Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

I would be very interested in any recipes. Keep looking in the cupboards and mentally planning how many days until we all starve.

I am already getting better at no waste and making things stretch though. Made us chicken pies yesterday which fed 6 of us with only 3 tiny chicken thighs. Had to make the pastry as well as had none in. DH went to throw away the last of the cucumber but I told him not to as put with another few bits and bobs it will be a bit extra for lunch tomorrow. Turned the DC sandwiches into clown faces for lunch today and this meant they didn't realise they actually only had half a sandwich each. Have also left The leftovers from DS4 lunch because I know for a fact he'll be asking for something later so he can go back to that instead of having something else and wasting half.

Am now off to see if it's possible to make cheesecake from most of a tub of creme fraiche which I have leftover from the pies.

Sizeablecontours · 21/03/2020 13:17

I saw the other day that Good Housekeeping has some ideas for store cupboard recipes here.

We3kings you sound very handy with family catering and making things stretch Star. Dh is very in to this - he has created a wall chart with ingreds and dishes we can create from them.

We are also focusing on no waste and being a bit stricter about dd eating what she is given no complaints! I'm even starting to be conscious about how much loo roll we are using which I have never done before. Overall (as long as everyone has enough to eat of course) waste consciousness has got to be a good thing, and hopefully a lasting change.

Willow I'm with your dc in that I couldn't stand PE at school - was almost phobic about it - but dd loves it. Her class even have to fill in a form at the end of each week with their timings on it for PE teacher.

Good point about drying weather. I must prepare to move laundry ops outside shortly!

I love Marguerite Patten btw. I have her basic soup and jam books. They are both excellent, no nonsense, with recipes that work.

Chic I am also anticipating "only doing lessons they like best" being a problem here. I am worried that dd is going to procrastinate over the subjects she loathes and get in to an awful pickle with them. We used to do Just Dance a lot but we haven't kept up with it.

Sorry your "d"p is being such a wet blanket in terms of family support Zoo. Sad It's good he has his own accommodation sorted though. Choc and banana muffins sound great! (I need to look up egg-free recipes as there is a shortage here currently.)

I agree about there being something very positive and hopeful around green shoots! I've cut a large jug full of forsythia and put it in the sitting room which is cheery among the mess.

I hope Lil Zoo feels better soon!

I'm signing off the computer now until tomorrow.

Wishing everyone a very good afternoon!
Take care one and all! Flowers

Have to say I haven't thought much about timetables etc yet... I work all day Monday so I won't be able to do much with the kids then anyway Confused I've been trying to mentally come up with ideas of what we can do and love the idea of the 9am pe lesson zoo must remember to give that a go... someone please remind me lol?!

So far today has been very much up and down. Down is that the dc have argued a lot , I've shouted a lot and I've got a headache now, up is they've done some crafting so we now have lovely Easter bunting up in living room (bit early but I don't care!) , we read The Twits until ds got scared Grin and my orchid has buds on it and I thought I'd killed it!

Dd currently dressed all in white so she can pretend to be a rabbit...her theory is that hopefully the Easter bunny will see her and want to make friends so she can then prove to me he is real 😂

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 15:07

Aww, foxes, that is so cute! 😍

foxessocks · 21/03/2020 16:47

I thought it was pretty cute too - made me smile Smile (the state of her white outfit when she came in from the garden didn't make me smile!)

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 21/03/2020 17:01

The thought of my dd in an all white outfit is a scary one!

LaneBoy · 21/03/2020 17:31

Hi all. Nowhere near caught up. Been sleeping on and off all day on the sofa along with DS, nothing is helping the pain (me) or the cough (him) so I’m feeling somewhat miserable and worried.

Anyone got tips for earache that doesn’t involve doing a Van Gogh?

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 21/03/2020 17:37

A heat pack on the affected ear may help lane. That's what I usually do for my lot and along with paracetamol it seems to help

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 21/03/2020 18:06

Agree on heat pack! Id take cocodomal if you can and its really bad

LaneBoy · 21/03/2020 18:08

Yep have been trying hot flannels, hot water bottles, even tried ice 😭 nothing is working 😰

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 18:53

Any tonsil pain / swelling, Lane? DD and I have both had earache that was referred from a quinsy throat and needed a GP. DD ended up in hospital on a drip and intravenous ABs, I got away with heavy duty antibiotic tablets and enough cocodamol to make me talk total rubbish. Sorry.

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 19:26

Oh no Lane you poor thing 💐

HungryHazelEyes · 21/03/2020 22:02

Hello all! Been busy in our household. My birthday was Thursday so went out for sushi for dinner, stopped at Costco since we were close, no toilet paper. Last night we went to play laser tag (they hadn't shut down yet and we pretty much had the place to ourselves). That was for DDs birthday and we all had so much fun, we'll have to go back another time.

Today we spent the day trying to find things we need, still no toilet paper! We have 1 roll left, plus a 6 pack given to us by ILS, although DH really doesn't want to use that of he can help it - he's so picky!

Tonight we have ILS over to celebrate birthdays, FIL is bringing his ribs which I'm very excited about. DH and DD are going to do asparagus, potatoes and corn on the cob. I'm going to attempt to make German chocolate cake keto friendly. Have plenty of alcohol in the house too for tonight.

We're still at work, although my 2nd job has shut down for 2 weeks, paid though so that will help. We're constantly wiping things down, although DC are slacking on their chores and bin didn't get taken out this week Angry

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 23:04

Happy birthday Hungryhazeleyes. A friend turned 49 the other day and I was teasing him about being a year old. He grinned and said it was better than the alternative!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 23:35

Happy birthday Hazel! Hope you have a lovely day.

A belated "happy birthday" Hazel! Cake

Oh no, I'm so sorry you and ds are ill Lane; serious ear ache is really relly horrible Flowers. I hope you and ds manage to get some sleep tonight. The only home remedy I know is a wodge of cotton wool dipped in carefully warmed olive oil (be careful not to burn yourself!) stuffed in offending ear, which can be comforting.

That's lovely about your dd and wanting to be spotted by the Easter bunny Foxes Grin hope your headache has eased Flowers

Waves to all fledglings!

We've agreed as a family - during this partial lockdown - to step away from screens on Sunday to focus on other things, so I'm going to go awol from the thread tomorrow and I'll see you all back on here on Monday morning.

Hope you all have a lovely (if unusual) Mother's day with your families (and that you are spoiled a bit Smile ) and I hope that those of you who can't visit your own mothers in person, can contact them via Skype or similar Flowers!

Have a lovely Sunday everyone!

hazel happy birthday
We3 I've started thinly slicing apples/pears to share.theyve not noticed yet it's not a whole one as looks more
SC dd1 and I said just that about foodwaste.ive couple very bendy carrots that I think may upgrade into a vegan muffin mix...dd1 says doggo eats her less than crispy onesGrin

Foxes that's super cute but I can honestly say white shirts and when younger socks were my limit on white clothes.we have odd t shirt predominantly white...

Brilliant afternoon here.i had hot shower followed by colouring with D's whilst lil zoo had one(then she join colouring whilst dd2 had one) then we sat watch Mrs doubtfire dvd and laughed and quoted our favourite bits.
Zoolets had red pesto pasta with peas and cauli and last muffins.i wasn't overly generous with pesto to make go further, veg all from freezer and smaller bowls hid fact try eke out pasta.no complaints

Been awake an hour

HungryHazelEyes · 22/03/2020 05:38

lane I hope you feel better soon.

zoo it's amazing how much we can stretch out without the rest of the family knowing!

Thank you for the birthday wishes, it really didn't feel like anything special, other than I didn't have to cook. I doubt tomorrow (mother's day) will be anything special either since it's not mother's day here. No one bothered to try to make my favourite cake (keto friendly) either, but I knew that would be the case, as I'm the baker of the family.

I did get a new phone today, but so did DH, that was my birthday present. Sorry I'm feeling a little down about it all right now, but don't feel like I can talk about it to anyone else.

KTCluck · 22/03/2020 07:15

Happy Belated Birthday Hazel Flowers. Feel free to rant away here, sorry you’re feeling a bit down.

Hope some sleep has helped you and DS Lane

Pleased to hear I’m not the only one hurtling toward chaos Willow and SC. After a promising start DD’s bed took faaaar longer than we anticipated- DH was determined he didn’t need help but I’m actually better at following instructions and he had to cave in Grin. I got the room all cleaned and old bed in storage, but by the time everything was assembled and we’d been fed only half her toys got put back. So upstairs has officially reached chaos status.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone. May it be a day of quiet, well behaved, DC, minimal chores and some time to ourselves box of chocs wouldn’t go amiss either

KTCluck · 22/03/2020 07:21

Oh and forgot to say - DD’s promise of sleeping in her own bed all night... she was completely hyper about her new bed and lasted a total of 15 minutes HmmGrin

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 08:31

How are you this morning Lane?

Ds is rarely coughing this morning. We think it was just asthma but we are carrying on as if it's not.

I have four eggs that need to be used by 24 March and over ripe bananas. I think that means banana bread.

Have dusted off my soda bread recipe. We have lemon juice and plenty of milk so we will have bread.

We have plenty of spuds to use up so dinner will be potato based for sure!

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 22/03/2020 08:41

Good morning all and happy mothers day Flowers

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 22/03/2020 09:14

Happy Mothering Sunday! 💐 and 🧁 and ☕ for everyone in the TKCC and 🍷 later.

Hazel, rant away. It's hard when one is the person who makes birthdays special, to realise that others don't think to do it for you. It is quite alright to feel sad and cross about that. Sending unmumsnetty (((hugs))).

SC, good plan to stay off the IT today, and thanks for the lovely TKCC links - all the things I love best! I have a "crafts for little folk" book that was my grandmother's when she was a trainee Infants' teacher in 1929. There are some lovely paper flowers in there that I think I shall make this afternoon.

Lane, hope you and DS are feeling better, and Lisette, hope your DS is on an upswing too.

KT, did you get any sleep at all? You have to understand that new beds are just so exciting 😉. Foxes, has the Easter Bunny made contact with your DD yet?

Based on Asthma UK's advice, DH is starting his preventative puffer this morning and we are both starting antihistamines to weed out any pollen response that might be complicating things.

I officially Have The Day Off domestic things today, although we are still ploughing through DS1's washing. 🤢🌊. The sheet with a boy-shaped mark on it was particularly grim. Thinking of washing once at 30 for stain removal, then boiling everything just to be sure!

🙋 to That, Chic, zoo, stressy, cineraria, ED, apologies to anyone I've missed!
