People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

@buswankerz how dirty is your bedding getting that it needs weekly bleaching?

InSpainTheRain · 22/03/2024 17:16

I wash the duvet cover, pillowcases and bottom sheet every week. I wash the mattress protector every 2 weeks. The heavy zip cover on the mattress every 3 months. I love getting in clean bedding so part of the reason I do it is because I love how it feels.

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 22/03/2024 17:21

I do one week: DS's duvet cover, pillow cases(2), pillow protectors (2) and mattress protector and then our super king bed - duvet cover, pillow cases (4), pillow protectors (4) and sheet.

The following week same as above, but do our mattress protector and leave DS's on.

A bit of a pain with thicker bedlinen in winter, but always get everything dry...

ahoyhoyhoy · 22/03/2024 17:22

1 white sheet & 4 white pillowcases - I usually throw any other whites in as well, another wash on the same day for light coloured duvet cover & pillow cases. Will put my son’s bedding in at the same time.
Every week for as long as I can remember.

Wigtopia · 22/03/2024 17:22

Sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers once a week mostly. In summer twice a week when it’s really sweaty nights (weds and either sat or Sunday).

mattress protectors once a month

duvets and pillows to the dry cleaners once a year.

but DH does the laundry so not something I have to concern myself with. I’d probably do it less if it was my job!!

he doesn’t pre-soak anything but does use a dettol antibacterial liquid when washing human or animal bedding (separate washes for human and animal of course!!)

Neveralonewithaclone · 22/03/2024 17:25

Wash pillowcases, sheets, duvet covers once a week but on different days.

I also, this pains me to confess, throw away mattress protectors and pillows and buy new about three times a year.

Also, at the end of winter, i throw away the winter duvet and buy a new one the following winter.

This isn't cleanliness just kind of evil.

Shardlake63 · 22/03/2024 17:30

I wash the pillowcases, duvet cover and fitted sheet off our double bed weekly. The mattress and pillow protectors less often, about once a month on average. We also have a double bed in our spare room, which I change when it has been used (by visiting adult children usually, or if either my husband or I have used it due to illness). The mattress and pillow protectors only get washed every three or four months on the spare, as it's not used that much.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 22/03/2024 17:37

Everything including protectors weekly and the duvet monthly.

But I've only one bed to do. Now idea how anyone with 3/4 sets would manage it without cracking up. Time & slave to do it must be a nightmare.

Fuck me! You must all be shiny clean

🤣
we’ve always had a shower every night, lol my husband used to work on building sites so always dusty, lol also sweaty in the summer, he is bald so his pillows are oily

This has blown my mind

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/03/2024 17:41

It's two wash loads in our house - that's sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers. Mattress protectors less often. No pre-soaking. Dry on line if weather permits, tumble dryer otherwise. Doesn't take any longer than other laundry, but I don't do both loads on the same day.

Teenagemum34 · 22/03/2024 17:43

Just duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases weekly here, no soaking but 60o wash. Protectors every month or two.

Favouritefruits · 22/03/2024 17:44

I wash all our bedding once a week, bottom sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases. I put them in a 60min wash cycle so I can get three lots of bedding done in six hours usually a Monday. I wouldn’t fancy sleeping in bedding more than a week old,I wouldn’t dream of wearing clothes for 6 hours plus a day for a whole week without washing them so why would I do it with my bedding?

Meadowfinch · 22/03/2024 17:45

I change ds' & my beds on the weekend, then two white sheets and 4 pillow cases go in one wash then hang them out on the line. Take them in at night and put in the airing cupboard.

One coloured duvet cover & 2 pillow cases go in the following morning, then out on the line, and the same on the third day.

So it takes three days to wash & dry all of them, but takes me 5 mins each day.

NC03 · 22/03/2024 17:46

I have loads of bedding so no worries about drying

3 x pillowcases
Superking duvet cover
Superking fitted sheet

Wash pillow protectors and mattress protectors less often

That is really wasteful and stupid.

NeverNameChange · 22/03/2024 17:57

We have a mixture or dark, coloured and white so I usually just mix them in with the clothes washes. I don't pre soak or do the protectors all the time.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 22/03/2024 17:58

Four white/cream pillow cases, one king sheet, one king duvet cover, white with some floral pattern. Baby bed sheet and diddy duvet, both white. All goes in together. I try and remember to add baking soda.

I started white bedding as I never had enough to make up a white wash. my towels are white too so I do one bedding, one towel wash a week. Now I've got a family I guess we could have coloured bedding but I now like the white bedding.

Certainly doesn't take a day!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 22/03/2024 18:00

Oh we forked out for dulopillow pillows and mattress toppers. Dont need protectors. Never ever changed.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2024 18:00

Mattress protector, fitted sheet, duvet cover plus duvet, pillow slip and pillow protector - I have a dryer so it takes very little time to dry.

AngelinaFibres · 22/03/2024 18:19

Sheets, duvet cover, pillow case, any protectors washed every week. Whites washed separately at 60°. Coloured stuff at 40°. Everything dried in the tumble dryer then finished off on the radiators or in the conservatory ( very large South facing room that gets lovely and warm in the sun). I am now retired but did the same when I was working . Absolutely love fresh clean bedding. Husband does the ironing unless they are seersucker ones that don't need it.

Goinggreymammy · 22/03/2024 18:29

I usually do fortnightly. I did 3 loads today - one for each child's bed. I do their fluffy blankets and any squishmallows the girls use as pillows (don't ask!!) or fluffy toys they snuggle with as well as sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers. The last load is nearly dry now.
I will do my own tmw. I strip one bedand put it on before breakfast. Then the rest as each load is washed. No dryer here. Dried on line today and go straight back on beds. If its wet I put spare set on beds and wash them over a few days, dry them over the bannister each night. It doesn't take much time. Just fits in with whatever I'm doing that day.

largeprintagathachristie · 22/03/2024 18:32

Why the pre-soaking?

mdinbc · 22/03/2024 18:34

I am surprised to hear people washing the mattress and pillow protectors weekly.
I don't have pillow protectors, and the mattress cover only gets washed once or twice a year when I vacuum the mattress.

Since I use top and bottom sheet, the duvet cover only needs washing about every other month. The sheets and pillow cases are washed weekly.

Squidlette · 22/03/2024 18:36

Kids do their own, fortnightly. I wash them though. I do mine every week or two. Doesn't take that long, although moving the mattress round is a pita. Mine are done on Sundays. Washed then draped around to dry.
