So you haven't had it on yet? You must be desperate to get it fired up.

My kitchen/dining room is going to be similar colour to yours by the sound of it. The Rayburn is in the middle and choclate brown.

The food is really lovely as it's moist and flavoursome. My old electric oven used to dry stuff out.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/06/2009 21:50

Spidermama i actually considered brown aga...actually i want everything to be a bit of a 'non event' iykwim and the kitchen to be more than the sum of its parts...

Hellymelly - its quite draining starting from scratch for an anal retentive control freak perfectionist like me!

I am MOST pleased with my tiles - cheap bought in a fired earth sale months ago and grey grout - dreamy!

hellymelly · 10/06/2009 21:55

I can't even work out what I really want.I have lived on a boat for so long I am finding a house hard to fathom.I don't think I have ever seen a kitchen I fell in love with, although a few friends have ones I like.I have never had to work out a kitchen before,I don't know where to start!

ingles2 · 10/06/2009 22:02

Evening... roll on Friday then PYBF, that's when you'll seriously fall in love with it, when it's lovely and warm and baking your bread
(btw dh makes fantastic sourdough in the aga, & you don't need tins or anything)
don't stress about lumps and bumps, they all have them.
Think of it as... character, part of it's personality

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/06/2009 22:06

thanks Ingles!

one query is the badge - i thought it would be the flat ended oval with AGA but instead it is very curly?

ingles2 · 11/06/2009 14:15

what do you mean by curly PYBF? not lying flat against the cooker?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/06/2009 14:39

no the writing is frilly - not the normal badge - new 'classic' one i am told...

it is about to be lit!!!!!! (yikes)

ChocolateRabbit · 11/06/2009 14:45

Have been reading the thread and feeling all inspired. DH and I have just moved in with my parents who have a pre-war cream Aga (solid fuel). It doesn't work but we think that is because of the flue rather than because of the Aga itself. DH is very keen to renovate the Aga and start using it again but the coal is horrible.

Does anyone have any experience of reconditioning on an old Aga? Any tips generally?

Many thanks

ingles2 · 11/06/2009 18:51

Hooray!!!!!!!!
dinner is on PYBF!
(new logo is slightly...twee?! )

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/06/2009 22:03

grrr my connection playing up so one pic on now i hope!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/06/2009 23:20

two quite rubbish pics now

ingles2 · 12/06/2009 17:35

ooo it's gorgeous PYBF!!!!!
The whole kitchen is gorgeous

So have you cooked anything on it yet????

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/06/2009 21:33

thankyou ingles

kitchen maker driving me nutty so kitchen not actually in yet!!

Managed to burn three sweet potatoes this morning

have baked two vegetarian shepherds pies and a bolognaise sauce
two apple crumbles and some crispy potato skins!!

so far 30 hours on it has still not reached temperature so not sure whether to turn it up

it is a very STEEP learning curve!

ingles2 · 12/06/2009 21:45

well if you've cooked that lot during the day it probably won't be up to temp. Have a look at the gauge first thing and if it's still below the line turn it up....
Now pass that crumble over here...

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/06/2009 21:48

i spent half the day polishing it!!

one sweet potato and one jacket exploded

the stewed apple boiled over in the baking oven!

swanriver · 13/06/2009 14:42

The aga is like a volvo, PY, it needs dog hair and a bit of encrustation. It is not a shiny sportscar. Don't worry if it looks used, it can take it! It will never look scuzzy, just venerable.
Good luck, it does take a bit of getting used to.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/06/2009 21:55

am loving it so far

thanks swanriver

Owls · 13/06/2009 22:03

Choc Rabbit, sounds like you need to get the Aga serviced before you do anything. Unfortunately, they do need servicing every 6/12 months. They are a bit of a love affair.

PYBG, love the Aga but the kitchen looks a bit empty minimalist?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/06/2009 22:08

owls!

I agree - i am getting strangely used to the void kitchen as it is

units are due to arrive probably never as the cabinet maker seems intent on doing anything else but our kitchen now he has our cash

next week

Owls · 13/06/2009 22:28

Ahh right now I understand. Bespoke Hand-made kitchen will be lovely when it arrives. Eventually. Gritted teeth from bitter experience.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/06/2009 22:33

thanks for empathy

i am fast losig the will to live patience with him tbh
