i have added a coving photo. sorry it takes ages as i have to email it to myself to reduce the size. must be an easier way...sigh

katch · 11/01/2009 23:37

Butting in with a word of warning: don't do what I did and cook loads of pies and cakes, to make the most of the Aga's constant power.

I put on nearly 2 stone and still have a stone left to lose 2 years later.

I think it was also the stress of the.building work, and the fact that, having minimal facilities, I cooked mainly ready meals for a few weeks.

RiaParkinson · 11/01/2009 23:40

kristina oooh lovely

we are losing coving in one room to lower ceing slightl as two covings do not match but one is very prety

how many downlighters i each side?

( you will wish you had never started!!!)

KristinaM · 11/01/2009 23:51

three and six. rooms are different sizes and main work area is in the bigger room with more lighting IYSWIM. they are energy saving and dimmable

we have LED strip s under units and and on top and lighting inside larder cupboard and above aga of course. we ran it all into a new consumer unit hidden in one of the cupboards

i was sad to lose the original coving but we had no choice. of course it was destroyed along the wall that came down so was only left on one wall of new room and we coulnd't match it exactly. we had to plate ceiling to provide cavity for pipes that used to run down the wall we knocked a hole in!

replacement cornice is virtually identical. it was expensive but def a good move

KristinaM · 11/01/2009 23:52

I'm impressed by your baking skills katch. what kind of pies do you make? LOL if i had posted a photo of me you would see that the last thing i need is more pies

RiaParkinson · 11/01/2009 23:53

KristinaM · 11/01/2009 23:55

We're replacing our reconditioned two oven gas for a new four oven 13 amp electric.
The reconditioned was only bought two and a half years ago (by previous house owners)but has been a nightmare! The running costs have been astronomical, even for an aga(!) and it has just been a constant burden - although I still loved it. Why do agas do that - make you love them even when they do nothing but play you up.
The many engineers who have been out to see it have all pointed out that its parts come from so many different 'eras' and that the 70's parts we have are notorious for going wrong.
Maybe we have just been unlucky, but...
Yay! A new sparkly one 4 oven will be arriving in a couple of weeks. DH insisted on the electric with AIMS due to electricity being the only renewable energy resource and feels that long term it's got to be the way to go. I'd like to think that he is thinking of the environment but it is just the running costs he's considering really! (rightly or wrongly - please lets not go into that now. It's been our main topic of conversation for tooo long )

jasper · 12/01/2009 12:01

YouLuka did you see my question to Ingles above? Aslo her early posts on this thread?

RiaParkinson · 12/01/2009 14:49

youluka oh no... where did you buy it?

Krstina we have a worse bathroom!!

I like the radiator

got to dash i do NOT mn in daytime!

YouLukaBeautiful · 12/01/2009 17:59

Jasper - yes sorry, I did see your question. Funnily I have spoken to two people today who have sung their praises of the electric so I'm not too worried really. A kitchen installer who doesn't work for aga but installs lots of kitchens with them in also told me the other day that he has never heard anyone regret buying one the 13 amp.
I hope Ingles can let us know more...before it's too late!!
RiaParkinson - It came with the house we bought but had only just been installed. I did find out where it came from and contacted them. Their website details say that all agas come with 2 year guarantee, but they wouldn't honour it!
Where was the place you went to visit? I don't want to bad mouth any company but could let you know if the place you went to was in a similar area to where ours came from

RiaParkinson · 12/01/2009 18:03

ours is North yorkshire - ( I think it is North yorkshire!) Catterick Luka

YouLukaBeautiful · 12/01/2009 18:45

You're ok Ria. Ours wasn't from there
Sorry to have added to your worries. Our experience has just completely put us off the idea of renovated. Our aga was put together with components of so many different agas of differing ages and design that, bless it, it looks beautiful, bakes wonderfully but costs a small fortune to run and needs constant servicing. The mad thing is that someone is buying it from us in order to renovate and sell on again. I'm sure that he must be rubbing his hands in glee. It looks lovely and works...sometimes. I wonder who'll own ours next. I hope the renovation is a good one!
BUT...there must be many more people who have good experiences of them.

RiaParkinson · 12/01/2009 20:29

how much were the running costs Luka ( was it 4 oven)

jasper · 12/01/2009 23:01

thanks Luka.
Whan do you get your new one and have you worked out running costs?

I am looking to get a 2 oven 13 amp electric one.

A friend has the 4 oven model you are buying and loves it.

SniffyHock · 12/01/2009 23:08

I bought a reconditioned electric Aga 2 years ago and I love it. It is night storage, costs a fortune to run but it has never given us any bother. It was immaculate when we got it. I think it was £4500 as opposed to 9k.

swanriver · 13/01/2009 14:56

I think some aga owners do conveniently forget the servicing element. My mother's is from 50's and she will swear it hasn't given her a moment's trouble, but actually it is a frankenstein's monster of different parts, valves. But she still loves it...

SwedesInACape · 13/01/2009 15:07

If you can afford it I would buy a new one. I bought a new one three and a half years ago..... cream 4 oven gas with a power flue. Aga customer service is second to none and I reasoned that it adds more than the cost of itself to the value of your house.

I used to live in North Yorkshire and at my old house i inherited an Aga that was on its last legs so I swapped it for a reconditioned 4 oven version from a chap based near Catterick - John something. By the time the Aga got installed I might just as well have bought a new one as there wasn't that much difference in the price once they had added all the extras which they failed to be upfront about in the beginning. But the Aga itself was great and looked as good as new.

SwedesInACape · 13/01/2009 15:10

John whathisface is based on a farm just outside Catterick... drives a big Merc.

bluesky · 13/01/2009 17:09

running costs can be found on the aga website, for different sized oven agas, and whether you are elec, gas or oil.

RiaParkinson · 13/01/2009 17:51

Swedes! I went there on saturday

ODDLY he was driving an old green punto with a personalised plate

he works hard - was muck spreading on a sturday afternoon but had paid 5 kids through private school

he quotes us £6.5k all in and aga £10k almost to the penny......

i still am no nearer

BUT Swedes did you like John Wrays aga?

RiaParkinson · 13/01/2009 17:51

small world eh Swedes
