Boring question - how often does your washing machine go on?

As a family of 4 (2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby, oh and a cat) our washing machine is on every day, and every so often, twice a day. I feel like this is too much. It's expensive, not environmentally friendly and constant work (I know that goes without saying with 2 dc).
Any tips?

3-4 loads a week. Family of 3.

2 adults. 1 in Year 1, so 6 yo. 1 in nursery and 2 yo. A dog.

washing machine goes on once a week.

3 clothes baskets in the 3 bedrooms and 1 basket in the guest room to collect random things.

massive washing machine. All goes in together on a Friday night and hung up on ceiling lines or outside on Saturday.

it’s been our routine for years now.

Wafflehouse · 04/07/2022 06:29

5 sometimes 6 times a week. 2 adults and two dcs. I separate lights and darks and do a towel wash if there’s a full load, if the dark load and towels don’t quite make a full load each they go in together. Bedding just goes in with whatever colour wash I’m doing.

I’ve switched to a shorter wash and lowered to 30 degrees, I use dettol laundry additive in every wash so never feel the need to do a hot wash. I do pull things straight back out of the basket if they’re ok and the dcs have just been too lazy to put them away, also spot treat things a lot more now whereas before a dirty sleeve cuff would’ve meant the top just went in with the rest of the load even if it was fine otherwise.

Single parent to 9MO. Lights once every 2 weeks, darks once every 2 weeks, baby once every 5 days (more if sheets wet, dirty bibs etc), bedding once a week and towels once a week. So, 4/5 depending on the week

you really. Shouldn't put the baby in the washing machine!!

WinterMusings · 04/07/2022 06:33

@WindmillsOfMyMind44 you need a word with your cat!! Tell it not to keep changing its outfit every 5 minutes. One catsuit per day is enough!!

Pootle40 · 04/07/2022 06:35

Family of 4 - kids are 7 and 12. Do about 4/5 loads a week.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 04/07/2022 06:38

Family of 4, DC under 7. I do a load a day, if not two. It's too much but the DC ge their clothes filthy, cover me with smears of peanut butter or whatever, dh sweats so I have to put all his clothes on special washes to get rid of the stink. Then towels, bedding, throws from the sofas etc.

Hothammock · 04/07/2022 06:38

Machine runs constantly all weekend. Probably about 10 or more cycles. And then about 3 or 4 during the week too. I don't understand how people do so few washes.
We have a DH who goes to the gym most days so that is a kit everyday. 2 Sporty kids so their gear every day. 1 bed wetting so sheets every single day. Plus 2 dogs so their bedding once a month. Then sheets once a month and towels on rotation.
My personal washing is one load a week.

Monacles · 04/07/2022 08:02

@DuarPorte
How big is your machine to fit all your clothes, towels, cloths, tea towels, bedding and random things like coats in one wash?

I need a bigger machine, mine is tiny, I have to do each persons bedding as a single load.

Theoldwoman · 04/07/2022 12:31

How on earth do you fit in clothes for 2, towels, bathmat, tea towels, sheets, pillowcases in 1 load?

Cotswoldmama · 04/07/2022 13:12

Family of 4 I use mine 4-5 times a week. Sometimes it's twice a day but overall not much for the week. I usually only wash my boys uniform once a week unless they're really dirty as they'll just get dirty anyway and they're too young to get sweaty. I'm similar with my clothing I wear things a few times before washing them unless I get them dirty.

UsernameIsCopied · 04/07/2022 13:20

Family of 5, I do one load every second day.
When I read about washing machines that are on 2 or 3 times a day I wonder how full they are?
Mine has a Capacity of 7kg and it is always on full. Really full.
I only wash stuff that is visibly dirty, smelly or when it's been in use too long (eg towels after 1 week, hand towels after a couple of days, bedding once in a fortnight) and I separate by colours. So for example bedding will go on at 40 degrees together with other coloured clothes.
We all wear some items of clothing more than once of they're still clean (socks and underwear get worn only once).
I do a 90 degree cycle on empty once a month to keep the machine clean.

AdoraBell · 04/07/2022 13:20

Much less now that DDs are in University. Towels and underwear about every 10/14 days. Lights once a week, darks the same except gym gear. I currently only have 1 pair of yoga pants and go 3 times most weeks so a quick cold wash 3 times. I’ll buy more yoga pants next time I’m in town- outlet centre is much cheaper than anything I can find online.

DD2 used to decide at 10/11 pm that she needed X from her floor for the next day and put a wash on then use the tumble dryer 🤦‍♀️ No amount of asking/explanation/telling her made a difference.

dudsville · 04/07/2022 13:22

7 to 8 times a week spread out once every two or three days, so wash, dry, wash dry, etc.

JiminyGlick · 04/07/2022 13:23

4 plus dog.

Washing machine is on at least once a day, ditto the dryer.

TheVillageElder · 04/07/2022 19:28

@WindmillsOfMyMind44
Are your loads full loads?

BertieBotts · 04/07/2022 20:19

ReeseWitherfork · 03/07/2022 14:39

I relate to this post the most. I have no laundry schedule. When the basket is full, I do a load of each type one after another (eco setting, takes all day).

See, I use the eco setting if I don't expect to take the washing out as soon as it finishes, because I don't care how long it takes. If I want to do multiple loads I press time saver on the basic cycle until it goes down to what it thinks is 1:10. It lies, it's about an hour and a half. But coincidentally the tumble dryer thinks it's going to take 2:40 and also takes about an hour and a half. So it works well for daisy chaning several loads all day, then I spend the next day folding them all and putting them in piles never to be put away

BertieBotts · 04/07/2022 20:20

My baby loves the washing machine. Sticks his head in and sings loudly 😂

Blankscreen · 04/07/2022 20:25

The washing it doing my head in.

I would say twice a day during the week and then 2 or 3 times a day at the weekend.

There are 5 of us. Each having 2 changes of clothes a day.

I am very very very fed up

Blankscreen · 04/07/2022 20:27

Ours is a 9kilo machine and we do big loads

Frazzled2207 · 04/07/2022 20:28

4 of us- about 6 times a week.

LadyMacnet · 04/07/2022 20:28

We average 4 or 5 loads a week, mostly done between Thurs - Monday. We have a sporty teen. DH is a teacher so he and the teen get through 10 shirts a week:

1 load of whites - mainly school and work shirts, white sports socks
1 load of towels
1 load of bedding
1 or 2 loads of everything else
