Fledglings are awesome in August - the Flylady thread

Welcome to the August Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

This is the August thread so I am reliably informed that it is usually more of a general chat thread. Links won’t be posted by an official ‘thread leader’ every day but I will leave some links in this OP. Please do familiarise yourself with the Flylady website, especially if you are new. The Flylady is (understandably) keen that people do look at the website.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

*
A daily summary (which should update automatically every day) is available on the Flylady website at flight plan here.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Happy flying everyone.

Nightshade is a pita ive I deal with that one here.

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/08/2018 20:55

Yes Cucumber Yes they do

foxessocks · 02/08/2018 21:00

I had to Google nightshade Blushso I've learnt something this evening!

Cucumber that sounds very unfair Sad

Went to the gp about my strange period sorry for TMI and her advice was 1) wait for smear test results (it was done 7 weeks ago and I could have to wait another 3 for results Shock) , 2) see if it happens again next cycle and 3) if I don't get a "proper" period in next week take a pregnancy test Shock

So I have no answers and am now completely and utterly freaked out wondering what is wrong with me / am I pregnant (would be a bit of a shock to say the least)

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/08/2018 21:02

I couldn't handle the people. I went and sat on a hill. The people are happy though so that is good. bad hostess = me atm

Scoopofchaff · 02/08/2018 22:07

Foxes sorry you have to wait so long for answers Flowers

I had to Google nightshade veg too - knew pots were involved - but hadn't realised it included tomatoes. That must be so tricky for you all to handle.

You sound like me when I've had visitor overload Hills. Start craving time alone.

Cucumber I'm afraid I'm responsible for horse talk (recently bought dhorse as mother/daughter share after about five/six years of searching! ). Honky's dgds have a beautiful horse too and Bowerbird used to be involved with showing ponies (have I got that right Bower?) so a lot of horse talk going on!

Sorry your DH forgot about your birthday drinks and left you with all the childcare; you must be seething really disappointed Flowers Gin Cake. Hope you manage to salvage something from the night!

Good luck with unpacking Cag! Your strategic approach sounds good; definitely better to have something to unpack in to! Agree with Cucumber about taking it slowly/ one area at a time.

Wing flaps to everyone else!

I didn't get much done after previous list as it suddenly got a lot hotter and I slumped rather. Bit pathetic really! Had some one-on-one time with DD soaping a saddle. Then picked blackberries. Watered young apple trees. Served supper and cleared up! Hopeless!

I am truly dreading the heat rising again tomorrow and this weekend. Not coping with it at all well.

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/08/2018 22:12

Problem is that i am sooo burnt out by the building work, decorating and post building work cleaning that I was totally done with people before they even arrived and I have barely seen them Blush

Scoopofchaff · 02/08/2018 22:35

Yeah, I totally get that Hills endless building work (and strangers working in the house all day) is totally knackering, as is all the prep and even worse, the clearing up afterwards Flowers

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/08/2018 00:11

ta da
make bread
2 loads of washing
a trip to the supermarket for some food shopping

Is it bedtime yet?

IVEgotthePOWER · 03/08/2018 07:08

Fortunatley our nightshade allergy causes no breathing difficulties or anything more serious just eczma. So it could be worse and isnt the end of the world if a bit gets through.
Our milk intollerant dc will also suffer eczma flare up, stomach pains and diarrhea so not pleasent but again not the end of the world.
I am grateful we dont have any serious allergies!

foxessocks · 03/08/2018 07:25

I feel for anyone dealing with allergies, must be stressful .

Ds slept through the night again! In fact both dc still asleep. That's two nights in a row and two nights last week. Is he actually improving?!

IVEgotthePOWER · 03/08/2018 07:30

Fingers crossed foxes!

Ds3 up since 630. Everyone else still asleep. This is very GOOD for dd. She was really tired yesterday so hopefully has a nice lie in and wakes up in a good mood.

Ta da

Washing hung up
Washing in dryer
Ds3 up fed and changed

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/08/2018 07:51

Not now you have said that foxes rule 1 of parenting never say something might be improving, children are sneaky buggers who like to prove you wrong...Wink

ta da
more bread made
washing on line
washing in machine
bread taken out of freezer for the hoards for breakfast
treat rules laid out for ds on a piece of paper to prevent arguments later
foam pads hung outside to get rid of the residual smell so that the garden cushions can be made up this weekend
looked for the lost will to function, but it has completely disappeared and there is no hope for finding it until sensible (10hr) nights sleep and some proper rest has happened.

Right now to get up and head out the door to work. Have a good day people!

sorry I am a bit flakey at responding at the moment

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/08/2018 07:55

Maize and oils are the 2 allergies that cause breathing issues the rest are digestive, pain, hives or immune system suppression issues. Thankfully ds is very good at checking labels. He has been trained that unless HE reads the labels he doesn't eat. That is because it is very easy to miss things when you read labels when shopping. As was demonstrated here last night when 3 of the things he was told were ok for him weren't when he and I checked the labels. Goodness knows how many times I have missed things so we have a check when buying, check again before use system. Which is good due to sneaky ingrediant changes that companies like to make... Hmm

Bowerbird5 · 03/08/2018 08:36

Morning.
Catching up with posts.
Another one with allergies. Me: dairy, bees & wasps, random things at random times. Have had to go to hospital several times, resus once, for severe reaction swelling of body parts and face. Only go when it is face as it is usually in mouth andthat gets tricky if tongue involved. I have asthma so occasionally need oxygen. Apparently it is more to do with my immune system than actual allergies so now have an emergency pack of anti histamine and steroids so I don't have to go to hospital unless they don't work. So far so good. I also have a very bad allergy to a rare tree! Reaction came up with a minute when tested. They hadn't had anyone react to that before😳
I can have very small amounts of dairy without problems but if I have say cheese on toast I am ill all next day. I really miss cheese.

Yes, another pony girl. Had a pony at 14 loved them since 18 mths old. Had another for my kids for 22 years she was 30 when she died. I also worked with horses at various stages of my life including a year on a large stud where I did show ponies and break in youngsters. Rode out the stallions and a couple of thoroughbreds in training for racing. Still have two saddles and bridle and lung cavesson and whip somewhere. Hoarder.
Lazing in bed as DD has gone to boyfriends and he is taking her to work. I think they are missing each other. They have lived together since she was 18. Now 27. I was worried at first but he is lovely and cares a great deal for her.

To do
Think I need to tackle pile of RC on the table.
Reorganise dining room and give a good vacuum actually if I have carpet cleaner I might try washing carpet in there.

Garden: prune dead bits of Rose and rejig chicken fence. To stop her going AWOL again. Pick more black currants if dry. May make more jam. Give some to pub to make cheesecake.

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/08/2018 08:42

bower you need to put a little spy camera on her so you can see what she gets up to when she goes awol

Scoopofchaff · 03/08/2018 09:10

That's an impressive horsey CV Bower! And hat's so lovely about your children's long-lived pony companion. She must be greatly missed!

Interesting about allergies and immune system issues. I developed mahoosive wasp and bee allergy in my forties and since then have developed lots of digestive issues/food intolerances. Never occurred to me they might be linked!

Blazing sun from 7 am onwards this morning! We hadn't planned to ride today because of temps so dhorse having a day off loafing about field with his companions in the shade of several large trees.

DH and DD off to buy some tack and I am ready to tackle house (slowly) because it is already heating up rapidly!

Pointy stick may be needed later!

Cagliostro · 03/08/2018 09:59

It's going to be an unproductive day here I feel. I had a few sleepless hours even when Cagletini went back to sleep (still got a good 5hr stretch though) and DH ended up working till 2am rather than 10pm. Looking after DD's friend (was our neighbor) but they entertain themselves, we sent them off to the park.

DH can't find his phone either which is a problem as the internet is much more usable on his than mine... We need to order ikea and Amazon stuff and ironically sign up for a new internet contract!

CassandraLamontaigne · 03/08/2018 12:06

Just dropping in to say hi.
I'm very unmotivated, I don't even need a poke, I'm not bothered about cleaning today Grin

My DM is coming to stay on Sunday and I'm hosting the local breastfeeding group on Tues so that'll inspire me (I hope)

Gee, so many allergies, it sounds like a real pain to work around them.
bower are you equally sensitive to goat and sheep's cheese as to cow's cheese? I'm not recommending at all, I have no clue, it just is a question that popped into my head.

I'm reading your tada lists, well done everyone cucumber hurray on getting the utility cleaned Star

What time do you all get up at? Or are you just all super cleaners?!

foxessocks · 03/08/2018 12:21

I think the heat is to blame but the dc are getting to me today!!!

Good news of sorts my period arrived properly so not pregnancy related. Just got to wait for other test results now.

I need to get ds to settle down for his nap as he's shouting, get dd settled in front of some TV for a bit , have a cup of tea and do a list for the rest of the day. Seems simple but I can't seem to move off the sofa.

Ta da
Washing out
Dishwasher on
Packed up the stuff for charity shop in the right bags and picked out a few brand new bed sheets, blankets to go with it from the pile to go.
Took the dc to a music group

Back with to dos when I have my Brew

foxessocks · 03/08/2018 12:34

Right, in this order (pretty much)

To do
Update online food shop
Hang second lot washing up
Empty and reload dishwasher
Make soup ready for dinner (yes I'm mad making soup in this heat but unfortunately it was on my meal plan as soup is so cheap so now I do have to stick to it!). Figured I'll try and make it while ds asleep to make it a bit easier.
Collect all the glasses from upstairs
More decluttering - contact local RSPCA to see if they want old cushions, towels etc, then I need to check garage for any stray coats, toys etc. Will leave attic for when dh around and feeling better as he is a bit off colour at the moment. So might move onto paperwork. Which is a big task.
Take stuff to the charity shop, they prefer donations at the end of the day so I'm going to leave it until dh gets home so I don't have to take the dc
Nip to supermarket while out

Cagliostro · 03/08/2018 13:57

DH has mowed the lawn for the first time (literally - first time we've had a lawn and mower in our entire 16 years together) and put a wash on. I made myself a little potato salad for lunch. That is the extent of our productivity.

foxessocks · 03/08/2018 16:26

cag mowing the lawn in this heat deserves a medal!!

Ta da
Took stuff to charity shop
Went to supermarket
Half made soup
Dishwasher emptied
More washing on/ washing hung up

To do
Whatever else I can be bothered to do at the moment I'm just sitting on the sofa feel exhausted now!

At the very least I need to finish making the soup!

How did you make your potato salad cag? I was going to make one with burgers the other night but I didn't get time. Love potato salad.

Cineraria · 03/08/2018 16:27

Wow, so many allergies here. I did wonder if DS1 might have a nightshade allergy as he had a really scary reaction to aubergine both inside and around his mouth and gets a bad skin reaction from tomatoes but the allergy clinic results just came up with strong allergy to aubergine but not to tomato. They said just to Vaseline him when we serve tomatoes. I guess we are lucky to miss that one.

That must have been a great moment, Cagliostro. I hope you are all enjoying the new lawn. You certainly picked a good summer to get one. MiL got tears in her eyes when she saw DH mowing the lawn for the first time because it meant to her that her son was all grown up. He was a bit offended though as he was 44 at the time and had held down quite a responsible job for a number of years!

Today I'm hiding from Fly Lady as it's day two of the Baby Steps and she wants me to wear lace up shoes. I don't have any and, other than the basic white PE plimsolls and obligatory hockey boots at school, have never had any. I'd be more likely to trip over than achieve anything in lace ups. I have been particularly diligent about wearing my house flip flops though and my sink still looks nice!

I also read up on the August habit, which is laundry and thought I might play truant on that too as I enjoy having a laundry day and getting it all done. The instructions seem to assume that everything will be tumble dried and get packed away immediately we don't have a tumble drier, so doing a load each day would leave us with hanging clothes all the time but then I remembered that I do nappy and bib washes on alternate evenings and hang overnight to dry them out then away in the morning, so I'm hoping that counts and she won't come and smite me with a feather duster or something.

In addition to my baby steps, I'm also going to:
sweep and mop downstairs
surface clean our very dusty bathroom
try to make our teflon tablecloth look respectable. It's a rubbish one; everything sticks to or stains it because it is made of a textured cloth, so it currently has plasticine, paint and all kinds of spicy and tomatoey food stains. If that doesn't work, I might just give the toddler his paints and no paper and see if it looks better or worse covered in one of his masterpieces (brown because he likes mixing colours more than actually painting).

I did have success with getting the children to tidy up the toys by telling DS1 that we'd go to the park with the paddling pool when the sitting room was tidy and placing DS2 by some farm toys and a plastic tub that they belong in. His interest in putting things in things took a worse turn at lunch time when he decided that a half chewed and much drooled on piece of rice cake belonged in my mouth (it was his, not mine) and he needed to scream at me until I would cooperate.
