Fledglings are awesome in August - the Flylady thread

Welcome to the August Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

This is the August thread so I am reliably informed that it is usually more of a general chat thread. Links won’t be posted by an official ‘thread leader’ every day but I will leave some links in this OP. Please do familiarise yourself with the Flylady website, especially if you are new. The Flylady is (understandably) keen that people do look at the website.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

A daily summary (which should update automatically every day) is available on the Flylady website at flight plan here.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Cassandra cilit bang can remove tiles so be careful. my exsil lifted floor tiles with the stuff. For showers to get rid of black and yuck - mix a paste from bicarb of soda and bleach, apply to areas needing tackling leave for 2 hours ish or 5 if you forget it-- and rinse off. you will be surprised at the results.

Scoopofchaff · 05/08/2018 04:17

Well we are having a relaxing night in the peaceful countryside Confused

DD screamed and jumped out of bed because what she thought was a huge spider ran across her duvet.

I leapt out of bed in response, only to see a huge fat slug making its way across the floor, and screamed (more quietly!) in turn (I HATE slugs) which dh disposed of.

Then we were all just going back to sleep again (DD having decamped to sofa) when a fox set off the security lights and the furry started barking!! Grin. Which in turn set off the roosting pheasants. Which in turn set off the field of cows opposite.

We are all wide awake now! Grin

Cagliostro · 05/08/2018 07:05

It's like the noise version of a food chain. Or a children's picture book. :o

Annoyed at lack of sleep here.

I got most of the sealant in our old bathroom good as new by soaking cotton wool in bleach and leaving it on overnight. Will try bicarb trick here though (there's a few black spots)

foxessocks · 05/08/2018 08:13

I've tried soaking black bits in bleach before but never tried mixed with bicarb. I'd read about s product called astonish mould remover recently which is £1 or something in b&m bargains so was going to try that. But may as well try the bicarb first and save the £1 for now!

Sc did any of you get any more sleep after all that!? Ds did a poo at 5am but luckily we did get back to sleep afterwards!

Scoopofchaff · 05/08/2018 08:29

Come to think of it Cag it was a bit like an audio version of Farmer Duck (one of dd's old favourites). All it needs is an evil farmer saying "how goes the work?". Grin Grin

Anyway, I am certainly disabused of the notion that the countryside is quiet!

Sleep disturbances aside, feeling chipper today because there is a distinct chill in the air which means, like Farmer Duck himself, I can finally put in some serious graft!

Cassandra when we first moved in to wreck2, there was a hideous black hardened lump of gunk behind the tap in the sink of the (very) rudimentary kitchen, as though the previous occupant hadn't wiped behind the tap properly for 20 yrs (yeurgh). The bottom of the lav was also stained brown (yargh). As I can't use bleach here (septic tank) I tackled both problem areas with a paste of industrial clear vinegar (which is 60 cents a bottle here) and a large tube of bicarbonate of soda (a couple of Euros). Left the paste on for a couple of hours at a time and then rinsed off. Had to rinse and repeat a couple of times but it did the trick marvellously!

Scoopofchaff · 05/08/2018 08:31

X posts Foxes yes we did fortunately thank you! Glad you did too! Smile

BuffyBee · 05/08/2018 08:32

And what a night for you sc with spiders, slugs, fox, furry barking, pheasants squawking and cows mooing! It sounds like "Old MacDonald's Farm"! 😂
Have been up pretty early myself and have been sat reading a new book and drinking lots of tea!
A bit cooler here today so I'm going to get the jobs done that I've been letting slide because of the heat.

HonkyWonkWoman · 05/08/2018 12:42

Sounds like a good plan Hills.
I've caught up with some jobs and I'm now going to join you in a lazy relaxing Sunday! Ahhhhhh! 😂

foxessocks · 05/08/2018 13:55

I know zoo I honestly don't know what I was thinking when I meal planned this week Grin. Tonight was better actually we planned to have fishcakes and green beans but I've made it even easier and asked dh to pick up some fish fingers! We've got friends coming over now so won't have time to make the fishcakes from scratch.

Ta da
Wet Vax and hoover living room
Washing on
Dishwasher emptied
Swish and swipe downstairs loo
Wrapped up birthday present and took dc to party
Sent dh to shop for few bits needed

To do
Put wet Vax away as I have a feeling it may stay in the centre of our living room for weeks if I don't make the effort soon!

Might attempt some more paper decluttering later. Or we might end up in the pub

Cagliostro · 05/08/2018 14:03

We had a pretty decent Sunday morning. Got a fair bit of general tidying and cleaning done.

I am sure the novelty will wear off (especially as DD is a preteen) but the Caglets really are doing brilliantly at helping. I wrote a list and they happily got on with doing bits off it and ticking it off.

Although DS seems a little too into the ticking compared to the actual jobs :o I need to get him trained up a bit more, problem is being younger AND clumsier (like tripping over thin air type clumsy) it's hard to delegate as much to him. But I'm also very conscious of not creating a "girls do more housework than boys" divide IYSWIM, because DS happens to be the younger one and DD is getting more enthusiastic. Something to think about anyway!

Can anyone recommend a decent kitchen bin? Also how does one clean a gas hob, I can remove the burners but can you use sprays on them for a quick clean? I am so clueless!

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/08/2018 14:28

We use a damp cloth with Mr muscle kitchen on if gas hob gets super greasy cag
(We have to proper clean at end of shift taking off rings)
DS here like fart in a trance and you end up walking him thru EVERYTHING. I can't decide just plain not wired in or has it down to fine art in hope we find quicker do ourselves a lot of the time on schooldays when time is short bear with it i say and try equal them out, perhaps set DD harder tasks so number of to do is the same?a tough call

Fish fingers.hmmm.not had a fish finger sarny/wrap in ages foxes have none in and I want one now!!

Fed zoolets
Half wash dry so taken off airers
I really should iron it all later, but will see how hot it gets
Last load for today's just ready to come out and go onto airer by window(sun streaming in to help dry it,usually have curtains closed in D's room to keep it cool but he opt wear g shirt and vest play in there yesterday and was sticky in heat but oblivious so don't think he minds his room warming a little more!!)

To do
Dinner-rice salad for DS n lil zoo(chop cucumber, herbs, peppers, green beans and grated carrots and beets top just cooked boiled eggs and sprinkle chop cashews)
Me and dd2- roast beets, carrots, squash and spicy chickpeas (served just warm)on bed spinach and iceberg and some chop cashews
Lemon sorbet to follow.yum yum

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/08/2018 14:29

That should've added at community cafe cag
My phone seems to be editing not just changing words today😒

Bowerbird5 · 05/08/2018 14:39

Goodness p10 already

Took DD to work
Nipped to co op.
Went to Mass. Had coffee and chat.
Made lunch. Baguettes with salami and salad.
Going out to art exhibition.

Very little flying today😀 Washing machine man comes tomorrow and man to measure summer house. Must chose colours tonight.😀

Scoopofchaff · 05/08/2018 19:11

[Shudders uncontrollably at thought of slug climbing up face.]
Zoo I would be permanently traumatised after that. Your supper sounds delicious btw!

Absolutely cream crackered here tonight. Young lad who helps with heavy labour didn't turn up as arranged (sigh), so I rejected Flying for outside work again. DH and I have taken it in turns with strimmer all day on and off and it barely looks as if we have done anything! There is SO much still today! Everything will insist on growing Grin Bit demoralising though! Added to which, DD was no help at all, in fact was positively obstructive and stroppy. DH has patience of saint but I do not. I think I am failing very badly with her somehow as she is coming across as rather entitled/ungrateful ATM when she is bloomin' fortunate frankly. I would have killed for the opportunities she has when I was her age. Time to get her signed up for some volunteering I think.

Anyway. Anyway. Dh has to go back to town to work tomorrow in the office so I may suggest she goes along to help with photocopying or something.

Ta da:
I strimmed. I strummed. I strummed again.

What's the surface of the gas hob Cag? Mine's stainless steel so I wipe with sponge and a bit of washing up liquid first (most effective when still warm from cooking), then clear vinegar, then dry, then buff up with a tiny dab of cooking oil! No smears! Works a treat!

When I am feeling efficient (not often!) all the rings and metal etc go in dishwasher too but sink of warm soapy water just as good. Normally they they just get wiped over with a cloth.

If non-scratchable surface, something like enamel, then CIf is good.

Off to cook a vat of pasta now for supper!

Somewhat creaky wing flaps to all!

Cagliostro · 05/08/2018 19:12

Cheers zoo

Nice afternoon with some friends popping in to see the place! Knackered now though, I've barely socialized since moving and that sort of thing takes a toll. Plus the baby is very demanding ATM, not clingy but needs constant attention to stop her diving off the sofa or eating things or unpacking boxes etc etc

Cagliostro · 05/08/2018 19:16

Thanks sc I think it's enamel, it is like shiny black paint. The removable bit is very heavy. They're sitting in the sink ATM! I am loving Method products so would love to spray something but not sure if it's wise round the actual rings? I do have that cif cream cleaner (although won't be restocking that as it's left annoying residue on my sink when I've tried shining it!)

foxessocks · 05/08/2018 20:26

I use a kitchen spray round the gas rings cag seems to be fine! Same as sc I put the metal bits in the dishwasher from time to time.

Bowerbird5 · 05/08/2018 22:41

Enjoyed art exhibition and had cup of tea afterwards and cake. DH had scone and gingerbread.I had gingerbread.Mmmm.

Picked DD up and had a cup of tea in the garden. I have two pots of lilies out and whenever you go through arch or just sit near you get a waft of sweet scent.

Sc that was a lovely description of you evening. I could just picture it.

It was a not so lovely description of the slug. I feed them to 🐔
