Most exciting thread of the year. Ready.... Tell me about your washing up drainer thing!

I have metal washing-up drainage rack. It was quite expensive from Laura Ashley 😬
But its gone all rusty and looks like absolute shit (see images)

I'm not that keen on the Wham type of ones like this.
I'd rather get something a bit more stylish (if a washing-up drainer can be stylish).
But I don't really like these kind of two-tiered monstrosities. And they tend to be grey and black coloured which I hate.
And the sleek Joseph and Joseph ones have that horrible drip tray which turns my stomach.

I just can't bloody find what I'm looking for - a nice-looking one, not plastic, not black/grey, no drip tray with a cutlery part that cutlery can actually stand up in.

Please show me your washing-up drainers and give me some inspiration!

Try, delfine wear, stainless steel drainer, Amazon have them about £40 though, but are made extremely well, won't rust and should last a lifetime.
I got fed up of the replacing mine all the time so bit the bullet and bought one, it's still immaculate a year on.

I have this on order

So nobody else just piles up cutlery and crockery and hope for the best?

nopuppiesallowed · 16/02/2024 11:33

I have a dishwasher but also do washing by hand fairly frequently. I just wash the mugs first then lean plates against them to drain. I keep one mug aside to stand cutlery up in. I hate dish racks as they seem unhygienic as they seem to collect grot and or rust....

KStockHERO · 16/02/2024 11:49

A much better quality of responses 😂

Thank you so much for all these recommendations. I'll spend Saturday sorting through and decide on the one I go for.

As an aside though... £25, £60, £80 for a washing-up drainer? What fresh hell.

I was chatting with my mum about my washing-up woes and she said her drainer was £75p from a local hardware store in 1994. It's really nice - plastic but looks metal, off-white kind of colour. I might ask her if I can have it, early inheritance 😱

@Mumsanetta , I do. A lot of it seems to get rewashed a few times before it gets used or put away.

Ducksinthebath · 16/02/2024 12:08

Those Joseph Joseph drainers are the absolute worst. You only have to brush against them and all the bits start shifting around and the spout falls off. And the scum that forms in the spout thing is vile.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone have a good option for a situation where a Belfast sink is higher than the worktop around it? (see image). Is that even a Belfast sink? I'm not sure what the name is. But that's the situation I have so every drainer I try (including two different JJ models) just run back on themselves.

Edited

I know you can get the sort of belfast drainer with a lip but it's a shame your sink is so high. All I could suggest is maybe one with a lip perched on something like a thick breadboard to give it the right height. I can see why it irks you!

A nice, thick breadboard is a great idea. The current one is sitting on a rejected JJ tupperware box whose seal perished after a grand total of 2 washes. That works fairly well but it's not great looking, especially considering I just paid a fortune to open up the kitchen into the dining room and it's on show to all and sundry. A board would at least look more streamlined.

That stuff is so overrated and I need to stop buying it.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 16/02/2024 12:24

Got mine in Morrisons.

mrsm43s · 16/02/2024 12:24

I don't actually use a drainer as I have a dishwasher and wash very little by hand.

But if I did have one, I'd probably use a silicone collapsible one (plenty available on Amazon for not much money), and rinse it/dry it up, collapse it and put it away in a cupboard at the end of of drying the dishes. I wouldn't want a drainer on display however snazzy it looked.

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/02/2024 12:37

Actually ducks your worktop looks so nice I would be tempted to try and find a matching offcut to stand the drainer on. Sadly we're a use-any-old-perished-lid type of household but understand one must make an effort sometimes 😃

That's not my worktop, it's just an example. If only my kitchen was that swish!

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/02/2024 12:39

Well it WILL be swish once you get a breadboard!

TheFairyCaravan · 16/02/2024 12:43

I’ve got this one, but we only wash a couple of things. Most stuff goes in the dishwasher.

I've nothing to add, other than I am enjoying the banality of this thread 😂

SwishSwishBisch · 16/02/2024 12:55

I have this KitchenAid one, but it was nowhere near £60 when I bought it from Costco a couple of years ago!
That said, can’t fault it. No rust, easy to clean and the drip tray is sloped so it doesn’t collect gross water (and entirely optional if you don’t need it but I do as no draining board)

Also @Ducksinthebath i have a Belfast sink that rises above the worktop and my one solves that issue too!

I need this thread thanks OP
I wont tell you about mine it’s a disaster and impossible to clean

AnnPerkins · 16/02/2024 13:13

I have the JJ one and love it. I chose it because it wouldn't scratch the stainless steel draining board.

We don't have a dishwasher so it gets a lot of use. No problems with slime.

This post tells me we could never be friends IRL 😅😅

You see, I have a drainage rack because I can't be arsed to dry and put away all the crocks, cutlery, glasses, pans etc. I just leave it all to drain and air dry.

Like fuck am I going to dry and put away all my crocks, cutlery, glasses, pans etc. and then wash, dry and put away my drainage rack. Nope.
I see the drainage rack as core kitchen apparatus that doesn't need to be put away.

Plus, my drainage board would look naked as fuck without a rack of some description on it.
And collapsible anything just reminds me of camping which is hideous.

This probably falls into the two-tier-monstrosity category but I keep looking at these and thinking how much stuff I could get on it
MAJALiS Over The Sink Dish Drainer Drying Rack, 304 Stainless Steel 2 Tier Dish Racks for Kitchen Counter, Over The Shelf Kitchen Organizer, Adjustable Length (Sliver, 33.5-36 in) https://amzn.eu/d/gFA1Vr8

I'm a short arse though so probably couldn't reach without a step stool 😂. Following with interest though as our white coated metal (two tier) drainer has started getting rusty after about 7 years.
