Spanking new Flybaby "nursery" thread - learn how to Fly for the month of September only

Countingthegreyhairs · 31/08/2009 13:42

Hello. Does anyone want to join/re-join us for a mutual "kick-up-the-bum" motivational thread starting tomorrow 1st September?

[Then we can join the main Flying threads thereafter if we want to.)

We did the same throughout August

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/799866-starting-tomorrow-accelerated-flying-for-month-of-Augu st-only

and it has really helped but being confirmed slatterns extreme cases we feel the need to repeat the exercise throughout September too. We need to declutter, organise, tidy and clean and generally get our lives under control.

All newcomers welcome!

Got loads to do today as we've got visitors this afternoon.

House is looking generally cleaner already though.

fruitstick · 11/09/2009 09:32

Last night I forgot to choose my clothes and this morning I didn't manage to get dressed before breakfast (both DCs woke 20mins earlier than usual).

I'm all over the place. We are going to a wedding tomorrow and my brother is moving in to look after DCs. I have to make sure there are clean towels and sheets, food etc. Help.

Sorry, but can someone remind me what I'm supposed to be doing today.

I'm dressed
washing is on
sink is shiny

is it 2 mins hotpsots and 15 mins declutter?

I can see myself still surrounded by chaos in a month's time but with shoes on and a very shiny sink!

Early - hope everything is OK with your DH.

havingagiraffe · 11/09/2009 09:56

Fruitbat - was just about to post how impressed I am with your breakfast prep so don't despair. Some of us are looking up to you! Might try it myself. Know what you mean about chaos continuing - I worry I may learn to hate my lovely shiny sink.

Not much sleep for alot of last night as DS decided to be awake for alot of it! So don't feel much like doing anything, although it was lovely to come down to a clean and tidy kitchen so it must be working even with the small amount I've been doing.

Done today

Got dressed to shoes (only 'cos I'm off out)
Made bed
Expressed milk
Nappies on to wash
Chilli baggeed up and put in freezer
Sink shined
Spag Bol out of freezer for tonight so dinner done!
DW loaded and on

To do

15 mins sorting dressing room
Washing out
DW empty

My ironing is really piling up too but probably a w/end task (Boo Hoo)

Have a good day everyone - am off to indulge in stationary all in the name of flying

positiveattitudeonly · 11/09/2009 10:22

Hi all, Hope all the poorlies are feeling better.

Fruit - Don't panic. Today's step is to write something inspirational in your journal. CTGH has said she ignores this one and I would say that the inspirational thought for me today is "Don't get obsessed with shiny sink - get a life!!!!!!" - me I mean. I am not being horrible to anyone, honest

Last Christmas my DD2 bought me a plaque that is the first thing any visitor sees when entering my house. It says "Last week my house was tidy - sorry you missed it!"

Sink was decidedly very unshiny and could not even be found under the pile of washing up this morning after I dashed out last night, got in late and had my blinkers on as I walked through the kitchen. So set to work this morning before I left home and kitchen was sparkling again as I left - ok late for work, but I cannot do everything right!

Not really getting anywhere with my hotspots. They seem to move! As I clear one, all that stuff needs to go somewhere and so another is created!

Hoover definitely needs some exercise today, so that is top of the to-do list after work, but then I am also taking DD2 and DS straight out for a camp for the weekend, so maybe the hoovering will have to wait til tomorrow.
The best word in the English language, where housework is concerned - tomorrow.

Anyway, have fun everyone and don't panic if the wagon seems to be running away from you, wait for the next one and hop back on!!

Sorry for all my ramblings, slow day at work, so here I am talking to myself!

mygoodmorning · 11/09/2009 11:54

Morning all,

Not feeling too good today so am having a day off work. So went to do some retail therapy lol.

Need to get get moving for today although dressed nothing else has been done apart from emptying the dishwasher. Hubby has noticed the shiny sink or lack of pots in the sink so that is good.

Inspiration thought for today. Hubby said I should think of really really far out ones and then settle for a more useful one. I have come up with ...

...

...

...

Put things straight away after I have finished with them .

after all that excitement, how boring is mine. BUT if I keep to that one thought my house with be a whole lot tidier.

flying thoughts to everyone.

blissa · 11/09/2009 12:33

Hi everyone

I'm glad most of you are ignoring todays step as I have fallen off the wagon and need to catch up.

My sink is not shiny, my bedroom is practically on fire and I keep forgetting to put my clothes out.

In my defence, I have washed the covers on the sofa, hoovered and finally mopped the floor and been to tesco this morning. I will shine my sink tonight as dcs are having a very quick and crappy tea.

Hope you start to feel better soon TeamEdward.

I'm sorry to hear about your dh early. I've been through similar in the past few months, I had clots on my lungs and finished my warfarin treatment 2 months ago. No smoking, flights, etc here either. It is very scarey, I hope you are both ok.

Hi to everyone else xx

havingagiraffe · 11/09/2009 12:52

Fridays were made for crappy teas.

My inspirational phrase came to me at 4:30am while trying to get a monkeyish son to sleep.

Keep calm and carry on.

optimisticmumma · 11/09/2009 12:56

Good grief, Blissa. Sounds like you've done loads.!

Does anyone else's mind go completely blank when asked to come up with some inspirational??

My v. boring one is...
Touch a piece of paper once! (If only I could stick to it)

Agree with you, POA. Mine fires keeping moving round the room!!

Have to say that life is easier when you do get clothes out etc. Think I may rebel over the weekend though....

Retail therapy: done (new boots )
Supper prepped: done
Decluttering: done

Better go and do the ironing then.........

optimisticmumma · 11/09/2009 12:57

Excuse typos!

HelenHighwater · 11/09/2009 13:08

POA I have a fridge magnet that says the same thing.

My bed is made
Washing on
Quick vac floors
Am going to sort of airing cupboard and odd sock bag today.

Still can't get the hang of putting my clothes out at night and didn't get up early today as it was my only day for a lie-in. Bliss.

V impressed with your laying out of breakfast stuff at night fruitstick.

Will have to ponder on something inspirational.

Hello all

Hope all who are poorly are feeling better

Can't beat the Quentin Crisp inspirational quote!

For Sunday 13th - start of missions

BTW I can't really answer the question properly about Flying and working full time - I only work school hours three days a week - but there are loads of testimonials on the Flylady site insisting that it can be done (look at site map and anything about Payroll Shes - yes that's what they call full-grown working women) But they would say that wouldn't they!!

  • I'm sorry I know that is a pretty weak answer!!

I guess the main thrust of the Flylady argument (to summarise) is that as a working mother's life is full of to-do lists and getting through the next piles of tasks, then the Flylady system is meant to structure and refine those tasks so that you are doing the least number of jobs but in the most effective way.

Looking at some lists posted here - you are all doing brilliantly - but if anything you are doing too much rather than too little. The idea is to keep going, doing a little bit, EVERY single day, without crashing and burning. This is a system for the long term.

Have a look at this and scroll down to What is a Basic Weekly Plan?

If you are not convinced by the above (don't blame you - having fallen off the wagon often myself - I'm not entirely sure I am either ) then we could always ask someone on the professional flyers thread how they combine Flying and a full-time job??

One other thing: I think we all have a tendency to assume that we have to do things perfectly and take ages over each thing - so much so that we never want to do it again. If you read bits on the Flylady website you will see that she only recommends spending 10 mins here on this or 15 mins here on that. The missions (being introduced on Sunday) are only meant to take 10 mins each for example.

Hope everyone has a good w/e!! Must Fly!!

Want to clean my microwave but with a few chemicals as possible while I'm pregnant.

So far I have found microwaving a bowl with water and lemon, water and baking soda or water and vinegar!

Anyone have any idea which might be best?

optimisticmumma · 11/09/2009 19:16

CTGH - thanks for clearing up the work/flylady debate. I think you're right in that we all are 'going for it' rather than doing just the babysteps. Tempting though isn't it?

Have a nice weekend everyone!

elliepac · 11/09/2009 19:21

Evening all and thank the lord it's friday! Glad to hear you are feeling a little more positive early, I hope after the shock has worn off things will calm down.

Today I have managed to shine sink and do a hotspot and that's about it. We shall see what the w'end brings. Hopefully lots of flying.

Have just spent a lovely evening in the garden with the DC's enjoying the last drops of summer and am now not feeling very motivated to fly but i suppose it will wait tomorrow.

Have a great weekend.

tibni · 11/09/2009 19:43

Evening all.

Things are going ok here.

Discovered Bar Keepers Friend which is brill for my granite sink and surfaces.

Time for general housework has been a bit limited (patio building and loftclearing) but house isn't too bad.

Have a good weekend all

snorkie · 11/09/2009 21:50

baby steps here. sink is shiny & the latest hotspot reducing. I don't have a timer, so have been guessing the timings, but realised that I set the microwave for 2 mins when I make myself a coffee (long story, kettle broke 6 months ago & haven't replaced it), so now I'm doing my 2 min hotspot clear just before my morning coffee - seems to work well.

deepdarkwood · 11/09/2009 22:24

GoldenSnitch - I've heard water and lemon, but I have never tried it...

Happy weekends everyone (& thanks again for all the links Counting - makes my life so much easier )

blissa · 12/09/2009 10:59

Morning all

Sink is shiney!! Have cleaned round the kitchen this morning and 2 loads of washing are out on the line. Have also spent 10 minutes clearing and sweeping the patio- even the garden is cluttered! The sun is shining here, always makes me feel more motivated.

Have got both dds 'putting out' their hotspot- bedroom!

Today I will spend 10 minutes in my room and I have more washing to do- I like to get it all done on a saturday so I can have sunday off.

Glad you and your dh are feeling more positive about things early. All the info on anticoags, INRs and diet is very over whelming at first, but it does get easier.

I missed your post about your dh Bigboots, sorry. I hope you are both ok.

GoldenSnitch- I have tried water and vinegar in the microwave, and it pongs a bit! Water and lemon will probably be nicer. I have just done plain water before and it's worked just as well.

Hi to everyone else

positiveattitudeonly · 12/09/2009 12:51

Oh Flippin heck!!! Not just fallen off the wagon, but the wagon has gone way into the distance. Kitchen is a mess, washbins are overflowing, hotspots are making infernos and everywhere needs hoovering.

Sat on here contemplating where to start!

optimisticmumma · 12/09/2009 14:55

Shine your sink, "POA", shine your sink!

tibni · 12/09/2009 15:08

PAO it happens - have a coffee and then make a start . I feel I have fallen behind this week, as I am sorting the loft other stuff isn't being done and some stuff from the loft can't be thrown away so i'm having to find places for them.

I have friends with immaculate houses all the time - that will never be me and to be honest I wouldn't want to be a mum that puts a clean house before my family and also having time for me. We are all here because we don't find it easy and we will all slip at times.

I'm sitting looking at the fab sun (and facing the dreaded visit to MiL - she doesn't get ASD and has no tollerance for my ds) and thinking I really should remove the finger and mouth marks from my windows! But i'm having 5(ish )mins on MN.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend

positiveattitudeonly · 12/09/2009 16:13

Thanks for the encouragement. I would love to say it has worked, but instead I have just spent a couple of hours out with the kids and we are now enjoying a dvd together. Time with them is too important. I will shine my sink later and try again tomorrow!!!

tibni · 12/09/2009 16:22

Enjoy your time with the kids - it's more important {smile}

Can I pick your brains anyone. It's my birthday at the end of the month and my best mate wants ideas for a gift. I was thinking of organised mum diary but do I do life book or family? Anyone know what the real difference is?
