People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

I've also never pre soaked anything before washing in the machine. If DD is sick, I spray a bit of stain remover on the sheet, leave for 5 mins and wash.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 22/03/2024 21:38

I do it all once a week but it all goes into the same wash and is tumble dried, though I tan once a week and it’s me DH and a big hairy dog in the bed (for anyone who wants to come for me re the dog I legit don’t give a flying F 😂)

soupmaker · 22/03/2024 21:39

I too was feeling like a domestic goddess as I change sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases weekly and even iron the pillowcases.

Pillow protectors and matters protectors however are done once a year, if that. And our down duvet has been taken to the dry cleaners twice in 10 years! Think I'm actually a minger.

SplendidUtterly · 22/03/2024 21:40

Clean pillowcase everyday.
Change the rest of the bedding once a month.
I never get into bed unless i have showered first and have clean clothes on.

saraclara · 22/03/2024 21:51

Why are you pre-soaking? I've never done that. And why wash mattress protectors so often?

When all the family was living here, sheets and pillowcase once a week, duvet covers fortnightly. And bung in the tumble drier if it's not drying weather.
Mattress protectors when it crossed my mind and I wasn't busy.

Now it's just me, I do everything once a week.

shakeitoffsis · 22/03/2024 21:55

Superking bed - fitted sheet, 6 pillow cases, duvet cover. I can have it all back on for lunch time if I stick in in at 8am and use the dryer.

bakewellbride · 22/03/2024 21:59

Every Friday I strip the beds but not everything always gets washed that day as I have cloth nappies and other things to worry about.

Our bed- 4 pillow cases, 1 sheet, 1 quilt cover.

DD's cot - sheet and sleeping bag

Ds' bed - 2 pillow cases, 1 sheet, 1 quilt cover

All of the above gets washed weekly. I don't bother pre soaking though, just chuck in!

TeabySea · 22/03/2024 22:06

I change the bedding once a week but I don't necessarily wash it all together in one go. I use a flat sheet, so duvet cover is changed monthly.
Typical week would be:
Monday- Bath sheet, 4 pillow cases, variety of socks and underwear.
Tuesday - School shirts, t-shirts, 2 hand towels, 2 flanels, mattress protector
Wednesday - 2 medium towels, socks, underwear, tea towels
Thursday - Fitted sheet, miscellaneous clothes
Friday - Flat sheet, any other random washing left

mitogoshi · 22/03/2024 22:23

Sheet, duvet covers, his pillow protector and my pillow cases fortnightly, throw dps in weekly (men sweat more and yellow!) mattress protector monthly.

All my bedding fits in one wash load

buswankerz · 22/03/2024 22:24

@Perfectlystill sleeping on fresh clean sheets, it helps me sleep.

But why do you need to bleach them?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/03/2024 22:28

Sheets and duvet covers every 2 weeks
Pillowcases changed weekly
All washed with anything else to make up a load with a colour catcher on 60

Mindovermatter247 · 22/03/2024 23:10

every other Sunday I do the beds…..

Bellyblueboy · 22/03/2024 23:12

All bedding is white. I wash everything except the protector once a week - because pets sleep in the bed. I tumble dry the sheets in winter - hang them on the line on the better weather

AdultFemaleWoman · 22/03/2024 23:29

buswankerz · 22/03/2024 13:45

I strip and wash all bedding every 3 days. That includes duvet cover, pillow cases and fitted sheet.

I buy mine in white so I can throw them in the bath with some bleach for 20 minutes at the end of the week.

Crikey that seems a bit overkill. Why do you need to bleach every other wash? Are you married to a miner?

Princesssuperstar · 23/03/2024 01:17

Duvet cover, pillow cases and bed sheet gets washed every Sunday, once monthly my mattress topper/protector and I hoover the mattress and every 6 month I flip the mattress

MyLeftKnee · 23/03/2024 06:47

I work in a boarding house. All beds washed after 7 days (some kids only board a couple of nights a week). Protectors are done 1/2 termly. All bedding is ironed. My personal bedding is whenever we feel it's time.

suki1964 · 23/03/2024 08:09

You are all going to hate me

Four pillow cases, 4 under covers, duvet cover, top sheet, bottom sheet, mattress protector , folded sheet under the protector his side of the bed - weekly - and Ironed

Pillow protectors ( I have feather pillows and it stops feathers poking through ) about 4 times a year

I also vacuum and turn the mattress

I dont rush to wash/dry/iron - wash and dry yes, I hang them out when I can, on an airer when I cant but I iron at leisure

DH sweats at night and he totally trashed our last mattress. It was one of those sprung ones with the latex or whatever topping and couldn't be turned. It just soaked up his sweat and the top went mouldy and when I cut into it, the springs were rusty so yep Im now paranoid. When we strip the bed, we put the mattress on its side and let it air all day with the windows open. Then its vacuumed and turned

Bloody hell.

Sounds like a full time job just changing the bed, never mind the laundry.

saraclara · 23/03/2024 08:35

I have a sheet, a duvet cover and two pillowcases. Washed once a week. White seersucker for all but the sheet, so no ironing.

Protectors done when I think they need it.

Changing and laundering bed linen almost seems to be a hobby for some.

suki1964 · 23/03/2024 11:13

@saraclara at least DH helps me with it, I cant even lift the darn mattress :)

Seriously the episode with the previous mattress has made me like this. I started to notice wee little black areas then when I realised it was mould I was horrified . Never again will I get a mattress that cant be turned. I was mortified, even too embarrassed to take it to the tip. DH took the chain saw to it and took it in pieces. I know Im extreme

Before that, I was just the same as anyone else, washed what was needed as and when

The ironing is no bother, I have a press. Fold and put through, presses four layers not a bother. Takes more time to iron a shirt :)

Five mins to strip the bed and tip the mattress on its side, 15 mins to make it again - including vacuuming and turning the mattress . Five mins to load an unload each machine load - takes two , ten mins to hang out Less then an hour a week ( excluding ironing ) which is fitted in between whatever else is going on

Its eases my mind. Same as I pull the duvet and top sheet back every day before leaving the house to let the bed air, make it up when I get home

wateraddict · 23/03/2024 16:23

@chewbaccca I save time because I don't have to wait for a load to be done when I get up, so it gives me 1-2 extra drying hours. I can do more washloads in a day, or I can hang it out before going to work. It's helpful if I need a quick turnaround in items, like favourite sports gear etc.

whatsbestforme · 06/04/2024 01:24

How do people wash bath mats?
My machine doesn't spin if only 1 item in it.
I sometimes throw in towels with it.

Topseyt123 · 06/04/2024 01:43

Bathmats are just washed in the same loads as everything else. Not separately. Why would I do them separately?

With towels or bedding, on a normal full load, not just to keep it company
