Anyone else rocking the housework?

My housekeeping was always somewhat chaotic, and since these were launched, my house is far more functional and a podcast away from actually looking rather orderly, even at short notice.

I tend to pick what I need each day rather than following the tradtitonal TOMM, but do refer back to that to help get some jobs done if they're in danger of being neglected.

I think my most used tracks are the "Calm Laundry Put Away" the "Bitesize Bathroom Blitz" and the "Quick Kitchen Turnaround"

Ah my friend liked hers @LexieLoos except for the kitchen, which seemed to have been included as an afterthought!! I can see that a bedroom next to the living room might not be ideal though, if people want to stay up late watching TV/ talking etc.

We have a tiny house, two bedrooms + bathroom upstairs, living area + kitchen + general dumping room downstairs... we changed the original dining room into a toy room/ storage area for bigger items, but now the DTs are bigger they're going to need their own rooms soon and we'll have to turn it into a bedroom. No idea how to manage it though, whether they should have a bedroom each upstairs and we go downstairs, or one of them is downstairs instead. I'm not keen on either arrangement Confused

Went to Tesco last night and stocked up on cleaning products - also cleaned the disgustingly grubby kitchen windows - baby steps!

FourTeaFallOut · 04/09/2023 12:49

Did anyone make it through the 75 minute reset? I just tidied away stuff in the kitchen, moved to the living room, turned around and one of the kids had decided to make a cake and as I watched the flour spill over the worktops as they measured it out was enough to make me switch the whole thing off and admit defeat. It's like shovelling snow in a storm some days.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/09/2023 10:07

I've managed it (but my children are older which helps!) and it got the majority of the house looking civilised again.
It's one I'll come back to when things inevitably slip.

I'm on the last day of holidays with child 2 and have had a few mornings of getting child 1 up and into action so my productivity is up which was when I got the Reset done.

This morning I've done the washing up session which is good. We have a diswasher, but had built up an assortment of oddments that are awkward to fit in or don't wash well. I've independently given the sink area a thorough clean to follow up, so next time I tackle the kitchen it will look much better rather than functional mode.

I mean, two of my kids are teens and my youngest is nine, so I'm not in the trenches with it anymore - think I was just having those end of summer holidays moments.

Ds3 went back to school today and I managed to whip the house into shape. Got though the bedroom podcast and got all the bedding through the wash and back into the airer thanks to all the good weather.

I'm really enjoying the calm after dinner clean each night. I gets a bit same-sy but it means the rest of the evening runs much more smoothly.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/09/2023 21:46

Great work on the bedrooms!
They're my biggest sticking point. I liked the 75 min clean including them.

I hate changing bedding. I can handle the DC's single duvets, but wresting with our super-king is a bloody nightmare and if I wait for DH, it always turns into a bedtime job.

I only have a king to contend with and I find my wingspan lacking! I'd love to master that duvet origami where you just...roll the cover and the duvet together effortlessly? 🤷...but it is beyond me.

Is this the week the first week of Christmas Tomm kicks in? It feels too summery to think about right now.

LadyAmeliaSmallhope · 06/09/2023 11:09

I hate changing duvet covers too - can do the single ones but anything bigger is beyond me Confused

I'm not a big fan of the sun - much prefer autumn temperatures - but am making, er, laundry whilst the sun shines and getting everything outside on the line! I know Gemma is a big fan of washing pillows, I may bite the bullet and do those and the kids' duvets, everything else easily washable has been done now.

I've ordered the TOMM journal, my local library doesn't have a copy and it was cheaper to buy a secondhand copy than order it on Kindle (although I would have preferred Kindle and bringing more 'stuff' into the house does seem counter productive...!) - I love a journal, am quite looking forward to starting the Christmas countdown Blush

My DTs are 8 now and able to 'help' to some extent but when they were toddlers, I had no hope of the house being in any way tidy...

I end up draping it over the bannisters and doing lots of running up and down the stairs to arrange it. The height difference and gravity helps, but it's still not a slick operation!

I use a clip thingy to hold one corner of the duvet in place while I sort the other one. Bit like an extra hand

FourTeaFallOut · 08/09/2023 08:58

I now have clips winging their way to me from Amazon, thanks for the recommendation. Anything that takes some of the effort out of it is a bonus.

Oh, the journal sounds interesting. Honestly though, the organised time method just stressed me out. I got the book but it's just so counter to my personality to do that kind of deep scheduling. I think that's why I like the podcasts so much, you can just pick it up whenever the mood or demand strikes.

Dropthedonkey · 09/09/2023 14:34

Can you use TOMM and something like Dana White at the same time? I massively need decluttering help but also have the usual kitchens, bathrooms, beds needing done. I then end up frozen as I don't know what to start with!

BogRollBOGOF · 09/09/2023 21:52

I find the two very compatible. TOMM is focused on cleaning, tidying and the need to declutter, but doesn't focus much on the how to actually do it which Dana does cover.

My theme today is tidying and laundry!

I've already made a good dent triggered into action by a sock crisis. I have lots of clean clothes, they've just stockpiled in IKEA bags since coming back off holiday. Time to shift the backlog and have a few weeks keeping up 🤞

I'm going to do a cull in the playroom with the Christmas week 2 podcast. I'm going to push through the gorgeous weather outside and lean in to the festive vibe.

This is exactly mine too! And want to start the play room cull on Christmas week 2! Will see which ones to listen to? What do people actually call 'them' like podcasts/guided cleans?

FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2023 10:03

I don't know, I do stumble over it...podcast makes me feel old, guided clean sounds about right but maybe a bit long winded...maybe just session? I have no idea. 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 11/09/2023 11:31

Podcast is shorter 😂

I've used the Boxing Day 15 minute tidy this morning. There's some really good ones amongst the Christmas ones from last year. There's a hallway one I like in there too that's great when everything's been pulled out and dropped.

Everybody finds it odd, but I love cleaning. Since I've retired I've really enjoyed having time to do it properly. Yesterday I felt really energised and did all the hoovering and steam mopping the floors. I try to set a different job for each day but some days I just do what I feel like. Also I love doing laundry and have some ironing to do later. It's been so nice to have the lovely weather recently so I could hang washing outside every day.

I'm the opposite I hate it! I was diagnosed with adhd inattentive type last week and been using gemma brays rock the housework to keep on task ! I find it really helps and noticed in her comments and stuff a lot of adhd people use her systems too. I would love to be consistent enough to do the TOMM method but I'm just not so use her guided cleans to do the areas of house that are worse! Since the hoildays most of the house is at terrible state due to having disabled child and not really having any time for cleaning but now my girls r back I now am focusing on it and so grateful for the rock the housework to be able to do it! Talking about what um going to do and what I'll will have done in here is also helpful!

FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2023 12:17

I just like being jollied along 😁 I'm all about the positive praise 🤣

FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2023 12:18

If it came with a sicker chart I'd be a cleaning machine.

Dropthedonkey · 11/09/2023 22:54

So I've downloaded the organised mum book on my kindle. Just reading about level 1 cleans - supposed to only take 15 mins? But includes dishes and wiping down bathroom and putting a laundry load (that you presumably did earlier) away. That alone would take me 15 mins.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/09/2023 06:16

I think the laundry task is putting the machine on, rather than the meatier task of hanging out or putting away, so it just gets the ball rolling and builds a habit of a load a day.

I don't think there's any dishes in the 15 level-one clean. I've always found that a bit suspect, tbh.

Dropthedonkey · 12/09/2023 07:52

Level 1 jobs...
(some, eg keeping on top of dishes throughout the day, definitely easier if you are at home all day - though of course that would generate more mess!)
