if you donrt have your aga serviced properly and it goes on fire your insurance might refuse to pay up in part or full. its contributory negligence

SwedesInACape · 13/01/2009 21:17

Yes the Aga itself was not a problem but I didn't much care for JW.

To be honest the reconditioned price sounds a bit steep.

I bought a brand new one (4 oven cream, gas, power flue) from an Aga dealer in Surrey. It was a cancelled order and I paid £5,999.00 installed.

I will email you the details of the company as it's worth asking them if they have any cancelled orders.

RiaParkinson · 13/01/2009 21:19

that would be great Swedes

interestingly as we left I said to R 'did you like JW' and he said 'yes but aren't they all nice when trying to sell you something!'

Please do email me...

Sorry, this dropped of my convos and only just looked for it again.
Re: my electric AGA. Firstly the running costs are astronomical. My elec bill is enormous, a lot more than AGA suggested. Also I bought it about 6 years ago and it's had 2 electric boards and new rods which when you add on to the fact that I paid near on £15K for it, it's cost me an awful lot of money. Still love it though
Still umming and aahing Ria?

RiaParkinson · 14/01/2009 21:04

Oh Ingles YES i am

went round to a friends today and cood over hers and stroked it and mauled in and lay on it and quizzed her

she inherited one and then moved house and bought a 4 oven NEW

she says get re conditioned

she says its only a bunsen burner

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ingles2 · 14/01/2009 21:08

well she's right!
Swedes sounds like she did amazingly well
Have you tried that?
Are you oil btw?

RiaParkinson · 14/01/2009 21:31

no we are gas Ingles...

I am supposed to be planning said kitchen çe soir

instead i have a huge pile of Living etc at the bottom of the bed and am mumsnetting and watching sleb BB

it's too hard

dp thinks its fun for me , it's not ..it's hard work

Ingles2 · 14/01/2009 21:38

Right...As for the aga.. get the company name from Swedes try for a cancellation otherwise buy recond. There is practically nothing that can go wrong with one, and engineers for gas are easy to come by. Also many are subsidized by Aga to keep the costs down. I think you would have to be v.v.v. unlucky to get one that didn't look brand spanking new.
What's next?

Millarkie · 14/01/2009 21:39

Ingles- you have jinxed my electric Aga! It's stopped working..all new rods last year so I assume it's the circuitboard thing but can't get the aga-man to commit to coming round at a particular time (he said he would 'pop in' some time this week but I'm at work most of the time and dh is abroad)...now have LPG hob/electric oven combo and a calor gas heater in the kitchen

RiaParkinson · 14/01/2009 21:42

oh no millarke

Ingles2 · 14/01/2009 21:43

OH SHIT Millarkie! it's not even that easy to find an engineer who does electric.
Is the red light flashing but it's just not heating up overnight?
Is the fan working?

KristinaM · 15/01/2009 09:57

oh dear! the electric ones sounds really complicated there isn't much to go wrong on the oil ones, hope gas are the same

all that ever goes wrong with ours is that the burners get clogged up a bit and the temp drops, which is probably due to residue in the kero

i would respectfully suggest that those of you who never have yours serviced seriously consider having this done, for safety & insurance reasons.FWIW i have no financial connection with aga or with aga engineers

Millarkie · 15/01/2009 15:23

There really isn't much to go wrong with the electric ones - just the heating rods and the circuit board I think... Just went to test the fan and found the Aga is switched off at the main switch - have texted dh to find out if he switched it off..or if I've found the reason it's not working [blush}

Ingles2 · 15/01/2009 16:25

LOL, that'll be it then M.

Millarkie · 15/01/2009 18:11

False alarm Dh has texted back to say that he turned it off after it broke because he was going to take the front off and check the ends of the rods looked ok..but didn't have time before he had to leave for his flight.
Oh well, back to hoping Mr Electric Aga-man will drop by sooner rather than later.

Ingles2 · 15/01/2009 19:09

and [gulp]
I pretty sure my last circuit board cost £1000 Millarkie. sorry

Millarkie · 15/01/2009 19:18

Oh well... Maybe I should re-train as an electric Aga repairperson?

Ingles2 · 15/01/2009 19:19

it's crossed my mind as well Millarkie

RiaParkinson · 15/01/2009 21:15

been to another aga shop

life is too short and way too meaningful for me to fill my head with this trivia day day out...

feel like just buyig new with a power flue and a nice aga guarantee and jobs a good un....

votes for???

and those against???

jasper · 16/01/2009 21:49

get it!

swanriver · 17/01/2009 21:04

It is only guaranteed for a year anyway when new. Buy reconditioned, and then any probs is money for jam. It really is like cars, except better because don't have seven year self-destruct.

Millarkie · 18/01/2009 21:56

Get a reconditioned one - go on

And a big cheer here because dh has fixed our Aga. He bravely went forth with his multimeter and found a broken rod..luckily we had some spare from last year (we had the whole lot replaced last year but kept all the old intact ones)...will be so nice to have a cosy kitchen in the morning

RiaParkinson · 24/01/2009 21:08

i am so pleased Millarkie - big votes for multi metres here dp loves his!

Have been refused re mortgage well not exactly refused but any sane person would not acceopt the deal rbs are offering us

however am now pretty sold on a .......delete as applicable... new/used?

SalVolatile · 25/01/2009 20:48

Well if it helps I have a 40 year old white AGA that came with the house, it has bumps, scratches and honourable scars, gets serviced twice a year and runs like a dream. I don't even have an alternative cooker. When we manage to fit a new kitchen (credit crunch permitting) this AGA is going nowhere - I wouldn't swop it for anything. So my advice would be to find a secondhand dealer you trust and buy from him.

RiaParkinson · 12/02/2009 21:50

Salvolatile thanks for that

my debate rages on

now i am wondering whether the 3 oven would suffice or will i regret it?
