Fledglings are awesome in August - the Flylady thread

Welcome to the August Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

This is the August thread so I am reliably informed that it is usually more of a general chat thread. Links won’t be posted by an official ‘thread leader’ every day but I will leave some links in this OP. Please do familiarise yourself with the Flylady website, especially if you are new. The Flylady is (understandably) keen that people do look at the website.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

*
A daily summary (which should update automatically every day) is available on the Flylady website at flight plan here.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

August’s habit is laundry

Happy flying everyone.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2018 08:39

Not tried Swedish glance.lil zoo likes Aldi raspberry sorbet too

Bower love hearing about veg ready in your garden, reminds me being a little girl(many moons ago) and my dad having half the garden alive with food this time of year and getting quizzed over gaps in rows of radish and carrots and why my trousers had mud on them where I'd wiped dirt off and avoid them straight from the ground

Blackcurrant jam and scones sounds divine comboSmile

"D"p on his way.. popping farm foods for fish and mince this morning.proper food shop after hospital as we know then what lil zoo will be allowed to eat

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2018 08:39

Tesco shop arrived. Not got much of a plan in mind but I do know I can defrost some bolognese tomorrow - I have to do the gym run as DH had to swap shift and cooking pasta will be my limit after. Still achy today so will try and rest.

I'd like to maybe unpack a bit more though. Friend is gratefully accepting empty boxes so the more I can sort out before people come on Thursday the better!

Bowerbird5 · 14/08/2018 10:09

Called supermarket to rearrange food delivery as they cancelled my delivery last night
Meal plan done for next week
Online food shop done for next week
Both of the above will probably end up changing!

To do
Make dc lunch and get ds down for nap
Hoover upstairs
Go to bank later once got car back
Decluttering
Dishwasher
Get some washing on

foxessocks · 14/08/2018 12:53

Just started a thread asking about cooking on a budget but I'll ask you all too as I know lots of you are great cooks. As most of you know I love cooking and baking (and meal planning!!) but I'm getting stressed with it this week because I want to try some nice recipes but my budget just won't stretch to it!!

foxessocks · 14/08/2018 12:54

For example what's better value frozen veg or fresh and dried herbs or fresh?! And doesn't compromise too much on taste?

MsForestier · 14/08/2018 13:36

I think frozen has more vitamins preserved. Aside from cost, I'm trying to cut down on my portions (weight gain and naturally greedy)and cut down on food waste. Very make do and mend Foxes - turns it into a challenge. During wartime it was such a worry to make sure your family were fed. I'm trying to channel that a bit to be less wasteful. (Without resorting to turnip surprise)

IVEgotthePOWER · 14/08/2018 14:10

Food is sooo expensive foxes

I am going to try and keep track of what i spend this week. So far on about £27.

We dont meal plan. We should do though. We also need to get into all having the same evening meal as currently OH and i eat seperately to the DC. But then i need easy meals 4 nights a week once back at work. Hmmm.

Cagliostro · 14/08/2018 14:18

I just can't do meal planning. I am beyond shit at it.

I need a plan for September when the clubs start again. Pain levels are stacking up again and I need to make the evening meals as easy as possible. The Caglets won't eat much batch cooked stuff though other than pasta stuff. But doing big cook offs of that would still help of course.

Also decided to go ahead with the melatonin break. Need to get it out the way before we are trying to get on with 'schoolwork'. She is anxious ATM and it feels like the meds aren't working anyway. So may as well just get it done. So two weeks of being stricter about things like evening TV time and sugar too which we have been lax about. Gulp.

foxessocks · 14/08/2018 15:37

Good luck cag hope it goes ok getting back into routine is always tricky anyway.

I have finished decluttering our paperwork!!! We have three organised box files, one small folder for dd school papers, one letter rack for incoming stuff to be sorted and the kids two red books in a drawer. Done!

Now what's next on my decluttering list?!

Bowerbird5 · 14/08/2018 17:30

Great work foxes.
I 've been de cluttering too. I have done a pile of Random Crap and then I have also managed four bags of school stuff. I have also reorganised three files of RE and chucked out all but one copy each. I find that difficult because it is wasteful but I have done it this year and will put it into recycling.

Ta da
S&S bathroom
Declutter dining room table.
Sorted jigsaws going to take 4 to charity shop, 2 for church, 2 for hospice
Sort BRCS
3RE files
Tired now.
Going to have a nap DH is already in the land of nod. He made a screen to stop chicken escaping.
Then tidy up sitting room and mend two skirts because I found the elastic. Then make scones. We had a late lunch so I didn't do them earlier.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2018 17:48

foxes frozen veg isn't quite as flavourful, but no waste so I can live with that.i roast broccoli florets from frozen and tastes good!!mixture peppers, squash, carrot, sweet potato and handful peas with stick and heap TSP ground cumin makes super cheap soup that zoolets love(sub out sweet potato extra carrot, parsnip or swede if you have fresh very that looking tired)

Pimp that porridge!Grinfavourites here are with grated pear, allspice and top chop hazelnuts.banana, little tahini and mix spice.blueberry, vanilla and flaked almonds(berries also frozen) don't forget canned peaches-cheap at Aldi!

Herbs-soft leaves are best fresh(basil, mint) but depends on recipe.i prefer dry oregano (rub between fingers to release pungency)and rosemary(pestle and mortar to a powder if "sticks" are issue in anyone's food!!)I do use dry mint and basil if push comes to shove.never buy ready made seasonings(think taco,morrocan....Google is your friend and subs can sometimes work
Frozen fish is big here-3bags for £10 at farm foods.if they have it I get haddock, cod and salmon.we but frozen mince too and pad it out with fine chop mushrooms or lentils(in fact very fine chop mushrooms can be sub for mince full stop)

I bake more vegan cakes when moneys short or flapjacks type things with value oats

Anything else specific you want ideas for?I have found price foods rocketing, and I've heard wheats failing as been so hot and dry grains are small and ripened already so bread, pasta etc will shot up.ditto veg in failed harvests...

Ever made pea pesto?frozen peas cooked, garlic, basil and mint(dry if necessary)blitz and serve mix pasta and top with cheese.a zoolet favourite and with value pasta and peas rediculously economical.usually served with cherry tomatoes

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2018 17:51

Hospital was good.xray of her abdomen, consultant ringing me tom with results of that and meds change(expected increase laxatives and keep anti spasmodics).introduce couple slices bread a day ready cealiac test in 6weeks.slowly reintroduce normal diet, except for fruit as berries are lower fructose and that can be a tricky bugger for sensitive guts.review 3months.
She said may be we never get a solution but can rule out serious illness so it could be just managing her pain but it may be there's a way forward we haven't seen and kids often grow out of gut issues.i feel better for what's happening and like she said if no serious issues at least we will know

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2018 17:52

FFS stock in the soup-a the veg are frozen.im tired, been a long day!!

HillsBesideTheSea · 14/08/2018 18:14

ta da
work
feel like need a new job already
take the bastarding antibiotics probably responsible for above feeling
make note to find out specifically some info from the boss which should help with above feeling

Considering what I am going to do this evening. More bastarding antibiotics, still got a the bastarding headache and concentration of a flea, still not happy with life in general, still lacking the motivation to do anything productive to solve it.

I prefer dried herbs - can't kill those, can't go mouldy.
Frozen veg are ok, they are veg. don't like veg

Yep yep to increased food prices due to weather. I am expecting massive hikes in prices for meat as well as grain. There are a number of countries where they are culling animals out of kindness because they can't feed them due to drought. Also have fond memories of allotment veg (particularly peas straight out of the pod) and thinking I was sneaking them. Grin I am thinking that I might start a few pots of container veg on my windowsil. but i need to finish decluttering for that to happen atm

I have stock in the freezer that needs something doing with it. Would be easier if someone had not mixed up the marrow bone stone with the cauliflower stock Hmm Which reminds me I need to batch cook at some point.

Damn my to do list. Never sodding shrinks.

can you tell today has gone to hell in a handbasket?

Bowerbird5 · 14/08/2018 19:16

Having a freezer is a bonus.
We don't have one since we lost it in the -20C plus winter temperatures here. You can't be covered by insurance for -15 plus. It gets that temp. Regularly here. I would like another but we will need to buy through catering company. I have asked local pub but met a wall there, don't know why.
If you live near supermarket you can work out when they mark stuff down. I would buy bargains regularly from there. local produce often cheaper. Check veg stalls near end of the day for bargains, markets too.
Vegetarian meals can be cheaper. Lentils fill out. Autumn/winter I used to feed mine soup first as it is cheaper and fills them up so less main course needed. Alternative a couple of times a week small main and pudding. Local free apples( froze some stewed) for crumble, pie, with rhubarb, currants. Eve's pudding, Queen's pudding, Chocolate Puddle.

I'm thinking I might buy some bread flour. Our farmers got most of the wheat in, they were working through the night to beat the weather. Stopping around midnight with the odd one still going. I know because they did wake me a few times. Flashing lights and two at a time and my windows wide open but I dont mind because there is such pressure for them to get it in. I have heard rumours that some have had to feed a bit of winter feed already but we have had quite a bit of rain and the fields are greening up well now.
DH has been to M&S and got some marked down steaks. We haven't had steak for quite a while. He is cooking it and I am looking after the cat( on here) and sorting magazines( I have some on my knee) then I have a large pile of ironing. Sick of sorting now. Didn't get as much done as I hoped. It takes bloody ages to sort school paper work. I worked till 4:15 then slacked off a bit but still sorting on and off.

Cagliostro · 14/08/2018 19:36

Bower i may quiz you at some point about your RE stuff please, we are going to start that in sept. Got some lovely textbooks with activities in (they are by a company called badger books) but any other ideas would be appreciated. Weve never really studied religion other than discussion with friends etc

foxessocks · 14/08/2018 20:04

zoo I knew you'd have loads of wisdom on this topic!! Thank you!! Do you use chickpeas and beans, lentils etc ? Someone suggested buying them in bulk and cooking them at home rather than getting the pre cooked tins.
