People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

If you have spare bedding then you could put the wash loads on a delay timer overnight if your machine has one, so they are ready to hang each morning when you wake up? Then the actual washing happens while you sleep and you can put another load on when you wake. Thai could help if you have either a smaller machine or want to wash light and dark loads separately. This saves me a lot of time. I load up the machine the night before and wake up to it all ready.

I send out all bed linens to be washed each week, cannot be doing with the hassle so chuck some money at it. Totally worth it in my opinion.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/03/2024 18:40

Tumble drier. New model, very efficient. All sheets and towels on the same day.

Fam23 · 22/03/2024 18:44

I wash ours weekly, I don’t soak anything though beforehand because I add a bit of napisan in the wash, and just chuck it in the tumble dryer to dry over winter. I wash the mattress protectors as needed.
I’ve got into a good routine of stripping the beds first thing on a Friday and then straight in the machine if it’s dry out or I will be home after the school run for the tumble dryer. If not then I’ll put it on to tumble dry when we’re home in the evenings.

LynetteScavo · 22/03/2024 18:45

I only have white bedding (DS only has dark) so each set can be washed together and I have a tumble dryer. I also have at least two sets for each bed, so if I am line drying there is no need to wait for it to be dried and ironed. The whole change can't take longer than 20mins. I'd happily change 4 beds each weekend. One of my DC used to need a daily change. Such is life.

EcstaticMarmalade · 22/03/2024 18:53

Pillowcases I change every two
day, although I don’t use the same pillowcase twice, I switch pillow. Sheets and duvet cover change every four days. So do one load with all that every four days.

Started doing that during a rosacea flare and it helped get things under control I think so I kept doing it.

Have a combined washer drier so I add a thirty minute dry cycle to bedding load started then dry it over a couple of clothes horses in the spare room and switch in the dehumidifier there.

Takes next to no time to strip and change bed because I don’t use a mattress protector, I use a duvet wrapped round a mattress topper. It really makes it easier to change sheets as the topper is so light. I can fold back the corners to pop the sheet round, don’t even need to walk round the bed.

Started doing that when I started to struggle lifting even the corner of the mattress due to chronic illness. Making that lighter work helped me wash bedding more often, before that I struggled to do once a week.

The duvet gives the topper enough width that the fitted sheet says on well and it’s lovely and soft to sleep on.

Wash the duvet once a month. I also have a fitted sheet on the actual mattress which I wash once a quarter, maybe less.

Droolylabradors · 22/03/2024 18:53

Emperor set. Bottom sheet, duvet cover and pillow cases x4 weekly. Kids double sets fortnightly.

We have a heated airer. All on a hot wash then on the airer for 24hrs and all dry and put away.

No mattress protector.

Simonjt · 22/03/2024 18:58

All our bedding is white so it can be washed together. Our duvet covers, sheet and pillow cases go in together, our two childrens then also easily all fit in a second load.

The only thing we don’t wash every week is the mattress protectors, they get done every four weeks usually. Obviously if someone has been ill, a nappy leaks etc then they are washed.

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 22/03/2024 19:00

Why did it take you so long?

How does washing overnight save you time? It’s exactly the same as daytime washing, surely?

Wonderfulstuff · 22/03/2024 19:04

Do you always pre-soak in vanish? Unless they are heavily stained your regular laundry detergent should be more than enough.

Well that makes two of us. Only do mattress and pillow protectors if your unicorn is passing my way.

In my defence I do the pillow protectors as dh is an absolute sweat head and we have stupidly ££ latex pillows, otherwise I wouldn’t

TimeToStopLurking · 22/03/2024 19:08

Yes I wash bedding weekly. Mattress protector roughly 1 to 2 times a month if nothing spilled. I iron whilst it's all wet if I can and then hang up. That way it can either go straight back on or folded and put away when dry. I don't have a garden so use a dehumidifier and it's usually dry same day if the wash goes on in the morning.

I personally like an ironed sheet plus steam will kill off any dust mites etc.

caringcarer · 22/03/2024 19:13

I wash all sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases. I only wash mattress protectors about once a month.

BusyBeeBee82 · 22/03/2024 19:18

I do sheets, pillowcases, mattress and pillow protectors every week and the duvet cover every fortnight, apart from winter where I leave it for the month. I cba wrestling with the duvet cover each week - it’s a proper mare.

Apart from it being hygienic to change sheets every week, I just love the fresh sheets on a Sunday night, helps me settle in preparation for whatever fresh hell I end up in at work on Monday 🤣🤣

caringcarer · 22/03/2024 19:18

I line dry in summer and autumn on nice days but say what the hell and throw them all in to tumble dryer in the winter along with towels too. I never iron I tumble, shake and fold.

Kellogg1 · 22/03/2024 19:21
  1. I wasn’t aware pillow protectors were a popular thing 😆
  2. How do you all have time to wash all of the bedding weekly (2/3 weeks for me)
  3. why the f**k are we presoaking it all each time, doesn’t the washer just … you know … wash it?

What a palava. Whack it all in the wash on 60 every 2/3 weeks and then in the tumble dryer. Sheet, duvet cover and pillow cases. Spend the time I’ve saved by not presoaking or bleaching or generally making a mountain out of a molehill relaxing or enjoying the day.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 22/03/2024 19:23

I wash fitted sheet, duvet cover and 6 pillow cases. It's superking so I split over 2 washes.

Mattress and pillow protectors get washed one a month or whenever it's a sunny day and that's a third load .

I live on my own and my partner only stays occasionally so I can get away with that routine

Lemoncokezero · 22/03/2024 19:29

I do our bed weekly as there's just us. The sheets pillowcase and duvet cover. I do the sheet with the white wash. I use a mattress protector but don't was that loads like maybe 6 weeks to 2 months.

Starseeking · 22/03/2024 19:35

All bedding goes in the wash weekly except mattress protector, which gets washed monthly.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 22/03/2024 19:48

Deliadidit · 22/03/2024 13:37

I wash sheets and pillowcases once a week, duvet covers every fortnight.

I do the same

EcstaticMarmalade · 22/03/2024 19:54

I don’t presoak. I just add some stain remover to the drawer if it needs it. I also add some astonish laundry disinfectant to the softener.

Hatty65 · 22/03/2024 19:57

I wash our bedding every week. KS duvet cover, sheet and 4 pillowcases. All in together on a 40 wash then out on the line if possible - into the tumble dryer if not. No pre-soaking needed.

I do DS bedding as well. Can do one lot in a morning, one in an afternoon on a Saturday.

Didley · 22/03/2024 20:36

I wash everything once a week
Mattress and pillow protectors every 3 weeks.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/03/2024 20:57

We do our bed every Friday - but the mattress protector much less frequently. We have four sets of winter linen (brushed cotton) and four of summer so it doesn’t need to all be washed and dried in one go. The spare bed gets done sporadically - DP often goes through there because he snores and the cat likes to lie on it, but we rarely have actual guests in it.
