get an early night, eat five bits of fruit and veg, which can be posted first thing. Will willing send an organiser an excel file name generator type thing if wanted.

IMO making the wl step complicated goes against the fat fairy's small, simple steps rule.

optimisticmumma · 13/01/2010 19:48

WCTR - wow your name generator thingy sounds fab if you could do it and tell us all how to work it. Maybe for now we should go with SCs plan and see how it goes...Apart from anything else if we have one simple thing to do as a group we might actually do it!!
Again - what do you think SC?
[feeling like I've opened up a can of worms emoticon]

MiniMarmite · 13/01/2010 20:41

Evening All

Great dieting tips SC. My top tips are:

  • swap carbs for pulses at the evening meal (and no carb snacks after that).
  • if you want to feel fuller for longer eat equal quantities of protein, carbohydrate and complex carbs (veg) at daytime meals/snacks.

Best go and declutter now!

walkthedinosaur · 13/01/2010 21:07

I'm going to take all your weight loss tips on board (after I've eaten the last tin of Roses). Went on the Wii the other day for the first time in, well a long time! Was really chuffed as I'd only put on a 1lb since my last visit a long time ago, went on the next day and had gained 2lb overnight and had not even looked in the direction of a biscuit the day before.

Haven't even gone near the thing today, but as part of my weight loss programme I finished off the last of the Christmas cake and for exercise I scrubbed the tin vigorously .

Haven't done much in the way of housework today but have made myself some leek and potato soup to take to work tomorrow. There is a sausage casserole sitting in the fridge waiting for me to shove in the slow cooker before I go out and I've even measured out the porridge and milk and that's waiting in the microwave just for me to flick the switch in the morning.

Did lesson planning today, took DC's swimming, cooked dinner, sorted out laundry and tidied kitchen after dinner - that's it basically.

Off to my bed now as early start in the morning - see you all tomorrow. Hope all your snow goes - it was about 8 degrees here today, I even managed to strip of a layer of clothing. Probably going to pour down now for the next six weeks

sep1712 · 13/01/2010 21:12

Hi all,

Another day for us all in the snow!!!Plus other peoples children so not great flying but not a tip either!

Weight loss ideas sound great. I have lots of small changes you can make weekly, just let me know when your running out of ideas.
If only i followed them!

At work tomorrow hopefully so will do my steps and go from there!

Enjoy everyone.

feetheart · 13/01/2010 21:52

Trying for a quick post tonight as still have to do dishes and shine sink before bed by 10.30pm

So today's list:
Morning routine - done
Make spaghetti bolognese for dinner - yes and have enough for two more meals for freezer (for 2 adults and 2 D)
Clean bathroom floor - done
Mission-no vanity so will clean tiles - done half, had forgotten there were so many!
15 mins declutter in DS's room which is my 'other area' for this week - no
Dentist's appointment - cancelled as too snowy for 40 mile round trip
DS's first swimming lesson - went well once he got in water, about 20 mins into lesson

One tip I have for drinking water is to put a couple of cubes of crystalised ginger and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice in a mug and add hot water. Tastes good hot and just as nice cold which is often how I have it as I have forgotten it!

MiniMarmite · 13/01/2010 22:22

Forgot to say earlier, welcome back Ellie, we missed you!

MrsDinky · 13/01/2010 22:42

Have just about recovered from this morning's power cut, it was actually quite nice stirring porridge on the stove by candlelight instead of bunging it in the microwave. But two bored kids with no school and no telly was not so good.

I have just super-shined my sink, using my mums tip of give it a semi-dry with a teatowel then give it a really good polish with a ball of newspaper, don't know how it works but it does.

Possibly we should have a separate thread for the weightloss, it is possible there are people on here who are already super slim and fit and not interested (or having a quiet laugh!). We could call it January Fledgling Dieters - the 15 minute Fat Removal Squad.

I am going to make a list for tomorrow now.

Washing, possibly two lots
Bathroom SandS and wipe down doors etc
Hoover
Go to Focus for more plastic storage boxes
Put toys in said boxes
Remember to get something out of the freezer for dinner, keep forgetting.

Off to bed now, night night
ps, think I managed my 2L of water today, but munched masses of leftover crisps and cakes from DD's party. Probably why I was so thirsty come to think of it.......

AmeliaJaneAgain · 13/01/2010 22:48

Hi All, my tip for the weight-loss list is to eat only at defined meal and snack times and don't pick in between... To quote my mum's old weight class leader 'Kitchen pickers wear bigger knickers', need I say more?

Night, night.

missbennett · 13/01/2010 23:00

Evening all! Just composed message and managed to delete it - pah!

Didn't manage to get sneaky look on here at lunch time as at a conference! I missed you all. But have enjoyed catching up just now! everybody has been very busy - is inspirational!

I have
-sorted the washing - no ironing but good folding and smoothing!
-swept kitchen floor
-mission - cleared out bathroom cabinet
-washed up and left sink shiny
-drank about a litre of water
-15mins WII Fit
-enjoyed DD1's tea! She is stressed with AS exams so good for her to have at least a little while away from revision.
-managed to see friend in spite of snow

So reasonably productive.

Weight loss tip? Write down what you eat. Sounds prissy but does help keep track. I've lost just over 60lbs and if I don't write it down I forget and eat too much, basically!

See you tomorrow!

StillCounting · 14/01/2010 06:32

[StillCounting tiptoes in, turns on the light, smooths down her denim tabard, shakes out her microfibre cloths and puts on the kettle]

Morning all you lovely Fledglings!!

The baby step for today is:

www.flylady.net/pages/bbd14.asp

  • it's a indoctrination reading task so can count as catch-up day if you like

And we are still in this zone:

www.flylady.net/pages/FlightPlan.asp

And today's mission is:

www.flylady.net/pages/FlightPlan_Missions.asp
which is about making a master inventory for all the things you need to buy for your bathroom and doing a holiday room rescue for your porch area

Body-clutter step this week:
drink between 1 to 2 litres of water

Grapefruit, warm rolls, tea and coffee now available ...

Have a productive day everyone!

StillCounting · 14/01/2010 06:36

Back later to discuss body clutter postings but thanks for all your tips

Well done on your weight loss MissBennett and hope you had a very well deserved relaxing evening and good sleep last night MummyD

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/01/2010 06:54

Well, i have been dressed to shoes since 4.30am and not actually been to bed but still looking for that very important piece of paper that i need for today . Hope you all have a good day.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/01/2010 07:38

found it!

will have to wait need to go defrost the car.

Mmmango · 14/01/2010 07:54

Chaos! You poor thing. Glad you've found it now

tibni What's the verdict, are you working? Good luck with the journey if you are.

positive attitude hope your husband is back home safe.

ellie hello! hope internet is sorted soon

MrsB - congratulations on your weight loss, that's great!

About bodyclutter, don't all disappear if you do start another thread, will you? (Although I do like MrsD's suggested title.) I was intending to follow in a kind of half-arsed way, which will be harder if you move. My only tip is for the water - make sure you have a big glass of it everytime you sit down at the computer.

I'm having a much better day today, this is the done list:
morning routine
shine sink
hot spots
15 mins cleaning bathroom
15 mins declutter bedroom
prepare package for posting

I have 40 mins before I need to go and pick up dd1, so will crack on with application form after posting. NOT get sucked in to mumsnet

Don't think I'm going to do the mission, we aren't running out of anything I don't think.

missbennett · 14/01/2010 08:03

Morning! Bit fraught this morning as trying to get in early for meeting. Have managed:
-morning routine
-tea in slow cooker
washing in machine and finished but not sure I'll get it out before I go
-packed lunches made
-breakfast done

Think that will be about it for today - Guides tonight and going to panto (oh yes we are!)but means leaving home around 6 and not getting back til 10

Will call in later.........will be ready for nice glass of wine by then!

optimisticmumma · 14/01/2010 08:23

Morning all!
Thanks SC for the flylady links.
Am glad we are rescuing the porch - boy does mine need a rescue from snowladed boots etc!!
Today it is pouring with rain so our road is a skating rink - I don't know why I paid for tickets to skate at the Nat Hist Museum this year!!
Have been out twice already on station runs and my DC have strict instructions to get to school come what may!!

Today:
Yoga (lovely)
Morning routine
Do proper shop not half hearted one with 2 neighbours gossiping as we go!
Errands for DD (Tech coursework bits and bobs)
IRONING
PAPERWORK (please someone check I have done some - you know I hate it!!)
Drink water

Loved the potential thread title Mrs D but like MMMango I can't be bothered with 2 threads and I'm sure the skinny/fit amongst us will be supportive as everyone's very lovely on this thread. It's part of the membership criteria isn't it??

Have a great day all

optimisticmumma · 14/01/2010 08:27

Forgot to say
Hope your day improves Chaos
Hi to Miss Bennett, have a good day!
If you're reading this DMummy we miss you!!

StillCounting · 14/01/2010 08:45

Oh no, Chaos, hope you find it.

Pray to St Anthony (it always works for my ma anyway!)

I'm just dashing in and out again as busy day today but thought I'd share my incoherent musings thoughts on body clutter.

In two minds about separate thread tbh.

For:

  • wouldn't disturb others who have no interest in weight loss/would not hi-jack thread
  • could be more of a serious "weigh-in each week" sort of a thread

Against:

  • good if body clutter tips incorporated in to existing Fly routine
  • the loss of time associated with keeping track of two threads (lovely though all the chat is - and I know I generate a humunguous amount of it myself - it's quite a challenge keeping up with this thread alone!!

So in order to make decision I reckon we need to know:

-how many of you are NOT interested in weight loss?

  • do you want a more dedicated "weigh in each week" thread where we type in our goals etc etc or would you prefer just one body-clutter step added to the Fly steps like this morning.

I'm not sure tbh - both sound good to me - please post yr thoughts!!

Hope you are having a good day everyone. Back later this evening ...

StillCounting · 14/01/2010 08:46

Sorry Chaos read too fast. See you found it now!! Hope you can catch up on sleep tonight!

swanriver · 14/01/2010 09:22

Still Counting - there's a goodish thread on weight loss where people are not low carbing but just exercising a bit more and snacking less....think it is called Food Log and Support.
I've just posted on it, and used meal planning as part of my weight-loss ammunition

Swipe left for the next trending thread
