Boring question - how often does your washing machine go on?

As a family of 4 (2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby, oh and a cat) our washing machine is on every day, and every so often, twice a day. I feel like this is too much. It's expensive, not environmentally friendly and constant work (I know that goes without saying with 2 dc).
Any tips?

Should have said, we're 2 adults, a 2 year old, 1 year old and 2 dogs, with baby 3 due in December

Babies and toddlers don’t just get themselves filthy but parents get filthy too when our clothes get covered in peanut butter, mud, and sick. So where we would have reworn clothes (in simpler times!) we now end up washing them as they aren’t clean. Toddler, baby, and two adults here. We do sheets, towels, whites, colours, and darks every week, and a wool wash every so often. This usually works out as 6-9 washes per week. Washing machine goes on most mornings, sometimes twice a day if I’ve skipped a day. Expensive, wasteful, and time consuming. But I don’t know how I’d reduce it to be honest!

@Terriblethirtytwos I'm totally with you there. I used to rewear clothes all the time but like you said, baby and toddlers cover you in all sorts throughout the day. I've gone to work in what I thought were clean clothes and have found a rogue bit of ready brek or yoghurt. 😂

Family of 5, at least once a day, occasionally twice a day.

urrrgh46 · 03/07/2022 14:49

Lots! Family of 11 and lots of pets! At least twice to 3 times a day.

urrrgh46 · 03/07/2022 14:50

We're moving soon and I'll get a long awaited 2nd washing machine and tumble dryer.

Bobbybobbins · 03/07/2022 14:56

Family of four including two disabled DS. Wash maybe 4 loads per week max.

Things I do to reduce: rewear trousers, jeans etc usually for a week, same for work trousers and skirts. Change towels and sheets once a fortnight unless really needed before.

Kids need clean uniform every day and DH gets dirty at work do their stuff has to be done.

Lazypuppy · 03/07/2022 14:58

Family of 3, goes of 4x a week
1 load of mine and DPs
1 load of DDs (4yo)
1 load of towels
1 load of bedding

Nidan2Sandan · 03/07/2022 14:59

Anywhere from 4-7 times a week. Family of 5, plus we all do sports so have extra kit to wash.

hoohaaar · 03/07/2022 15:00

2 x daily.

2 adults, 4 year old and 2 year old.

To keep up with my washing I probably need to put it on about 3 x daily!

Mol1628 · 03/07/2022 15:01

Family of four with one dog. Washing machine is on once a day 5 times a week

Neither of us have work uniforms and the children usually wear pjs after school so they don’t create much washing.

Tiredmum100 · 03/07/2022 15:03

2 adults and 2 dc. I do a load a day, on weekends more. I am a nurse so I need a clean uniform every day and work 5 days a week. Dc have a clean uniform everyday because they get dirty in school, always come home muddy etc, they both play rugby once a week and usually a game once a week (although not rugby season at the moment) so have kits and training clothes, swimming once a week, plus cubs and scouts uniforms. If I don't keep up woth it its a night mare trying to get it all dry.

Iced · 03/07/2022 15:05

ny20005 · 03/07/2022 15:07

At least once a day. Probably 9 times a week. Family of 5.

This.

TimBoothseyes · 03/07/2022 15:38

Just the 2 of us here....once a week.

TheSummerPalace · 03/07/2022 15:39

Two of us, with DD home one week in three:

  1. towels and tea towels
  2. bedclothes
  3. lights
  4. darks
  5. DD - very messy, so clean clothes every day
  6. In the summer, I wash all the feather pillows and heavy winter coats; and old clothes, cuddly toys, etc in the loft as we are slowly decluttering. They are going to the charity shop!
Threelionsandalioness · 03/07/2022 15:43

Threelionsandalioness · 03/07/2022 15:44

*five year old ....

Nsky62 · 03/07/2022 15:47

Just me and cat 3 loads

Bluepolkadots42 · 03/07/2022 15:49

Family of 4- 2 adults, 4yo and baby. 2-3 times a week. Try to keep it to 2 times. We have a 9kg capacity machine, don't separate whites/darks and just shove it all in together with a colour catcher sheet.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 03/07/2022 16:01

Just me and ddog. I do separate into whites, pants/socks/coloured towels, coloured stuff/stuff with white in. I tried to limit myself to 1 per week but it built up a bit too much but that’s what I try to aim for. I’m trying never to put wash on unless washer is full. Not just because it’s waiting to be washed. I have enough clothes etc to not need it usually. No tumble drier. Line dry/clothes horse on landing for me.🙂

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 03/07/2022 16:02

#coloured stuff, stuff with white in.

willithappen · 03/07/2022 16:03

Family of three and two dogs. Washing machine is on every other day. Always do a full load, wait until there's plenty stuff to do a full white load etc.

BuwchGochGota · 03/07/2022 16:06

Family of 5, 2 adults and 3 teens.

Washing machine goes on at least once a day, often twice. Sometimes more, eg at weekends when beds are changed.

Had improved slightly with eldest away at university but he's now back for the summer.
