Flying high in July (or trying to!) - the FlyLady thread

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 30/06/2018 09:14

A warm (or cooling with our current weather) welcome to the July Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links. On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

The first day of the month is Sunday. Since it’s a weekend there is no official mission or zone work, unless you want to of course.

*
Here is the daily summary for Sunday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I assume we are going into zone 1 next week which is the entrance area. However this week we have been in the living room. The Flylady website can take a few days to update the zones when the month changes so I will have a good look at it tomorrow and Monday to see where we are.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5/ zone 1.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

Once I figure out July’s habit I will let you know what it is!

Happy flying everyone.

I'd wash Honkywonk as even a tiny spot of undetected food on an item of clothing can attract moths.

But personally, anything I wear two or three times in a row (like trousers or a cardigan - usually "outside clothes" worn for a couple of hrs at a time - as wear a uniform of yoga pants and t shirts indoors) stays in a kind of "in limbo" in boudoir draped chair or end of bed, which doesn't help tidiness.

Your df is right of course, but dry-cleaned articles are often not worn close to skin.

Scoopofchaff · 02/07/2018 13:08

Congrats I've they are lucky to have recruited a true expert!! Grin

Scoopofchaff · 02/07/2018 13:09

I've had to come indoors for a bit. It's blistering out there atm.

HonkyWonkWoman · 02/07/2018 13:09

Well done with the Tesco Uniform Trial Ive!
I know, I would wash anything I'd worn all day, it's the other stuff.
What do you do with the worn hoodies and jumpers?
Do they get put away with clean? Iyswim!

Scoopofchaff · 02/07/2018 13:12

Some ideas here Honky

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 13:20

I hang hoodies on the back of the bedroom door or i may have a cardigan or jumper on the pram handle or in the hall. I do try to only have one or two items on the go and tbh i have a toddler so they dont last long until they meet snot!

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 13:21

Shame i couldnt get a £20 voucher for all 3 school aged dc 😁 still will come in handy. Dc1 is awful on clothes.

Honu · 02/07/2018 13:26

The Limbo Clothes.
I can't remember where I read this but it works for me.

I have a hanger which has DS2's jacket with all his swimming and athletics badges sewn on - a sentimental item as DS2 now 30 years past all this!
This separates the bulk of totally clean clothes from the Limbo Clothes, now on hangers, which formerly graced the chairdrobe. It also makes a sentimental item into a useful item, which irrationally pleases me.

HonkyWonkWoman · 02/07/2018 13:27

This is the dilemma! I'm in "house uniform" now but am going food Shopping so will change.

When I return, I will probably put "hu" on again.
I drape worn clothes on Chair of Doom/my Dd would wash/my Df would put away.
Times this by full week and you see the problem!
I will wash everything on the Chair weekly but that doesn't help the tidyness at all.

Perhaps I'll follow Dd and wash even if worn for half an hour, at least will be able to put away then.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 13:30

Hmm i dont have a house uniform i think that is where we differ!

CassandraLamontaigne · 02/07/2018 13:30

Can I join in?
I've changed my username from a name I didn't really like to what I wish I was called in real life. Though I don't think Cassandra Lamontaigne is the kind of person who has to clean her own house Grin

So far today I've cleaned half the fridge

My list is
Clean the other half of the fridge
Unpack suitcases from weekend away
Wash laundry
Hang out laundry
Take in laundry
Put away (yes, you've guessed it!) laundry
Hoover house

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 13:31

Welcome cassandra How are we pronouncing your surname ...

HonkyWonkWoman · 02/07/2018 13:33

That's an idea Honu!!!!!
To put them away but seperated!
Your Ds2 jacket brought tear to my eye!
I'm going to read that thread sc Thankyou!

CassandraLamontaigne · 02/07/2018 14:42

Thanks Ive
I pronounce it lah mon tay-n

Could be wrong though now that I think about it! Blush

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 02/07/2018 16:25

Welcome Cassandra. Love the username Smile.

Brilliant thread link SC. Re. once worn clothes... I leave DH to it with his. He sometimes ends up with a floordrobe but usually it is just a few items folded up which is ok. For the DC they are too mucky to wear clothes more than once. If they have changed multiple times in the day then realistically I wash what is worn as they don’t tend to wear it the next day and it piles up otherwise. I wear clothes once in the summer and for two days in a row in winter. Tbh I don’t have that many clothes and would rather look the same two days running than have a stupid amount of laundry. Hoodies, cardigans etc can be hung with coats if they are going to be worn again. I don’t put worn clothes back into the wardrobe. Once I am dressed for the day that is it with the exception of work (I have a uniform), exercise or if I am going out or need to look smart etc.

Also love the limbo clothes idea Honu.

Good news on the Tesco uniform Ive.

How do people think my leather converse will fair in the washing machine....

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 02/07/2018 17:36

Hmmmm do you have a short / delicate / shoe type cycle on it?

OP posts:
Scoopofchaff · 02/07/2018 18:09

I've if you Google "can you wash Converse?" all sorts of different opinions/methods pop up. Some recommend gentle machine wash, some by hand only. (I had a look 'cos dd's will need "renovating" soon.)

stegosauruslady · 02/07/2018 18:20

Lots of ta daas from me today...

Daily mission
Hoovered and tidied hall
Dishes
Swished and swiped
Cleaned kitchen
Did a giant food shop
Meals planned
B&Q errand done
Laundry load done and put away
Made DDs do a quick room tidy and put away their laundry

DP works 4 on, 4 off so hasn't been about for my new Flylady routine until today... Apparently it did his head in. So tempted to throw in the towel.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 18:25

Hmmm i have washed my normal converse lots. My white ones get the vanish treatment often! Its the leather thats making me wonder!
I have a hand wash setting so may try that

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/07/2018 18:26

Leather is NOT for washing machines. Perish the thought.

Steggy - tell him to get a grip and if it works for you to stop his moaning.

Scoopofchaff · 02/07/2018 18:31

Oh sorry I'm a numpty completely missed the point that they were leather!! Blush

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 02/07/2018 18:39

Damn Sad

Cagliostro · 02/07/2018 19:09

I would definitely not put worn clothes back in the cupboard. No way. You’d never know it to look at my horrifically messy house, but I do have some major issues with certain germ/hygiene related things and this is one of them.

But I am very interested in working out a system for this in the new house. Currently everything is what can only be described as “strewn”. In fact I read a lovely descriptive phrase in a novel (ignoring the fact it was describing the post coital bedroom) “an archipelago of discarded clothes”. Ahem. But I was thinking maybe people could have hooks on their doors or something to hang things on. Having said that the Caglets barely rewear anything apart from jumpers/hoodies in winter, as they are super messy and it’s just not worth the faff of working out whether something is ok for another day or not. Sometimes recently I’ve told them to rewear something just because I’m behind on the laundry though.

Laundry is going to hopefully change a bit anyway. Currently we barely even bother with a laundry basket because the Caglets just drop stuff everybloodywhere. And I just get them to bring it all down in the morning and dump it on the kitchen floor, as there’s no room for a basket in there anyway. I wash everyone’s in together and then it needs sorting once dry. However in the new house there will be laundry baskets in all three bedrooms. I will then take turns washing from each basket (although the Caglets are going to do their own with supervision) and then the putting away will theoretically be easier too, as the Caglets will only have to do theirs every three or four days (thinking it should go us/DD1/us/DS rather than us/DD1/DS, since ‘us’ is currently me DH and baby too.

Completely and utterly shattered after Ikea still! I think we have made most of the decisions but need to find a few things out.

HillsBesideTheSea · 02/07/2018 19:15

Sorry I've. Have you got a link to them? There might be another solution.
