Most exciting thread of the year. Ready.... Tell me about your washing up drainer thing!

I have metal washing-up drainage rack. It was quite expensive from Laura Ashley 😬
But its gone all rusty and looks like absolute shit (see images)

I'm not that keen on the Wham type of ones like this.
I'd rather get something a bit more stylish (if a washing-up drainer can be stylish).
But I don't really like these kind of two-tiered monstrosities. And they tend to be grey and black coloured which I hate.
And the sleek Joseph and Joseph ones have that horrible drip tray which turns my stomach.

I just can't bloody find what I'm looking for - a nice-looking one, not plastic, not black/grey, no drip tray with a cutlery part that cutlery can actually stand up in.

Please show me your washing-up drainers and give me some inspiration!

I have the most annoying sink in the world - round sink with a round draining board next to it, so you can't get a washing up bowl to fit it and can only get the smallest round draining board for it, which is too small for a cutlery rack. I cannot wait to get rid of it when we change the kitchen!

Thank heavens for a dishwasher!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 16/02/2024 14:06

I have nothing useful to add because nine years on I'm still sulking that the installers didn't cut the drainage grooves into my so-called drainage board and they wouldn't come back to do it.

I want a drip tray that goes into the sink but the only ones I've seen are widthways instead of lengthways so I have a teatowel under my (cream plastic) drainer.

I'd rather have nothing and just use the dishwasher but DH is in charge of washing up and doesn't "believe in dishwashers". Weirdo.

And my washing up bowl is too small.

As I said, nothing of value to add but I do feel a bit better. Thank you for listening.

Herethere123 · 16/02/2024 14:14

Someone needs to invent one that hangs above the sink and all the drips just drip into the sink so no scuzzies.

That exists. You see it on a lot of small apartment blogs. Don't fancy it dripping all over my arms though, and you need something above the sink to hang it from.

Ducksinthebath · 16/02/2024 14:17

Or rest it either side, which is probably a better option.

The trouble is that you can't seem to get a decent draining board these days. I have been searching for a non-commercial double drainer stainless sink for ages. Franke did the exact thing but no more. I always build a little leaning tower of crockery on my current single draining board, but most goes into the dishwasher. I hate the racks, they all get disgusting. I agree with PP though, just buy a cheap one as there is a basic design flaw in all of them, ie slime build up.

We have an old silver plastic one that can take quite a lot of stuff, but the more we clean it (usually once a week) the more grey mould (if that's what it is) seems to build up and so the weekly clean now involves two or three different-sized brush to get into all the corners and takes longer and longer. I'd replace it with another similar one, but can't find anything quite like it.

It's astonishing that there aren't much better solutions to such a common issue. Those Joseph Joseph racks look like more style than substance to me.

I can't help, but I'm placemarking. Who doesn't need more elegance in their dish drainer setup?

I put almost everything in the dishwasher. Problem solved :)

Grumblebees · 16/02/2024 14:37

We were in Finland at Christmas and there was a wall cupboard over the sink with wire bottom & shelf that had all the cups and glasses in, so they could go straight in there after being washed up. Never seen it before but was handy as a tiny kitchen!

LauderSyme · 16/02/2024 14:38

I found I was, in fact, quite excited to read this thread! (I knew I was properly grown up when kitchenware and hardware shops became browsing treasure troves).

I have a cheap chrome effect drainer which is going rusty after a couple of years. I regularly scrub the rust off with wire wool, which works well but doesn't last. So I've been thinking of replacing it and was hoping this thread would be just the job.

I used to have a plastic black one but disliked the sliminess and limescale marks even less than the rust. Think I'll just buy another cheap chrome one.

I'd sooner get rid of Dh than the dishwasher. Indeed if it came down to a choice of washing machine or dishwasher I'd be going to the laundrette.

i loathe washing up

NotFastButFurious · 16/02/2024 14:43

I have one similar to this but i've had it for so long I couldn't tell you where I bought it! I think you need stainless steel to prevent them from going rusty. Mine doesn't have a cutlery holder but I have a dishwasher so most of that goes in there.

I have this one and love it. Quite an aged feel to the metal rather than being too gold and bling. The wooden handles add a nice organic touch.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 16/02/2024 14:51

@CharlotteStreetW1

you could put strips on top of the draining area, instead of making grooves ( I think Franke used to sell these, I would probably just use half dowel varnished several times).

@Ducksinthebath

do you have a local woodwork, or wood turning group? The members are often very helpful with making stuff to order, I commissioned DH a chopping board with a groove all round which he really wanted. In your case it would be an angled piece ( flat on the bottom, slope on top) with grooves.

They make things like this from worktop off cuts.

doris9034 · 16/02/2024 14:51

Apologies for a bit of a tangent, but does anyone know where to get a decent quality round draining rack? I have a round bowl and round draining board - eventually found a round drainer for £90 (yes, i nearly fainted too!) which i bought thinking at least it would last but nope!! Rusted and broken in three places now and only 2 years old 😖

Papyrophile · 16/02/2024 15:11

I have loved this thread... keep the suggestions coming.

Once upon a time, in his salad days, DH also spurned dishwashers. DM offered to buy us one. Then it was plumbed in and he was instantly converted, in fact 24 hours later, it was his idea and he'd been suggesting it forever.

Now we just have a double width sink and a washing up bowl (no drainer at all) but we mainly wash up big pans and chef's knives that don't get put in the dishwasher, and they sit in the empty half of the sink.

saveforthat · 16/02/2024 15:11

I have one of these. It's just for brushes and cloths because we put nearly everything in the dishwasher. I love it and don't mind the small drip tray, just wash it out now and then.

Oooooo I'm so excited to be able to contribute!
I have this giant thing and it brings me genuine (tragic) joy.
It's sturdy enough to put a cast iron casserole on the top rack, the drainage tray has a extendable spout to channel water to the draining board or sink and only needs an occasional rinse through to avoid getting yucky. The wineglass holder actually works and there is a knife block for sharps. Love love love it.

nopuppiesallowed · 16/02/2024 17:38

The over the sink metal ones that are hidden behind cupboard doors? They have these as standard in a lot of (foreign) holiday villas we've been to. And every single one has been rusty......
