People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

All our duvet sets are pale colours so I don't separate out the white sheets. I wouldn't wash the mattress protector every time, and we don't have pillow protectors.
Nothing gets pre soaked unless there's an actual mark puke, and no ironing!

Rocknrollstar · 22/03/2024 15:06

We wash pillowcases, bottom sheet and duvet cover every week. Mattress protector occasionally. I have old pillowcases as covers on pillows to keep them cleaner and a white duvet cover on duvet also for protection. This gets washed 2-3 times a year. When we remember or when it looks dirty. When I worked full time this did not all happen every week.

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 15:08

How often do you normally wash it OP?

Kalevala · 22/03/2024 15:11

I've been washing one fitted sheet weekly because my bed is where the cats like to settle before cleaning their muddy feet.

Full bed change once a month, this is fitted sheet, duvet cover, two pillowcases. I don't buy white!

Mattress protector and pillow protectors are washed a few times a year.

Shetlands · 22/03/2024 15:14

All the bedding is white (vintage quilted bedspreads and cushions on top).

Weekly wash for all beds is bottom fitted sheets and the flat sheet that I put under the duvet plus the top pillowcases.

Monthly wash is the above plus the mattress covers, duvet covers and under pillowcases.

I probably do the bedspreads and cushion covers every three months.

Edited to add that I can't remember the last time I ironed bedding - probably over 40 years ago! I just fold it flat in the airing cupboard.

Everything is white and I have more than one set, the clean set is put on n a Friday and the dirty set is then put n wash for following Friday

I have two bedding sets so I can avoid doing weekly wash. That's means I knlynsoend one day washing the bedding. Two sets go into one wash. But is just me so I don't have to do another but if I did spending that day once every two weeks is better than every week.

Also all my bedding is one colour (white) so I don't have to do seperate washes. Same with towels all white meaning if I can add small towels into the machine if there is room I do. Otherwise that's another wash bit I have enough towels for two weeks so again I just do one wash every fortnight.

All cotton and I don't pre soak.

I have often wondered this. It takes forever. Two king and two doubles in this house. That makes six loads to wash and dry and fold and put away.
Do most people have poly cotton stuff? That’s so easy to launder. My stuff is all quite heavy cotton so takes ages to dry.

Ours is all cotton, and 3 kingsize beds so 3 loads

Was feeling a bit smug in a domestic goddess kind of way until I realised that bedding apparently includes pillow and mattress protectors.
I wash duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases every week.
I wash protectors if there is a blue moon or a passing unicorn.
Turns out I am not a domestic goddess.

Neither am I then!
have plenty of bed linen so not worried if it doesn’t dry.

Sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers once a week. Pillow protectors and mattress protectors less often. I don’t usually soak anything though.

It does take a while but it’s only machine time- it’s not like I’m there with a washboard and mangle.

Same here. And I use tumble dryer after, outside only if it's warm and dry obvs - this takes more of my time than using tumble dryer.

Not sure why you'd soak them, we're they stained? This could've been done overnight, what took you so long?

Rosesanddaisies1 · 22/03/2024 15:24

I never presoak, and only wash mattress protector once in a while. I do 1 wash with duvet cover, sheet and pillow cases once a week, ours are all pale so go in together.

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 15:25

Why did you pre soak in vanish? I’ve never done that. If you wash it weekly it doesn’t tend to need soaking in vanish.

Also how do people cope with only 2 bedding sets?! I have 4 for each bed!

One on, one in the wash.

Why do you need 4 sets? I don't understand

One on, one in the wash.

Well I get that 🤣 But they don't last very long in good, soft condition if that's the case. I have 4 on rotation and don't think I needed a new one in over 3 years now, probably will have another 2 years with these.

Lamelie · 22/03/2024 15:28

I bought a thick brushed cotton duvet cover when it was really cold and it transformed our comfort, so much warmer. However it takes for ever to dry- I have to know I'll be in to fetch it in and out from the line, spin and tumble.
I washed it today. In first thing with the fitted bottom sheet and pillowcases, not protectors, for one hour wash. Spun and dried for half an hour with a tennis ball. On line for a couple of hours. DH is wfh so has put the heating on so now over bannister. I won't iron it and will leave it airing for as long as possible before we go to bed.

Fizbosshoes · 22/03/2024 15:28

I fall way short of the MN cleaning police standards (for clothes, bedding etc and for not always showering more than once a day) ....but I do iron - bedding not myself of course!

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 15:28

Haven’t noticed any issue with the condition or softness of ours.

Why do you need 4? I can’t store loads. We have 2 sets for each adult bed and a couple of odd spare sheets. DD has 3 sets as she still has occasional accidents.
I alternate them weekly. It’s plenty!

Yes they do? One of mine is 9 years old! The other is 5.
What are you doing to them?!

PurplePansy05 · 22/03/2024 15:30

I am weird then 🤣 I honestly never had only 2 sets. I'd find it boring. Actually, I think I have 5 as I also have a winter/Christmas set 🤣

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 15:30

There are 5 beds in our house, there’s no way I could store 20
sets!

Our bedding is all pure cotton - quite thick. On dry, sunny days it goes on the line and the sun helps keep it white. On wet or dull days it goes in the tumble dryer. I wash everything at zero temperature and it always comes out clean. Hot water just sets stains anyway so cold is better.

Salemforcuddles · 22/03/2024 15:31

I like to buy new on a regular basis although they are still all white 🤣
