How many times do your los wear their pjs?

Having just read the pending pile thread, I wondered how many times your LOs wear their pjs before they are "dirty"?

DTs are grubby little mites and crawl around so their sleepsuits/pjs get worn just once, but dd who is 4 is much cleaner and less of a floor-roller so she wears her 2, sometimes 3 nights before they are dirty/a bit stinky.

Is this a slatternly way to live? Should they have clean pjs every night? Surely not...

It wouldn't have been possible for a woman forty or so years ago to have done this much washing. Unless you think people back then were just dirty, there's a message--we wash more than need to.

Nobody needs a clean towel every day unless they've had some kind of dreadful calamity on it. Nobody needs a clean shirt if the old one still smells OK and is unmarked. Why do the work? Why use the water? Lots of fields round us are earmarked for digging up and turning into a reservoir for the use of a big city. And yes, this narks me. Why should we lose our countryside so you (not you personally, I should add) can wash your clothes every day?

JoDeeMagi · 11/12/2008 17:17

DS has been off school poorly ill so has been wearing the same PJs day and night since Tuesday evening - he'll change them tonight after a bath. Generally 2/3 days depending on stink factor.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 17:23

abraid - you come and stop my DS1 wetting the bed everynight, or stop my two older DS's geting their school uniforms dirty everyday (visibily dirty), or my toddlers making a mess of himself on a daily basis........

and I'll stop doing at least one wash a day....

Horton · 11/12/2008 17:25

I'm genuinely surprised that anyone would think clean PJs every day was a necessity, Fred! I feel like we do more than enough washing without adding another six pairs of pyjamas to the mix. And clean towels every day just seems crazy to me too.

abraid, I think we are cleaner than we were forty years ago when people often had a weekly or twice-weekly bath even as adults. And I am quite pleased that I have the option of a shower or bath every day and think I would be smellier without it. But yes, there's loads of stuff that doesn't need washing every time you wear it. With things that aren't next to and touching the armpits - jeans, jumpers (which you'd be wearing something underneath) etc - I don't think anyone could possibly tell whether you'd worn them before unless they came up close and sniffed a bit more deeply than you'd like them to!

Horton · 11/12/2008 17:27

Obviously wee-soaked PJs are another matter from ones that have just been slept in.

basementbear · 11/12/2008 17:49

I would love to know how often the PJs etc get changed in the homes of SAHDs ... only cos I went out early for the day on Sunday leaving DH in charge and when I came home at teatime the DCs were still in their PJs!!

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 17:50

Horton I agree - I wouldn't normally wash PJ's (or uniforms for that matter) daily unless necessary. Unfortunately I have 3 boys so I can't really see my washing load decreasing

rebelmulledwine72 · 11/12/2008 19:43

OMG, am totally

Changing pjs every single day??? That would not ever occur to me to do, not from "normal wear" (obviously if there is sick or similar on there, they get changed).

Apart from the effect on the enviroment and the cost, do none of the frequent washers worry about the over-exposure to chemicals (I mean detergent and conditioner) ?

Horton · 11/12/2008 20:27

I do have one slightly filth-averse DD, FAQ, so have no idea of the challenges involved with three boys. With us it's the other way round. I'm sitting around going 'Dirt, what dirt?' and my daughter is trying to clean spots off the floor with a baby wipe. Ahem.

Horton · 11/12/2008 20:27

I think I just outed myself as filthier than a toddler.

BellaKissedSanta · 11/12/2008 21:42

No shame there, Horton. Not on this thread. Minging and proud, we are.

Are you going for day 4 with the shorts tomorrow gingerninja ?

Personally I have been wearing the same jeans and fleece (clean t shirt and undies mind) all this week but I do feel a wash coming on.

Off to snuggle in my clean sheets now - night all!

bozza · 11/12/2008 22:52

faq your DS1 only needs clean bottoms daily. Matching pjs not a necessity IMO. Also some spills can be sponged IME and I have a messy 7yo (messier than the 4yo).

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 22:56

clean PJ bottoms you mean?

specialmagiclady · 11/12/2008 23:03

A bit of porridge on clothes nobody sees doesn't bother me. Wee does.

So DS1 who's 3.10 wears his for up to a week, DS2 1.8, wears his for 1 day - I'm pushing for 2.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 23:15

presuming you mean that he only needs clean PJ bottoms let me explain a little further.

He only wears PJ's bottoms when it's very cold (ie at the moment) - none of his PJ's match - infact most of his "PJ's" are actually packs of very cheap T-shirt.

He wakes up sodden every morning, soaked right up to his armpits, I have to wash his pillow case, sheet and duvet cover everyday. He doesn't use a duvet (even in this cold weather) as the plastic duvet protectors make him hot and sweaty and unable to sleep, instead I bought him some fleecy blankets - which are quick and easy to wash an dry.

In other words I have to do an ENTIRE bed change for him every single day.

Horton · 12/12/2008 09:01

Oh, your poor little boy, FAQ. That must be horrid for all of you.

gingerninja · 12/12/2008 09:47

Alas Bella I didn't make day 4. They were still clean though so I could have but her last pair of tights were filthy so she'd have had cold legs.

Personally I wear clothes and fold them back up and put them away for another day. Nothing stinky about me. (PS and I don't wear deodorant)

LilRedWG · 12/12/2008 09:49

Weetabix is a big factor here too, that or a particularly sweaty night.

I am a slattern and I don't care, so there!

NotBigJustBolshy · 12/12/2008 09:50

Sensible older dd - for a week. ds (3) - until he spills his breakfast down them or hands me the trousers saying "Theys got some wees in them".

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 12/12/2008 09:52

Until they smell.

Sometimes, that is one night, as she has an accident. Sometimes it is 3.

daftpunk · 12/12/2008 10:04

about 3 times...sometimes ds falls asleep in his uniform, i don't mind...saves us both time in the morning.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 12/12/2008 10:34

yes is a nightmare Horton. We've tried the alarm - but just taken it back to the bed wetting clinic on Monday as it simply wasn't working for him.

Thankfully (for both of us) I should hopefully be picking his pescription up for the desmopressin today - which slow urine production (ie he shouldn't wet the bed at night). As we're going through a stressful period as a family (with a house move coming up) nurse suggested we try it for 6 months to get is through the unsettled period - and to give us both a break from the wet beds and washing load.

It could trigger his own body's hormones into action - or it might not and we might be back to square one again in 6 months time - but at least we'll get a break from it for a bit

I feel especially for him as DS2 was dry at night (of his own accord) when he was 3 and I can't count on my fingers how many accidents he's had since then (and even then mostly it's a dribble that's come out and he howls hysterically - so I go and calm him down and send him off to the toilet and he's fine - the dribble has dried by the time he gets back).

Must be horrible being 8yrs old and seeing your little brother dry at night before you are, I just hope that DS1 isn't a very late dry nighter, and that DS3 isn't also early like DS2 was - as it will be even worse for him if they're both dry and he's not

BibiJesus · 12/12/2008 10:49

Well I should never have started this thread, dd has done a pair of pjs every night since!

Maybe I'll start a thread about how I want her to have clean ones every night and she'll make 'em last a fortnight.
