Boring question - how often does your washing machine go on?

As a family of 4 (2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby, oh and a cat) our washing machine is on every day, and every so often, twice a day. I feel like this is too much. It's expensive, not environmentally friendly and constant work (I know that goes without saying with 2 dc).
Any tips?

There's just the 2 of us and I do about 4 full loads a week. 2x clothes, 1x bed sheets and 1x towels

crosstalk · 03/07/2022 16:54

2 of us. When DP is here, it's every other day. When it's just me, once a week. DP is a mucky pup and has too many clothes. Like others, I wear smart clothes and hang them up to air but when digging etc change into gardening clothes.

MintJulia · 03/07/2022 17:45

Three times a week for a household of one woman, one teen.

One whites, one coloureds and once for duvet cover & p/cases. normally on a Saturday morning, Line dried or on an airer in the garden.

blebbleb · 03/07/2022 17:50

2 adults and a toddler. Around 3 times a week. We don't rewear dirty stuff either.

DelurkingAJ · 03/07/2022 17:51

Two adults, two Primary school DC. About 5 loads a week. One of either bedding or towels, one white load, three loads of coloured stuff. DSs wear trousers and jumpers twice unless there’s a disaster, DH wears suits six days a week, so it’s just shirts and underwear for him (and sports stuff, fair amount of that for all three of them).

justabigdisco · 03/07/2022 17:54

Tips? Wash your stuff less often. Family of 4 here and mine is on probably 4-5 times a week.

Anjo2011 · 03/07/2022 17:59

I’d say 1 to 2 loads per day. Three today though as we had run out of white socks. We have two washing baskets , children and ours , I collected all the socks from each, washed and dried them 45 pairs! That’s why there weren’t any clean ones.

blebbleb · 03/07/2022 18:02

Do people really separate lights and dark colours? I've never done that!

658Doyouknowwheremysparkis · 03/07/2022 18:10

2 adults, 2 large breed elderly dogs. 10 kg washer, wash on hot and do 60 degrees in 48 mins and 90 degrees 1 hr 20, front loader.

I don’t separate lights from darks all our underwear is white/light and socks are all black ( it’s the law in this house)

per week
1 - dog basket bedding/ 3 baskets between their spoilt arses (x3 microfibre double duvets with duvet cover) cleaning cloths, mop heads used through the week … 90 degrees

2 - clothes … 60 degrees

1 - human bedding, 1 queen, 1 hospital bed … 60 degrees

1 towels and any accidents ( DH has life limiting illness and things get a bit ‘boil wash’) 90 degrees.

probably did 4 washes a week, when I had a household of creatures that leaked a lot less than they do now.

tapdancingmum · 03/07/2022 18:15

Mine is quite sporadic - no set times except on a Friday when I wash DH's work stuff separate from my work stuff as his job is dirty and smelly so I'm not washing the clothes together. DD spends most weekends at the boyfriends so will come home tonight with a couple of work tops to wash (she only has 3).

The rest of the week I will wash if I have time and stuff to wash 😀

Ponderingwindow · 03/07/2022 18:18

3 people. Average of twice a day.

part of that is that we use reusable products instead of paper towels and. Paper napkins, cleaning supplies and period supplies, etc. it generates more laundry, but cuts down on waste.

germsandcoffee · 03/07/2022 18:19

Family of 4 and at least twice a day

BooksAndHooks · 03/07/2022 18:20

Every day and sometimes two. Five of us all in adult sized clothes, lots of sports kits during the week, towels, bedding, pet bedding there’s no way we could do any less than we do.

I only wash bright whites separately. All other colours go in together unless it's something new like a bright green tshirt. I will wash that by itself once first incase the colour runs

restedbutexhausted · 03/07/2022 18:26

Single parent to 9MO. Lights once every 2 weeks, darks once every 2 weeks, baby once every 5 days (more if sheets wet, dirty bibs etc), bedding once a week and towels once a week. So, 4/5 depending on the week.

I hate how much electricity it uses. I've got a meter so I can literally see it eating money Sad but i've started washing everything on a lower temp to try to offset some of the cost.

Replacethis · 03/07/2022 18:35

6 or 7 times a week. Family of 5. Don't use the tumble drier anymore.

MiniMoosey · 03/07/2022 18:36

According to my husband “all fucking day.” Laundry is his job can you tell?

flutterbybabycakes · 03/07/2022 18:51

About three times a day. Cloths, darks, lights - one load a day. Then the drier same amount.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 03/07/2022 19:48

Pretty much everyday and if we miss a day, on others it will go on 2/3 times. We must do 10 loads a week I think.

I rarely wash at 60 degrees. 30 or 40. Do clothes not shrink at that temp?

dementedma · 03/07/2022 19:57

4 adults. About 5 loads a week. We rewear and reuse towels. Nobody died yet.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 03/07/2022 23:38

Family of 6 plus four dogs so their beds get washed often too so three times a day.

Never had a problem, my merino jumpers I hand wash

mizzo · 04/07/2022 06:07

At least once a day. 6 people, adult DC do their own mostly. We re wear as much as possible but there's a lot of sports kits, work and school uniforms that can't be reworn and I have two younger DC who love playing football so get changed out of school uniform and get another set of clothes filthy playing outside.

Sally2791 · 04/07/2022 06:15

2-4 of us in the the house, at least one load daily, weekends maybe 4/ day.
