Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Thanks for links SC. If it makes you feel better That I have been meaning to print / organise timetables since Monday and have still not done it Grin. Not sure why really... maybe it makes it more real?

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 21/03/2020 07:40

We are using a timetable but that's because I work better with a routine as do the DC. They actually went to check it this morning to see what they were doing until I reminded it's the weekend so no school work today 😂

I'm with you on the essays that. College are frantically trying to sort distance learning and they keep bombarding me with things and I honestly haven't looked at any of it. The prospect of trying to sort my education while also trying to educate 3 DC from home and going so work (when I'm eventually allowed back) is just too much right now. I will try my best. I need distinctions to get my uni place although I have seen some universities lowering their offers because of the current situation so we'll see. I was also sitting my maths GCSE and obviously that's not now going to happen. Teacher is still sending us work but god knows how we will be graded.

I'm getting very minimal flying done but now it's the weekend and we don't need to do school work I'm hoping to catch up a bit.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 21/03/2020 07:40

I really should probably do it

Dc1 said he would just follow school timetable so thats possibly him sorted at least

Dc3 and 4 have both hand a bit of a lie in so hopefully moods will be better than yesterday!

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 21/03/2020 07:43

I hope you get your gcse we3 have you done mocks? I have seen those will be used to calculate gcses for school aged students, hopefully will apply to you too!

I am open uni so distance learning anyway but stressful as have now reached the point where the last 4 pieces of work cannot have an extension and they are all worth more % towards final marks

Sizeablecontours · 21/03/2020 07:45

Morning all! I have to admit that I spent a large part of yesterday faddlearsing Grin Blush Grin!

Hats off to all of you home educating/entertaining lots of dc at home! It must be a very tough job, and it's amazing to read how you are all rising to the challenge brilliantly! (I feel rather ashamed how easy my life is in comparison tbh!)

Very brief messages this morning as dh is downstairs (he is very much a morning person!) waiting for me to start on something ... (he has two modes ... full on or asleep .......Grin ... )

Willow yes, we are also confronting "when I get a moment" tasks! No excuse now [tragically Grin Grin]! Fantastic list yesterday Star and well done to your ds3 with his Harry Potter reading; I hope he can find something else to entertain him that's just as good! I bet you are glad to have ds1 safely cocooned and back with you, complete with blue hair! Smile

I agree you have done brilliantly with even getting part of your essay in That - really good going in fact. Could you talk to your tutors about forthcoming essays? Home edding four dc with a baby does not leave time for much else. I am sure they would be understanding in these exceptional times. Fingers crossed your frozen food arrives!

What are virtual children's parties Toostressy? Good luck with dd1
bedroom sorting today! And with creating a realistic timetable.

Lisette hope you are all ok?

Oooh your garden sounds so lovely Cineraria! It must be such a challenge keeping our dc educated and entertained while your dh is working from home. And I agree, the contrast between panic on the news, and slowly working through cleaning tasks at home, is surreal in the extreme.

Thanks for choc chip cookies Zoo (delicious Grin!!) and so sorry to hear about your dd1. I hope she and her partner are ok. Glad doggo is enjoying their confinement!

Hope your weekend is very relaxing and calm KTCluck

Hope your dss are ok Bower. Well done on sorting BRC Star

Chic so glad your dd thrilled at school closing and not too upset. My dd is veering between the two atm!

Sorry your work is being so difficult We3kings, that all sounds really difficult Brew

Waves to Hazel Lane Honu Foxes and anyone else I have missed! Remember to look after yourselves as well as your dc, and hope you can all have a bit of family fun today [if humanly possible and you are not screaming at the walls!).

OP posts:
Sizeablecontours · 21/03/2020 07:50

your dc, not our dc Cineraria!

Meant to say Zoo take it very slow and steady and don't forget to look after yourself too Brew If your dp is out working, is there any way he could bring some food items back home with him? (I know the form isn't great though).

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 08:10

Well upstairs reports that ds is better this morning. We don't know if it's asthma or the other thing - dh was sufficiently worried so he woke me to tell me as he was up with him in the early hours. At that point we separated into upstairs and downstairs. Dh reminded me that I ate chillis yesterday Blush that might explain our symptoms. Ds doesn't have a fever but did feel achey. We've food in and so we'll self isolate.

I'll catch up with thread now.

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 08:12

That's not to say that I'd be out for food if we had none. We've great neighbours who'd help.

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 08:32

Husband thinks it was an asthma attack now. No fever ever, no coughing this morning. Inhaler stopped the coughing last night. We'll continue to be separate and see how he goes. Husband was panic-struck last night.

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 08:36

'achey' was a single leg cramp apparently. When I asked ds last night I meant achey all over Hmm

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 21/03/2020 08:50

Sounds positive lisette!

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 09:20

I'm mortified!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 09:31

That, you don't need a detailed timetable. The hourly ones online are all very well, but I think they just cause stress. It's going to take a while to shake down into this. Sorry the baby is unsettled.

Lisette, Stressy, everyone else self-isolating, hope you are not going mad and can get what you need.

Lisette, don't be mortified - we are all so very much on edge that anything respiratory is causing panic! And DC don't get the need to linguistic precision at this point. You asked him if he ached, he ached.

That, We3 hope you can keep your qualifications and income going and some clarity on both arrives soon.

Zoo, hope DD1 is better soon. Remember to rest yourself!

🍒🙋 to everyone else!

Today's To Dos
☑️ Wash DS1's stuff he brought home and get it put away
☑️ Subsume DS1's food stocks into ours
☑️ Rejig menu plan to add one vegetarian 🤦. This may be a flex too far!
☑️ Usual flying stuff
☑️ Change our bed and rotate mattress.

KTCluck · 21/03/2020 09:37

Fingers crossed he’s ok Lisette.

What a stressful time for you both with academic stuff That and We3. Hope it all works out for you both as you have worked so hard juggling DC, essays, work and home.

Glad you’ve got all your DC home Willow. Hope they are all managing to live together in harmony.

I also feel a bit ashamed of my easy life SC. Work, one child who is still going to nursery as normal, and a DH who mostly pulls his weight. Hats off to you all contending with kids at home.

Is anyone else losing motivation house-wise? Mine is teetering in the edge of chaos and half of me is happy to let it drop while the other half is desperately trying to cling on to it!

Was close to embracing a lazy pyjama day today but when DH pointed out it was only just after 8am instead of the 11 it felt (early start thanks to DD) I decided to keep to usual routine and get the saturday home bleurgh done, then we can have a lazy day tomorrow.

Ta da:
✅ breakfast dishes
✅ benches wiped
✅ downstairs dusting
✅ handles, switches, remotes wiped down
✅ downstairs tidied properly
✅ downstairs loo wiped thoroughly including floor round about.
✅ LOL
✅ dining table and chairs wiped down
✅ DD has painted Mother’s Day cards.

Feel much better for it!

To do:

  • hoover and mop floors downstairs
  • put paint stuff away
  • tidy upstairs
  • take down DD’s toddler bed, thorough hoover and dust, rearrange furniture, build bed, put bits away in new bed storage (there are shelves and a cupboard in the headboard as well as drawers underneath - genius!)

Let’s hope DD sleeps in it all night as she’s promised Grin

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 10:17

Well he still has a cough so we're definitely taking it seriously. I'm isolating downstairs. What's next week's zone? Main bedroom? In which case is be off the hook!

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2020 10:18

I'll be I meant.

Sizeablecontours · 21/03/2020 10:40

Oh I'm so glad you said that KTCluck! My house is teetering on brink of chaos too and motivation is low! Well done for resisting the call of PJs & duvet! Star. Hope your dd enjoys her new bed!

Dh and I are in middle of bit of a garden project ATM (coffee break) and it's much nicer being outside this morning in the sun than inside choring.. Only managed X2 15 mins in boudoir yesterday. Really will need to get cracking with housework next week. Mindful that we need to keep up cleaning for extra hygiene reasons obviously, and in case one/all of us gets ill.

Last week was like herding cats. So dh and I had a bit of a talk this morning as a result of which, Dh has volunteered to the majority of the cooking (which is no small thing) and I'll keep emptying DW, doing kitchen bin and sink and surfaces etc). And dd says she will mop, so I may delegate floor washing/hoovering/stairs to her, and I'll do all other sorting/ cleaning/tidying/decluttering/washing except for usual family bed-making at weekends.

Need to make a bit of a timetable for myself though and sort with dh when I am working and when I am not as I have no idea currently and I hate that lack of clarity. Dh and I have decided we will wake up at 6.48 weekdays, 7.30 weekends, we have to be up for dogs anyway, and as long as I get dressed to shoes straightaway, I should be able to keep going ok. I know others on here don't find it helpful, but I find Flylady's shoe diktat really really helpful! It also helps that it's bright outside so I will be able to see what I am doing when cleaning for a change! Being inside so much feels harder though after such a long and dark winter!

Really happy to hear it is not as serious as you thought Lisette! Arf at single leg cramp - all DC go through that stage at some point I think! Grin

Good luck with menu re-jigging Willow

Brew That

Forgot to say, dd's sports master has sent through 6-day a week exercise and conditioning routine so she is out on a run ATM to complete "first" day's tasks.

OP posts:
Stilllivinginazoo · 21/03/2020 12:05

Joe wicks on you tube doing pe lessons 9am weekdays for half hour for kids all ages

Anyone needing 5minutes could try that?

SC erm.no chance.ive all but given up as he's now saying money is his biggest worry.he can roll in all money ever printed by himself for all I care.my worries are for health and safety of family and friends
I think he's intending hoover up all avail overtime and he's moving to a dive flat next weekend with shared kitchen and bathroom and given his form for lazy cleaning I'd rather he kept away as on top being in social care he going to be a walking target for it,but his attitude us still very flippant as he's not taking slightest interest in news as it all "overhyped" apparentlyHmm

That seen great FB post says mum working from home.pans out and 4kids lying on floor mouths taped and arms and legs tape together...made me think of you when said about trying to manage home learning, house, kids schooling and life
I hope manchilds not adding to your stress ,you manage get out for a bit, food arrives in full and you all stay well!

Lisette fingers X it's "just" asthma

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 12:13

Blimey, SC, that sports master would get short shrift in this house! Both DD and DS3 are of the opinion that no school definitely means NO PE! 😂

House is gradually unravelling, like at KT's end. The hallway is full of DS1's kit, but he's gone back to bed! DS3 is sad that he can't have a subway for lunch.

It is, at least, a lovely drying day here. I shall try to focus on that!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 21/03/2020 12:15

Ooh, zoo, wartime recipes, good call! I have a book of Marguerite Patten recipes (with no bloody index, so you have to look through the whole thing Angry ) that I will also share if that helps!

ChicCroissant · 21/03/2020 12:31

DD is planning to do Just Dance for PE Grin although I hear that the PE department are going to send some ideas out. Her school have provided a basic timetable and suggest that we stick to the school one to make sure all subjects are attempted and not just the subjects they like best! Next week will be interesting when DD is working and DH is as well, but from the week after DH may have to take holidays. Waiting for clarification though.

Not done much today so far, cooked breakfast and that's about it. Sun is out so I should get some laundry on the line! Apart from the lack of the usual activity, we are keeping things as normal here.
