Decluttering Thread 13 - Hopefully Lucky For Some!

Good morning fellow sorters, chuckers & sellers! Starting a new thread as No 12 was almost full. This thread is one of my favourites & I find it hugely inspiring. I have a very long way to go as my house still resembles a jumble sale but I have got rid of a lot over the last few months plus made some money into the bargain. Last night I transferred several carrier bags of clothes that are on Vinted into a pink velvet storage chest that, ironically, hadn’t been assembled & was taking up space in DH’s office 🤣🤣🤣 It’s now in front of the storage cubes in the lounge & honestly, the pleasure I get from seeing it & the space created is immense.
I need a day to dedicate to Vinted as I have bags of clothes still to photograph & upload, some clothes to try on which may end up on there too & some TJC rings to photograph for selling. They were quite expensive but I rarely wore them & now they’re too big. I have a huge car bill to pay so the extra pennies will be great. Have a productive day all!

Marking place!

TidyClutterIsStillClutter · 12/10/2026 21:18

After the thread on re-reading books from one’s childhood, I now want to empty my donation bag and put them all back on the shelf, even though I desperately need to get this place in order.

Several more adult books in the pile. Also some of teenager’s clothing no longer wanted.

TidyClutterIsStillClutter · 13/10/2026 19:06

Back on track with the books.

Tidying today more than decluttering. Found some bedding that I had forgotten about. Laundry should be easier now.

IndianSummer78 · 14/10/2026 10:10

One t-shirt that's way too big.
Total is 5156
I'm not doing very well with it at the moment!

Squirrel I'm guessing you're new to MN, if you don't want to join in there's a "watch" button at the top of each thread for the lurkers, no need to fill up threads with place mark or following, I know you're just one person but before you know it everyone's at it and it makes threads tedious to read when that occurs.

Lloki try an animal rescue charity for the towels and cat beds. They don't wash blankets between occupants, just bin them, so are in constant need of replacements. The rucksack, you're looking at online selling if they're saleable but charity shops don't want them, if not saleable it's landfill.

Incessant clothes are my nemesis that's why this place is rammed with them. Either my own collection, or sentimental or just never looked at and gone through, from others. I recently got rid of some old work clothes from a past life and it's so hard letting go of the person I used to be.

Ruby considering the time of year the coats may sell online somewhere soon. If you're deciding between charity shop and clothing bank bin, go with whichever is nearest! Those art kits are the kind of thing you can leave on a wall outside and someone will take them, especially with Christmas looming.

Tidy clutter if you can afford to repurchase them again if you change your mind, I'd let them go. I've found the to-be-read pile is essentially just another long list of things-to-do.

Back in August I decided to give Vinted a go. Got quickly hooked, drove DH a bit mad. I don't have a CD or DVD player but loads of discs, have two bookcases and other shelves full of books, loads of clothes / shoes etc, and boxes under my bed that haven't seen the light of day in over 5 years.
At first I felt a little overwhelmed getting it all photo'd and uploaded but then read little and often is the way to go. I also looked at other sellers and their prices, most being small items for a quid. Nah - put them higher because people always try to knock you down. The higher price goes more often than not!
I've sold 138 items, some in bundles, making almost £700! Still loads to go, but after clearing out my mum's house a few years ago, I decided I didn't want the family to have to get rid of my sh1te when I'm gone.
Feels deeply cleansing 😍

Oh, the tossing junk in a shoebox dejunk is going exceptionally well.

The other night, I did the drawers in the hallway. Two shoeboxes this time they are now with in the garage properly labelled and on the shelf I threw a fair bit of it away too.

There is now room to put other items in the hallway drawers like hats and gloves as well as the dog lead

I’ve got a massive bag of dog related things in the garage and one of the things I’m going to do this week is go through it and chuck a lot of old ragged dog collars and leads.

This weekend, I’m going to box up some of DH’s things that will enable me to use a cupboard in the office. No one wants any of this stuff but I can’t throw it away. So it’s going to go on one of the many Suitcases I had in the loft, but it will go in the back of my wardrobe for another time or when one of the children decide maybe they would like some of it.

@RubySparrow I yearn for that space too. I managed to get that in the office this week. Walking in there feels such a lighter place to be and a nicer place to work.

IndianSummer78 · 14/10/2026 18:45

Tried to find some more things.
1 x hair mousse finished up
1 x shampoo finished up
1 x ribbon used up in a craft project
1 x pair of boots that I keep going over on my ankle with

Several more books in the donate pile. I keep back any that don’t have an audiobook. Later I might look for them on kindle.

Started deleting some audiobooks from my audible plus list. I tend to collect a specific genre, listen to them until I lose interest, then move onto the next. And now I delete any unwanted and unlistened instead of having the visual clutter.

SquirrelSoShiny · 16/10/2026 09:35

@IndianSummer78I'm extremely not new was just in a hurry 😁 I was trying to remember how many of these threads I've been on over the years and can't. Happily I'm finally making progress thanks to ADHD meds!

I have definitely managed to get better at obvious rubbish but still struggle with actually removing items when there are barriers. So I currently have a large box of recycling waiting for tip run and a large bag and box for the charity shop. I don't really understand why people are encouraged to be consumers, then removal is made so difficult AND then people are shocked at fly tipping. I've got clothes that are over a decade old so not a pleasure shopper in any sense but people who love fast fashion must be drowning in clutter!

TheNoWord · 16/10/2026 09:54

W/E 11/10 Week 41

Must do better! Really going through a phase where I just don't want to get rid of anything but still have far too much. Maybe I just need to coast in maintenance mode until Christmas. Need to give some thought as to how to not bring too much in over Christmas too.

Acheyelbows · 17/10/2026 08:47

No major decluttering happening but binned pyjamas with failed elastic, socks with holes and have a charity bag filling with a winter coat, woolen trousers, tops I don't like and a set of coding books.
30 stacked paving slabs have been used up to make a path in the garden.
Book series (15 books) brought to work to add to the library. 4 basketballs brought to work.
No sales of items listed online.
DC1 has requested the white goods in the garage which will make a lot of room.
DC2 has asked to take the mattress and bed base from the spare room. Unfortunately no date for the transfers to their own homes yet but I'm hopeful it will happen.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/10/2026 09:22

I've been watching these videos on YouTube - the channel is Space Maker Method, and she travels all over the world, so there are some quite relatable stories (showing normal sized UK homes). The ones I've linked feature a single Mum in a 3 bedroomed house. They might be worth watching while decluttering, as a sort of tidy-along!

Now filling my fourth bag-for-life with books. Far more positive about my progress, although still rather slow.

Old shirt in ragbag. Soft cotton clothes with holes in my dusters and cleaning bag.

DS took a couple of his many boxes from the garage. All the boxes etc landed there unknown to me between flatshare moves. The other DCs have stuck to the rule that my house is no longer their storage facility. I can only hope that DS gets a move on with clearing his stuff out.

TheNoWord · 17/10/2026 10:26

I finally managed to get the DCs to take the last of their belongings from our house last year. Admittedly not a huge number of things, but they have been with us through four house moves!

The eldest is 40 this month 😱

IncessantNameChanger · 17/10/2026 19:30

I have got rid of 49 things today and sorted two more bags of things im happy to let go of. Again listed a few things on Vinted which have zero views as predicted so im pretty sure all of this will be just donated too. I reallt have hit a brick wall with trying t sell things.

Today's total is 1054 things out this year. Im well ahead of items out versus in but somehow I have lost my in number. Need to Total them up again as I'd love to stick to ten out for one in

SpryLilacBird · 18/10/2026 15:46

Hi everyone,

I last posted in July. Since then I have binned the following girlswear - 5 x leggings, vest, jumper, 27 x underwear, shorts, jumpsuit, snood, pair of jeans and school polo shirt. I've also given away a girls bicycle.

Out - 40 items.
Total out in 2026 - 349 items

I have about 6 bags of stuff ready for the charity shop. We have been carless for a while, but hoping to get these to the charity shop by the end of the month. I've also had quite a few vinted sales which I'll tot up soon and add to my total. I'm now up to 500 items listed on vinted!

The plan is to continue going through and decluttering the garage and DDs toys.

BatShitCrazyWoman mentioned being in maintenance mode and that's what I'm striving for. I've been decluttering for three years. I've gotten rid of so much stuff but still have loads to go.

CheesePlantFeet, keep going! I had the same thing in that the more I got rid of, the more I seemed to have. It still feels like that sometimes! But, the house has never looked better (if I do say so myself). I'm finally starting to see the difference and I realised the other day that I can't remember the last time someone in the house moaned that they couldn't find something. That alone has been worth all the time and effort!

Welcome to all the new declutterers and good luck!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/10/2026 16:28

I listed a couple of things on Vinted yesterday, and have sold one of them. I still have a few more things to list. I've got a bag containing a winter coat, a jumper, a casserole dish and some wine glasses to take to the charity shop this week so a bit more successful maintenance.

IndianSummer78 · 18/10/2026 18:10

I've seen that channel batshit it's quite good

Omg no word at least it's all gone at last!

Sounds promising acheyelbows hope they collect soon

Due to some other storage space becoming free I was able to decant:
the contents of 6 sun damaged boxes and 1 dented tin into it
(Boxes and tin went into recycling).
1 body scrub used up.
1 old mattress went to the tip and
3 lots of old plastic wrapping too
1 belt into donating bag
Total is 5174

IndianSummer78 · 19/10/2026 22:36

One old mattress protector that's threadbare.
Total is 5175

IndianSummer78 · 20/10/2026 22:45

1 x damaged wallet
1 x hand cream used up
1 x eyeliner with the consistency of glue
Total is 5178

IncessantNameChanger · 21/10/2026 08:58

I sold things on Vinted yesterday. Im on a early half term so going to have another clear out
