I have metal washing-up drainage rack. It was quite expensive from Laura Ashley 😬
But its gone all rusty and looks like absolute shit (see images)

I'm not that keen on the Wham type of ones like this.
I'd rather get something a bit more stylish (if a washing-up drainer can be stylish).
But I don't really like these kind of two-tiered monstrosities. And they tend to be grey and black coloured which I hate.
And the sleek Joseph and Joseph ones have that horrible drip tray which turns my stomach.

I just can't bloody find what I'm looking for - a nice-looking one, not plastic, not black/grey, no drip tray with a cutlery part that cutlery can actually stand up in.

Please show me your washing-up drainers and give me some inspiration!

I've had metal draining racks and they go rusty.

I have a plastic covered metal rack....and it's going rusty! Bits of the plastic wear off and rust appears, sigh..

Does this mean I have to get a plastic one? They look so plasticky! I have a budget of £6 ish.

fatbottomgirl67 · 16/02/2024 18:06

I highly recommend a trip to homesence. They have a huge range and I spent a very jolly half an hour studying them all before making a decision. My daughter was bewildered that anyone would take so long to decide but its important to get it rightGrin

This one. Nothing exciting. It'll probably go rusty eventually but I refuse to get a plastic one and if I have to replace this in a few years then so be it.

BertieBotts · 16/02/2024 18:21

I think you need to scour supermarkets and discount shops to find the right kind of cheap one. Then either it will stubbornly last forever like your mum's one or you can replace it when it looks ratty.

CheersToMe · 16/02/2024 18:31

I'm bemused by all the terrible sinks. Ours is stainless steel 1 1/2 bowls with a proper draining board. We have a draining mat on it and a dishwasher that every thing goes into. No ugly bowl, no ugly drainer. Just get a proper sink!

Katypp · 16/02/2024 19:11

i have two dishwashers so I don't wash up much 😂but I have this for water bottles and my husband's fancy glass and this for pans etc, both of which I store under my sink

Doginthebed · 16/02/2024 19:44

This is an Aldi special next week . Does this help anyone?

Oooooo I'm so excited to be able to contribute!
I have this giant thing and it brings me genuine (tragic) joy.
It's sturdy enough to put a cast iron casserole on the top rack, the drainage tray has a extendable spout to channel water to the draining board or sink and only needs an occasional rinse through to avoid getting yucky. The wineglass holder actually works and there is a knife block for sharps. Love love love it.

Now I’m excited as I’ve been trying to find a replace for my ancient wooden one and this would enable me to wash even more bits by hand - I love the view from our kitchen window!

OooScotland · 16/02/2024 22:45

I wouldn’t have a drainer rack in the house. I just use a large, thick tea towel and replace it often, then wash them once a week with the other dishcloths and towels. It does the same job and there’s no messy, rusty thing sitting there. I do have a belfast sink and a dishwasher though which helps.

I don’t have a washing up bowl either but that’s another story!

FeliciteFaff · 17/02/2024 01:20

Going against the grain, I have no dish rack. Got rid of it, more than ten years ago. instead I wash /scrub down my draining board daily and allow bits to dry on it, they don’t stay there. Have a dozen kitchen towels to dry stuff off pronto and then they are put away. This way they don’t stay out to dry forever, they are also not an eyesore. I have a medium sized kitchen and live a minimalist lifestyle. Dish drainers are an eyesore to me and all the ones I’ve seen in peoples homes are dirty and cluttered. I love hav8n the draining board as an extra bit of workspace. I’m not rich so I don’t have miles of counters to work on. Even if I did I would do away with a drainer entirely. We use a dishwasher daily.

Loveperiod · 17/02/2024 07:23

I put mine in the dishwasher top rack once a week looks perfect

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/02/2024 08:22

I have one of these. It must be over 15 years old. No rust. I use a free standing container for cutlery.

I've tried to find a "nicer replacement" but am yet to find one I like better.

Fingeronthebutton · 17/02/2024 08:29

horrible drip tray that turns my stomach
And you put up a pic of your own drainer which looks disgusting 😩

Grumblebees · 16/02/2024 14:37

We were in Finland at Christmas and there was a wall cupboard over the sink with wire bottom & shelf that had all the cups and glasses in, so they could go straight in there after being washed up. Never seen it before but was handy as a tiny kitchen!

They had drying cupboard above the sink in a place we stayed at in Italy last year. Brilliant. Unfortunately I am blessed with a window above my sink so it's not an option but it is a great idea.

Callingallbutterflies · 17/02/2024 08:42

Tk maxx had a good selection last time I was there. We have the J & J one and I love it!

Mumof3dogs · 17/02/2024 08:49

I have this one from Debenhams and love it !
Looks good , lots of space and drains to sink

INeedNewShoes · 17/02/2024 10:55

I have a 2 tier rack very similar to this one from Argos. Not sure where mine came from as I was given it but this is pretty much identical.

It's so handy having two shelves plus the hooks at the end for cups/glasses/water bottles

TheBayLady · 17/02/2024 12:25

Try a bog standard plastic Addis one, loads of colours, cheap and hold loads. What is the point of style over substance?

Gwenhwyfar · 17/02/2024 12:34

Greensleevevssnotnose · 15/02/2024 22:09

I have a dishwasher so we don't have one. I. The past had a Woolworths one

I have a dishwasher, but still use mine. I take the dishes out of the dishwasher and put them on the drainer. It's not convenient to have things I use often hidden away in the cupboard. I suppose it doesn't look that tidy...

CornedBeef451 · 17/02/2024 12:54

I'd like to not have a drainer as they always rust or go manky. The kitchen designer recommended the Joseph Joseph one but I'm less keen after reading this thread!

I only use ours for a few things that get hand washed and then anything plastic from the dishwasher as it's always still dripping wet.

What does everyone do with wet Tupperware? Am I going to have to start hand drying it just to get it out if the way?

Newname000 · 17/02/2024 13:15

Mumsanetta · 16/02/2024 10:52

So nobody else just piles up cutlery and crockery and hope for the best?

I'm a big fan of piling it up and hoping for the best. Much to DP's consternation I refuse to have a drainer. It's just one more thing to keep clean. It really stresses him out watching me choosing where to balance things😁

Alwayslookonthebrightside1 · 17/02/2024 13:48

I am strangely enjoying this thread so much. My people!!!. Although if I spent £80 on a dish drainer my OH wouldn’t forgive me 😂

Alwayslookonthebrightside1 · 17/02/2024 13:50

Also don’t get me started on the limescale on the dish drainer issues, been banging on about a water softener for too long. Need to take action!
