People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

I wash sheets and pillowcases once a week, duvet covers every fortnight.

Same here!
Do mine on 30 degrees, 30
minute wash, with two caps of astonish sanitizer.

SpringSprungALeak · 22/03/2024 14:02

I don't use 'pillow protectors' but I do have 2 pillow cases on each pillow.

weekly in winter, twice a week in summer

double fitted sheet
double duvet cover
10 pillow cases

40° wash & on the line, unless it's actually raining then it goes on an airer (no dryer)

mattress protector as & when. Fairly frequently (once a month maybe)

Bumble84 · 22/03/2024 14:04

I wash weekly in summer and all my bedding is white so fits in one wash. Doesn’t seem to take that long.

Changingplace · 22/03/2024 14:05

I’ve never pre soaked anything but I’d also never buy white bedding.

I wash pillow cases duvet & sheets once a week and it fits in one load. I have multiple sets so I’m not rushing to get it dry and back on the bed, just get the clean set on while the washing machine runs.

VillageLite · 22/03/2024 14:11

I don’t have under pillowcases or mattress protectors.

Every week each bed gets changed - new sheet, duvet cover, pillowcases.

One king bed, two single.

The used bedding is put in the washing basket, and I try to wash it and iron it that week. But I don’t need to turn it around before bedtime, because each bed has three sets of bedding, so I can put a clean set on without washing the one that was already on iyswim.

Was feeling a bit smug in a domestic goddess kind of way until I realised that bedding apparently includes pillow and mattress protectors.
I wash duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases every week.
I wash protectors if there is a blue moon or a passing unicorn.
Turns out I am not a domestic goddess.

Sprogonthetyne · 22/03/2024 14:13

I don't do the mattress protector or pillow protector as often and I only have coloured bedding, so quilt cover, pillow cases and sheets (plus waterproof sheet for kids) all go in together.

I have a 4yo who occasionally wets the bed, so also have a spare duvet. That way if hers needs washing I don't need to worry about getting it dry the same day.

Same! We're in disgrace together!

Duvet cover, fitted sheet and pillow cases every week. Mattress protector every couple of months. Don’t use pillow protectors. And it doesn’t need pre-soaking, just goes straight in as a normal load.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 22/03/2024 14:15

Superking bed

4 x pillowcases
4 x pillow protectors
1 x fitted sheet
1 x flat sheet
1 x duvet cover (sometimes this is fortnightly in cooler or very hot weather due to flat sheet)

No pre-soaking, just washed. Has to go in as 2 loads.

Mattress protector washed maybe 6 weekly (or sooner if needed).

Adult children do their own beds. SK guest bed is done between guests.

Sylver75 · 22/03/2024 14:16

I'd love to wash mine every week but I have no drier and only a clothes horse/airer in the living room, it can take days to dry them so I wash every 3/4 weeks. 😬 I do sheets and pillowcases, duvet cover less often.

BodenCardiganNot · 22/03/2024 14:16

Bed linen washed every 2 to 3 weeks in our house. Nobody has died yet.

fuckssaaaaake · 22/03/2024 14:17

Fuck allllll of this

Octavia64 · 22/03/2024 14:17

It's just me now.

I wash duvet cover sheet and pillow cases weekly and they usually dry in one day (summer) or drape over bannisters (could be a while).

When I had two teens it was 3 lots of double bed bedding and in summer we had a long washing line where it would all dry. Usually weekly in summer.

Winter trickier to dry so usually fortnightly

Halfwayuporhalfwaydown · 22/03/2024 14:17

Bedding is all white. Wash pillowcases, duvet covers and sheets every 7 -10 days, more in summer. No pre-soak, wash on 30 or 40 and put outside to dry. No disinfectant, sanitiser or any other extra product because none of us are immunosuppressed.

gocompare · 22/03/2024 14:18

Try and wash it once a week.

We have night owl duvets - they don't need a duvet cover and then hang them up to dry.

Takes about an hour in the summer. Have to tumble dry in the winter.

Octavia64 · 22/03/2024 14:18

Oh, I do have really bad hot flushes so they do really need doing after a week!

concernedchild · 22/03/2024 14:18

Sheet, duvet cover & all pillow cases. Every week. It takes at most three hours

woahboy · 22/03/2024 14:20

Sheets
Pilllw cases
Duvet cover
All weekly.

Mattress protector
Pillow protectors
Every month

OP how often are you washing your sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover if not weekly?

Westsussex · 22/03/2024 14:21

I wash all bedding, at least once a week, sometimes a day or so earlier.

Your bed harbours bacteria (lab tests found that swabs from pillowcases unwashed for a week harboured 17,000 times more colonies of bacteria than samples taken from a toilet seat. - this is what comes up online)

But I also just love the feel of fresh bedsheets ☺️

I can fit all bedding from our king-size bed into one wash and then the dryer, so those can be done in an hour or so.

I pop in some Napisan as it removes staines safely and kills bacteria, and I use my favourite detergent and conditioner. Our white sheets look great each time. Vanish powder is even better in the wash, but trying to reduce chemicals in the home, so only use this now and again xx

I strip and wash all bedding every 3 days. That includes duvet cover, pillow cases and fitted sheet.

I buy mine in white so I can throw them in the bath with some bleach for 20 minutes at the end of the week.

And this is why the planet is fucked. Absolute insanity!

bloodyhellKen22 · 22/03/2024 14:22

I do our coloured duvet and white sheet/bottom pillow cases together every week - haven't had any colour running yet but it's a risk I'm willing to take.

YouAndMeAndThem · 22/03/2024 14:22

That's 2 loads here, each load takes 1 hr 30 and then hung out on the line, that's like 30 mins actual labour taking off the sheets, putting them in the machine and hanging them out? Why does it take you a full day? On the day I wash the sheets, I strip everyone beds when they're all up, usually by 7.30, first load out after school run, and 2nd load in, then hung out at lunch time. In between times I've done all my other cleaning. Then usually a load of clothes washed in the afternoon too!

Why?

CherryBlossom321 · 22/03/2024 14:23

Weekly - pillowcases, sheets, duvet covers.
Monthly - Mattress and pillow protectors
Three monthly - duvets
