People who wash their bedding every week . . .

Which exact items are you washing every week?

I took a day of annual leave yesterday to do some tidying and deep cleaning whilst DS was in nursery and did a full change of our bedding which involved 2 laundry loads with pre-soaking both in some Vanish beforehand:

1 x coloured duvet cover
4 x coloured pillow cases

1 x white sheet
1 x white mattress protector
4 x white under pillow cases

It took the best part of a day to get through everything and that was with quite warm weather so everything could dry on the line.

Do people who wash their bedding every week do all of this or are you just doing some items weekly and the rest less frequently?

I do bedding every other week. I he ave 2-3 sets for each bed so have one lot in wash, and another lot ready to replace it. Shock horror, I also iron my bedding!

Theunamedcat · 22/03/2024 14:26

I dont bother with the mattress protector until the summer and I can line dry it unless it needs to do its job then its obviously washed everything else weekly

Desecratedcoconut · 22/03/2024 14:27

I have two sets of bedding for all the beds so I can wash them all each week but not have to get them through the machine on the same day.

I don't iron them though, what fresh hell is that?

Lifebeganat50 · 22/03/2024 14:28

Duvet cover, fitted sheet, 4 pillow cases and 4 pillow protectors all go in 1 load (I have a 10kg machine)
The mattress protector has to go to the laundrette as it’s a thick quilted one and doesn’t fit in the machine so gets done maybe 3-4 times a year

ASighMadeOfStone · 22/03/2024 14:29

Sheets and pillowcases once a week on 60. Duvet cover about once every 3-4 weeks as also have a sheet between us and the duvet.

Orangeandnavy · 22/03/2024 14:29

I have often wondered this. It takes forever. Two king and two doubles in this house. That makes six loads to wash and dry and fold and put away.
Do most people have poly cotton stuff? That’s so easy to launder. My stuff is all quite heavy cotton so takes ages to dry.

Theoldwoman · 22/03/2024 14:29

I don’t do a pre-wash.

i wash our bedding twice a week due to our dog.

Two sheets
4 pillowcases
Coverlet

All washed on 90 degrees and line dried.

Once a season I wash the mattress protector and pillow protectors.

Edited

Yes, that as well for me. Several sets for each bed, so doesn't need to be dry that evening.

Have never ironed bedding in my life. Or much else tbf.

I washed 4 double duvet covers, 4 double sheets,16 pillow cases in a couple of washes the other day. Everything was thrown in together on a 60 wash. Didn't do the mattress or pillow protectors this week though.

Do you have an industrial sized washing machine?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2024 14:31

King Duvet cover. Bottom sheet and 4 pillows

Kids now do every fortnight and duvet bottom sheet and 2 pillow

Mynewnameis · 22/03/2024 14:33

I think the answers will be biased to those who do it weekly. Many don't. Me bring one of them.

BrendaSmall · 22/03/2024 14:34

We wash sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases & protectors every week in the Autumn, winter, in the spring and summer the bottom sheets and pillowcases get washed every day, we also have a clean bath towel every night after our shower too!

Well of course they will. The OP specifically asked for answers from people who wash their bedding weekly.

Topseyt123 · 22/03/2024 14:37

There's absolutely no need to pre-soak unless perhaps it has been shat or puked on.

I do everything fortnightly. It's due this weekend. All goes in on 40⁰, no need for anything else.

If we get really hot weather in the summer and are more sweaty than usual then I will change it as and when needed, which could even be daily if it is soaked through with sweat.

None of them are ever ironed. I'm not even too sure where my iron is anymore. 🤣

Cheeesus · 22/03/2024 14:39

I only wash the mattress and pillow protectors when they need it. Ie been peed on etc.

Fizbosshoes · 22/03/2024 14:42

I'm quite a scumbag compared to most MN when it comes to washing but I can't understand how you get everything dry if all clothes and towels are washed after one use and bedding weekly or more frequently, particularly as everyone else and their kids seem to have a king size bed!!

I have a tumble drier. I don't use it particularly frequently - maybe once a fortnight (and not at all during summer) but it takes ages to dry a full load of clothes. I generally use it to do a 10 min blast to "finish" drying or fluff up towels. Where and how is all this laundry being dried and aired? One poster on a previous thread gave the fact that they lived in South London and could dry clothes outside all year round as the answerConfused Last summer it literally rained for weeks over the summer where I live (South East)
In the winter probably you need to hang outside at 10ish and bring in around 3pm for optimal drying before it starts getting dusk/damp ...so you'd have to be at home at that time

MarchingOnTogether · 22/03/2024 14:43

I do fortnightly unless there's a need to do it sooner.
Usual routine is I do ours one weekend (have several sets so just take one off and put a fresh one on) and kids beds the other. I already have a mammoth pile of washing to get through (14 loads last weekend 😳) so this works better for me.

catmomma67 · 22/03/2024 14:49

pllow cases, duvet cover and fitted sheet is washed and changed every 8 days (its a shift/thing). protective coverings... if and when i remember/can be bothered.

i don't presoak because i change them so frequently.. i have 2 sets of bedding, one for use and one for the wash, that way it doesnt matter how long it takes me, i'll always have clean spare to put on.

i fold as soon as dry, i don't iron... it sounds to me like you are making yourself more work than necessary

ClonedSquare · 22/03/2024 14:51

I just chuck it all in together once a week, I've never separated whites and colours and never had them run or discolour. So duvet cover, two patterned pillowcases, two white pillowcases and the white fitted sheet. I throw in the mattress protector about once a month.

HelenHywater · 22/03/2024 14:56

I wash mine once a week - they're white so all go in together. The kids change their beds (or are meant to) once a week too, they put theirs in their washing baskets and I wash their washing on a different day. I have (and use) a drier though so it's not an issue drying them all. Like others I don't discriminate with whites and coloureds - I don't think that the coloured bed linen leaks into other clothing? (In any case apart from one of them, their bed linen is all white too)

HelenHywater · 22/03/2024 14:57

I don't iron although in an ideal world (a housekeeper maybe?) I would prefer ironed bedlinen!

Lippincote · 22/03/2024 14:59

Sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover once a week. Mattress protector and pillow protectors once every 4 to 6 weeks - when there is good weather and I can line dry them.

I don't do any pre-soaking, I usually put bedding on a 40 degree wash which takes an hour. I never iron bedding. I try to line dry but use the tumble drier if not.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/03/2024 14:59

I run holiday lets and do all that at least 4 times a week! Plus towels, bath mats, tea towels and dressing gowns. It's a pain.
