People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

I would say mattress protector every month

duvet/pillows x2 a year

sheets and pillow cases once per week

tiredandabitfat · 22/03/2024 21:08

What are under pillowcases?

FunLurker · 22/03/2024 21:09

I wash 1 x king size bedding and 3 x double duvets every week
I was the throws that go over the beds every 2-3 weeks
The mattress and pillow protectors every 4 months.
The actual duvets every 6 months.

I do have 2 machines though, one is a 9kg and the other 12kg.

I strip and wash all bedding every 3 days. That includes duvet cover, pillow cases and fitted sheet.

I buy mine in white so I can throw them in the bath with some bleach for 20 minutes at the end of the week.

That seems really excessive. Is there a particular reason?

That's 2 loads here, each load takes 1 hr 30 and then hung out on the line, that's like 30 mins actual labour taking off the sheets, putting them in the machine and hanging them out? Why does it take you a full day? On the day I wash the sheets, I strip everyone beds when they're all up, usually by 7.30, first load out after school run, and 2nd load in, then hung out at lunch time. In between times I've done all my other cleaning. Then usually a load of clothes washed in the afternoon too!

Ah, it felt like it took me all day because my washing line isn't very long so there's only space on it to hang out 1 load at a time. It can't fit the duvet cover, mattress protector and sheet all at once so I split the laundry into colour and white loads and dry them one after each other.

It felt like I was always thinking about the laundry and doing stuff with it all day long - stripping the bed of everything, soaking the colours for 1 hour then getting them in the machine, soaking the whites for a few hours whilst the colour load dries on the line in the sun, putting the whites in the machine, bringing in the colour load, hanging up the white load, bringing in the white load and then finally putting it all back on the bed.
It wasn't constant, but just always something that needed attention throughout the day.

Pre-soaking everything because my DH gets sweat and blood (very sensitive gums that bleed easily) on the pillow cases, sheet & duvet cover and I find pre-soaking gets the stains out better than putting Vanish in my machine.

I was our sheets, duvet cover and the outer pillow cases every week but this was a 'deep clean' wash of everything and I was curious to know how many people who wash their bedding every week do the full lot or just targeted bits like me.

I do the full bedding every week for 3 beds. Duvet cover, sheets and pillowcase. It’s two loads of washing and drying. It gets done in the week around Monday whilst I’m at work and DH will shove it in the dryer when wfh if he remembers

Pebbles16 · 22/03/2024 21:14

Top pillow cases and sheets weekly. I always iron them - hate it, but love the effect ( I also iron tea towels, shoot me now!)
Bottom pillow cases and duvet covers fortnightly in cooler months. Then we switch to sheets (weekly).
Mattress and pillow protectors once a month.
Duvet gets sent off 2 x per year and pillows get washed with tennis balls once a quarter (I get overly excited by the thump sound!)

Every three days?

What on earth are you doing in there?

largeprintagathachristie · 22/03/2024 18:32

Why the pre-soaking?

In short, a husband with a sweaty head and very thin-skinned gums that bleed easily!

I find pre-soaking gets the stains out better than adding Vanish into the machine.

Bedding is all white. Wash pillowcases, duvet covers and sheets every 7 -10 days, more in summer. No pre-soak, wash on 30 or 40 and put outside to dry. No disinfectant, sanitiser or any other extra product because none of us are immunosuppressed.

Agree with every word of this

Abracadabra12345 · 22/03/2024 21:22

fuckssaaaaake · 22/03/2024 14:17

Fuck allllll of this

I so agree! 😁

Kittycat333 · 22/03/2024 21:22

I put a fresh sheet on every 2-3 days (daily in Summer). I change everything else every week (twice weekly in Summer). I've got loads of bedlinen but I send it to be washed and ironed. A lovely bed is a big indulgence for me and I've spent a fortune on top quality linen. It's worth it.

Stravaig · 22/03/2024 21:23

I'd have to name change before confessing all! In my own defence, it's just me, I sleep clothed, I live in the Highlands, no central heating or tumble dryer. (In)frequency varies with the season. My midsummer wash schedule might just rise to MN lackadaisical ...

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 21:24

I mainly wash it all weekly but I just chuck it all in the washing machine and then the tumble dryer. In the summer I’ll hang it out to dry, but not at this time of year really. Doesn’t take much time or much thought. I have never pre soaked anything, or bleached anything.

24HoursFromTulseHill · 22/03/2024 21:24

tiredandabitfat · 22/03/2024 21:08

What are under pillowcases?

The second layer of pillow cases that go underneath the top ones to protect the pillow from stains.
Some people use pillow protectors instead (I just follow my mum's habbit of a second layer of normal pillow cases).

The top ones match the duvet cover but I usually get white ones for underneath so they can be bleached if necessary.

Wash pillowcases, sheets, duvet covers once a week but on different days.

I also, this pains me to confess, throw away mattress protectors and pillows and buy new about three times a year.

Also, at the end of winter, i throw away the winter duvet and buy a new one the following winter.

This isn't cleanliness just kind of evil.

This is horrible to read.

What a selfish, wasteful attitude.

Awful.

AdoraBell · 22/03/2024 21:28

Now that it’s just DH and me just white sheets and pillow cases. We have 2 sets so I wash them every second week.

Malarandras · 22/03/2024 21:29

Pillowcases, sheet and duvet cover. It doesn’t take me that long really..

susiedaisy1912 · 22/03/2024 21:30

Mattress protector every 2 weeks. The rest of it weekly and then I wash my actual duvet every 6 weeks.

sciencemama · 22/03/2024 21:30

Duvet covers sheets pillow cases fortnightly
Mattress protectors pillow protectors monthly
Kids bedding is done alternately to our double bedding but again every fortnight
Sunny dry outside online otherwise hang over banister. Kids bedding seem to dry within few hours, ours takes a bit longer though.

Although we do all have three sets of duvet covers and pillows cases to rotate through
Maybe four double bed sheets and about ten single bed sheets and four single mattress protectors to rotate through

24HoursFromTulseHill · 22/03/2024 21:31

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 15:08

How often do you normally wash it OP?

Duvet cover, sheet & the 4 outer pillow cases I aim for once a week but with a 2 year old around the place that often slips to once a fortnight.

Mattress protector and the 4 under pillow cases get done about every 2 months - more frequently in the warmer weather and less in winter.

Just curious if people who wash their bedding every week are washing everything weekly or doing some items less frequently.

Always wash double on friday early morning before work and kids on a Friday eve though

elm26 · 22/03/2024 21:31

Every Sunday I wash our pillowcases, duvet cover, fitted sheet and DD's cot bed sheet.

Once a month I put our mattress protectors on a wash.

The key is to have all bedding the same colour, I love white so DD has white cot sheets (and a few spare pink ones in case of an accident) I can just chuck them all in together then. I put some napisan in to get rid of any bacteria or stains, 60 degree wash with fairy capsule and fairy softener. 90 minute wash with an extra spin and chuck them in the tumble dryer for an hour.

tiredandabitfat · 22/03/2024 21:31

Thank you @24HoursFromTulseHill

Not only do I not use them, I've never even heard of them or seen them in a shop!

Makes sense though, I suppose.

Will keep an eye out for them.

ODFOx · 22/03/2024 21:34

Our bedding is white so sheet, 4 pillowcases and duvet cover weekly.
Teens/adult home dwellers (with coloured bedding) cook their own bedding.
4 mattress covers at the same time monthly so they can be swapped in when the bedding is changed.
