Spanking new Flybaby "nursery" thread - learn how to Fly for the month of September only

Countingthegreyhairs · 31/08/2009 13:42

Hello. Does anyone want to join/re-join us for a mutual "kick-up-the-bum" motivational thread starting tomorrow 1st September?

[Then we can join the main Flying threads thereafter if we want to.)

We did the same throughout August

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/799866-starting-tomorrow-accelerated-flying-for-month-of-Augu st-only

and it has really helped but being confirmed slatterns extreme cases we feel the need to repeat the exercise throughout September too. We need to declutter, organise, tidy and clean and generally get our lives under control.

All newcomers welcome!

I decluttered a toy cupboard this morning. Lots to take to the charity shop tomorrow (until kids get home from school & decree they have to keep all of it). Cupboard & rest of house still a tip, except sink which is still moderately shiney.

waitingfornemo · 04/09/2009 13:52

OK, I'm going to try this again, failed dismally last month. I have been unbelievably slack this week - the wooden floor in the sitting room is carpeted with dog hair and the same clothes have been hanging on the line for 3 days!

Bigboots · 04/09/2009 14:17

Thanks Blissa and Deepdarkwood - he works at an Outdoor centre and was training some staff in 'man-over-board'. Guess he forgot the 'don't run over the casualty's head' bit All fine this am tho. Nicely glued up head.

blissa · 04/09/2009 14:49

Glad he's ok Bigboots

Washing is put away (I've given up on ironing, thanks to thread a few weeks ago), bathroom is all sparkly and dd2s bed is nice and fresh.

I've also made some playdough that has kept them amused for a while and remembered to ring ds's pre-school manager to ask her something. Just had a cup of tea and am about to get these 2 into the car (now they are finally dressed) to pick up dd1.

Tea is sorted, chicken from last night and a baked spud, so hopefully have a relaxing evening ahead of me with a glass or 2!

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 04/09/2009 16:23

Can I join a few days late?

I was (sort of) following Flylady a couple of years ago but lapsed - I think where I slip up is not going to bed early as I love the quiet evening and my oldest doesn't go to bed until after 10 - so then I'm shattered in the day.

I seem to need at least an hour and a half to myself.
I'd love to know how others achieve this, and also what constitutes 'early?'

deepdarkwood · 04/09/2009 17:34

Glad he's ok bigboots - I've got surprise guests coming this evening, so lots of clearing & emergency floorcleaning here. Was also inspired to do a hot wash & tumble dry my towels (which usually get washed at 30 & chucked on the line) so should have lovely fluffy towels for tomorrow

optimisticmumma · 04/09/2009 18:49

This is the earliest I have been able to get to laptop today!
I have:

Come downstairs to shiny sinks fully dressed ( apart from wet hair! Really couldn't wait around to use hairdryer!)to the fitflops.Cooked breakfast for my boys
Got 3 DC to train without a row (they are all commuting teenagers!), 2 with packed lunches. Got myself to work with lunch.

Just got back to find sinks still shiny as no-one has been in today!!
I also can't be bothered with post-its.
y DH would think it a bit 'Stepford wife'ish and all 3 DC would have a field day!

Am hoping to do more tomorrow and post my goals in the morning. Is that what we're supposed to do??

Countingthegreyhairs · 05/09/2009 00:13

Hello everyone and welcome newcomers - never too late!!

Oh dear, sorry, I am not posting the steps very efficiently I am afraid

Must go to bed - another very long work day -and very busy weekend ahead so posting briefly now and will catch up with thread properly at first opportunity

Keep going everyone and hope the 'patients' in the Blissa, Team Edward and Bigboot households are all feeling a bit better

step for Saturday 5th September

step for Sunday 6th September - this one is quite important about hot spots

If you don't intend to fly at weekends then feel free to catch up with the baby-steps as and when suits you

G'night all and have a good weekend

Wow! Cant believe how busy this thread is this month! Awesome work

Quick hello to POA and CTGH especially (and tbni who I blaming for my laptop giving up the ghost less than 24 hours after I posted to her about hers, hence me disappearing half way through last month)

Anyway, I made my end of August dealine so thank you all, and I have decided this month will be the one I finally build my control journal, so I am here now

My ex-study is now 100% a bedroom, and DS' room has all its trofast is. I still have soem very major hotspots -back of sofa, dining table, fruit bowl, top of microwave and top of stairs- to deal with and so I am going to keep on with those.

Oooh I had a great idea. I now have two nice boxes called 'up box' and 'down box' at top and bottom of stairs. They are from Wilko and I jsut drop anything into them that is ont he wrong floor of the house, and then take something whenever I am going up or down and remember! So I ahve one of these on top step and one on bottom boxes
They have been brill at getting things like little toy cars etc back where they should be

Anyway, catch up soon

Morning and hello all. Fell of the flying wagon yesterday due to v busy day at work, ill childminder and meal out in the evening with a friend. Although my sink is still shiny because MIL came to take DS to school and while she was waiting to take him....cleaned my kitchen. Result! Have a stinking hangover from only half a bottle of wine which seems very unfair and am sat here drinking copious amounts of coffee and definitely not dressed to lace-up shoes

However, am going to make a list on here of jobs to do today and then come back later on in the vain hope that writing them on here will mean that when i come back will have to list what I have done. So here goes:-

Today I must
Get dressed (challenging given aforementioned hangover)
Get DC's dressed (even more challenging given aforementioned hangover)
Do and dry and put away several loads of washing
Go to Tesco
Mop living room floor/polish living room
CLean dining room
CLean bathroom
Buy dress for DD for party on Tuesday
Encourage/force DS to tidy his bedroom
Change beds
Shine my sink

Think that will do, just looking at it makes me tired

WIsh me luck. AM going now to take some good drugs to alleviate aforementioned hangover. Have a good day everyone.

earlyonemorning, am so glad it's not just me with the bedroom thing. Even when I make the effort and the rest of the house is vaguely (and I do stress the word vaguely) presentable our bedroom isn't because no-one ever goes in there apart from us so all the crap gets dumped in there 'to sort out' which also means 'hide it there because no-one will see it' WHen I watch these crappy home shows and see these lovely relaxing bedrooms with ironed sheets and clothes in wardrobes not on the floor, I wonder whether these people actually have a life or whether I am just particularly shit at managing mine.

So midday check in...from my list I have managed to:-

CLothe myself and DC's
Do and hang out 2 loads of washing
Been to Tesco
Acquired new dress for DD
Shined my sink (though have left pots to dry)
Stripped beds
Cleaned living room

Not bad with a hangover (although in my case the drugs definitely do work and am starting to come round a bit)

DD is now having a nap and DS watching Ben 10 so I am going to have a well deserved lounge on the sofa.

elliepac · 05/09/2009 12:52

Oh and what do you do if your whole house is one huge fecking hotspot?

hello dreamteamgirl - I did notice that you hadn't posted but I promise you that I didn't send ds over to drop your laptop so not my fault .

Hi all, managed to sort out all the make up, soaps and general rubbish in the en suite and family bathroom - threw away a whole bag of empty, dried out stuff .

Have 40 jacket spuds in my range for my friends 40th party tonight and hoping they cook in time!

nannynick · 05/09/2009 16:21

I have a question... given that I got a step behind during the week.

If you are not at home say 7.30am-11.30pm (as was the case for me on Thursday), how do you keep up with the daily fly?
Luckily as it is week 1, the tasks are not too tricky yet... so I'm back on track now... but what happens next week, or the week after if/when the same thing occurs and that day's task is harder?
Is it ok to skip a day?

blissa · 05/09/2009 17:37

Haven't really managed much today except some loads of washing, but it's the weekend and I tend to relax about the housework!

My major hotspot is most definately my bedroom. Since we put ds into the spare bedroom all the stuff from in there and stuff that would have got shoved in there now gets shoved into our room. 2 minutes is not going to touch it!

A smaller hotspot is on top of the toybox in the living room or the shelves out in the hall, I'll give those a go.

Hope your hangover is easing elliepac.

KembleTwins · 05/09/2009 17:40

I've had a look at tomorrow's thing about hot spots, and I'm a bit confused. OK, so I know where my hotspots are, but I don't get what "putting up" my hotspot for 2 minutes is, espcially as it says I shouldn't do any work until after the timer goes off. Do I spend 2 minutes sorting out (ie tidying) a hotspot, or 2 minutes putting stuff from the hotspot into piles, and then another 6 hours actually doing the tidying?

Help!

tibni · 05/09/2009 17:51

I could be wrong but I look at putting out hotspots like putting out a fire. The idea being that you don't try and take on a huge area - just what you can do in the set time. It might mean that you don't get the whole job done in one go but thats ok.

That is the principal I believe - I tend to be a bit "all or nothing" - and work until the whole job is done.

Nick - I'm never going to be able to do every step every single day on the correct day. I just have to accept this and try and "catch up" when I can. I see the initial stage about trying to establish good habits and get a little more organised. When i'm a bit further along I try and take notice of the Zone we are working in and the mission.

KembleTwins · 05/09/2009 18:00

Ah, OK, I get it now! Thanks tibni

snorkie · 05/09/2009 18:11

I think you are supposed to spend 2 min max blitzing the hotspot Kemble. I have major hotspots everywhere (but my bedroom is also especially bad) & 2 mins won't touch them, but the idea is to make a start & do something. Today, I sorted some of the shoes under the stairs - it took longer than 2 mins and the understair cupboard is still fairly inpenetrable, but I've got the ones we use into pairs & found a home for them and thrown out/charity shopped some outgrown ones, so it's a small step in the right direction.

elliepac · 05/09/2009 19:26

Nick, I too work full time (though not as long as you) and am concerned that I won't have the time to do stuff when this flying things gets a little more complicated. Am hoping that will manage to do a little every night and keep my sink shiny so won't have loads to do at the weekend. AT the moment, all I do at the weekend is clean up the week's mess and never achieve anything constructive.

at early one morning, our bedroom is exactly like yours.

Thank you for your kind words on my hangover although it is entirely self-inflicted as DH keeps kindly pointed out. AFter taking some very good drugs it has now eased though I have a severe case of cba where the house is concerned. Have managed to do most things on my earlier list though have not put the washing away so it will join the pile in the cupboard . Mind you if I actually put the stuff in the wardrobes, no-one would know where the clothes were, at least at the moment they know to go to 'the pile in the cupboard'

I would still like to think I have done quite well today though have still got to cook tea for me and DH and shine sink...(ellie wonders how likely it is she will shine sink tonight?)

And on a completely random note, I have just had to put my heating on for an hour, it is bloody freezing here. It's SEPTEMBER FFS.

positiveattitudeonly · 05/09/2009 20:36

Hi all, Can I just say that I did the fly thingy last month for the first time and worried about how much I would be having to do by the end of the month, but I have to say that it does not increase hugely. You are not locked into a room on day 28 until it is spotless! This really is just little steps to encourage good habits. Some days are absolutely twee twoddle! and can easily be ignored.
