After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Tip run this morning 👍🏼 garden is gonna look NEAT!

@StealthNinjaMum I ended up chucking a lot of samples or giving them to friends. I now only own what I actually use in terms of beauty products which feels great.

Hi, I'm currently getter bag rid of loads of stuff as I'm doing a big move! So far I've sold 47 items on eBay and currently have 23 listed. What doesn't sell goes to charity. Last weekend I dropped 4 black bags to a charity shop and a few weeks before then I think we dropped 5 off to a different charity shop. I have been buying new stuff BUT suitable stuff for my new life. I really enjoy selling things I no longer wear and then buying in new things that I love and wear all the time. My son is even in in it and sold some old expensive toys he no longer likes and bought himself (smaller) new stuff he loves!

Weekly update Smile

I have continued to deal with the assortment of odd things in the washing basket and "ironing pile". In the laundry basket the only odd things left are 2 ties which I have to ask DP about. The other things I described have all been washed or chucked. I mended a polo shirt from the bottom of the "ironing pile" and have rewashed it and ironed it. I have also rewashed some sheets which had toppled off and were very creased and dusty. Blush

On Saturday, while the dogs were out for walk, I emptied all the spare batteries out of a drawer. At the back I found new rechargeable AAAs for a phone handset which hadn't come to light earlier in the week during a rummage. We would have bought more of them if Tesco had had them - so I managed to save some money! I tested the loose batteries and put a number in the bag for recycling. I still need to tidy them up so that the older batteries are used first, but the dogs arrived back too soon. Some of them came from my Mum's house so there is an assortment of different makes and ages.

I put a number more things in the black bag on the landing, and delivered that to the recycling site yesterday along with the bag of dud batteries.

I've just listed 3 more things on eBay and have had 3 bids on my current items for sell, so that's at least £30 made on clothes/beauty products that I've never worn or used! I'm already wondering what lovely item I can spend that money on? A new dress maybe???

IHateYourCarpet · 02/04/2018 13:20

Failing miserably this weekend. Took DS home, where the in laws bought him three new toys 😩 it's lovely. But he has SO much stuff. And our house move is looking like it's going to be abroad, so even more of a reason to ditch stuff that's not needed.

Going to try really hard this week to work through some of the stuff in the cupboards.

OutsideContextProblem · 02/04/2018 13:53

On my way home and committing to binning/filing the foot of paper in the corner of the living room floor while I watch Paddington this afternoon.

BusterGonad · 02/04/2018 14:56

IHateYour I'm in the same boat as we are moving abroad too and when my son is with his nan she buys him the hugest toy humanly possible in the charity shop!!!

SandAndSea · 02/04/2018 17:42

I didn't get rid of anything yesterday so have 2 for today: a container has gone to recycling and I've advertised a handbag for sale online. I'm debating whether or not to sell another one too. I don't have many so I might genuinely need it.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 02/04/2018 18:18

A very successful day - two bags to charity and the eBay buyer picked up my wedding dress 👍🏼 Also got some herbs and flowers for the front garden on the way back from the tip.

AdaColeman · 02/04/2018 18:21

I've been thinning out paperwork today, but not made much progress.

DuchessofManchester · 02/04/2018 18:27

Well the rubbish bank holiday weather has had a good effect on my wardrobe at least! Cleared out things I never wear and have a large bin bag of stuff to drop off at the charity shop. Going to do pyjamas and underwear drawers next weekend.

IHateYourCarpet · 02/04/2018 18:36

Buster it's just a massive pain isn't it? I feel so much guilt getting rid of gifts given to DS, but he's got a Kalax unit from Ikea that's overflowing. He's only four months old! But they don't feel like they're 'mine' to throw away. It's so difficult.

Cleared out a box of food we are never going to use today. Sealed stuff put aside for the food bank, and old stale cereal and stuff has gone out for the birds.

namastayinbed · 02/04/2018 20:51

3 In: candle x 2 and storage box x 1 (yes, I went to ikea!). In my defence, it's a small storage box that I plan to decant all my sentimental crap from a bigger box into.

10 Out: 1x pack fake nails, 1x bag to charity shop (culled last month so not counting individual items in it), 2 x items for rag bag, 5 x baby clothes items, 1 x bundle of greeting cards and photos from aforementioned sentimental bag

Out so far this month: 7

CiderwithBuda · 03/04/2018 16:31

Can I join please? Desperately need to declutter this house.

Started recently - or should I say started again for the 10079th time!

We have lived overseas but are back in uk now and have been in this house for almost 7 years. Moving country every so often was a great incentive to declutter and as we haven needed to everything has piled up. Garage is a mess. We have another room attached to the garage with treadmill, extra feeezer etc and it is full of crap too.

In the house we decided we never used the separate dining room so we are currently switching it in to an office for DH with a nice sitting area in the bay window. Have a damp issue in an internal wall which is hopefully being dealt with this week. The room is currently a complete mess. But I have gotten rid of lots of stuff in it.

The bedroom that DH was using for an office is now a nice newly decorated bedroom. Am determined to keep it clear of stuff. Although my niece stayed in it over Easter and has left some stuff in a drawer as she feels it’s her room. Bless her. She’s 8.

Other spare room has had a bit of a declutter but I could do more.

My bedroom is a disaster zone. As is my en suite. And the wardrobe.

Today’s job was getting kitchen and dining area back to normal after the weekend. Got rid of lots of empty wine and beer bottles to recycling!

Have a few bags of bedding etc to go to charity shop and I will do that tomorrow. I might actually go and put it in the car now.

Long term I have a list of cupboards and drawers to tackle in every room. Plus garage and gym. Plus shed. And one half of the garden resembles Steptoe’s yard.

Will need regular kicking up the backside!

MajestyRoyal · 03/04/2018 18:50

Threw out old pyjamas which had bleach stains on and generally looked old and boring. I am only having lovely nighties and matching silk and lace shorts/vest sets from now on.

Also threw out a changing mat.

AbbieLexie · 03/04/2018 19:02

Find this thread so helpful - motivating and supportive. Have kept to getting rid of one thing daily even if it's just an envelope recycled. Spaces appearing in the first lot of cellar shelves so I am succeeding.

SandAndSea · 03/04/2018 19:05

Abbie - Yeah, I love this thread too. It's been so helpful for me.

Cupoteap · 04/04/2018 06:36

So a massive one from me, I spent a day of the bank holiday sorting out stuff in my room. It had a horrendous pile, or rather mountain of stuff as my room is the dumping ground.

5 bags of rubbish/recycling plus some charity shop bits and a pile to pass on to various people/school/childminder.

I can see carpet!

StealthNinjaMum · 04/04/2018 08:43

Welcome cider you're doing well

About two weeks ago when I started on the makeup/ toiletries/ skincare I emptied the bathroom cabinets of dh's stuff. It included almost 20 old medicines (mainly teeny, tiny hay fever medicines). I put it all on a tray and left it on his pillow and he ignored it. Last night I mentioned it and he agreed it could all go. Victory! He had removed the box of an electric razor and again I had another conversation (speaking to him like a child ) about why we don't need the empty box taking up space in our bathroom cabinets and he backed down.

So I need to pop to a pharmacy to get rid of old medicines and the dump at some point to get rid of a broken electric razor. But the best bit is a whole new shelf in my bathroom cabinet where I can start to put makeup that has been on my bedroom floor for a fortnight waiting for a home.

Thanks for th welcome Stealth and the friendly kick!

A box gone this morning. Freecycled some quilting fabrics and patterns and it was picked up this morning. Gone to a woman with motor neurone disease who says all she can still do is sew. Hope she gets lots of pleasure out of it all. It’s been sitting in a drawer in 3 different countries and 6 houses.

Didn’t put the charity shop stuff into the car as DH said he would go to the supermarket this morning so I’ll do that this afternoon.

MajestyRoyal · 04/04/2018 11:49

Stealth my DH also keeps empty boxes. Apparently it keeps the value of things? Would be okay if he was actually going to sell the items. So I bought plastic storage tubs for bits and bobs and put all cardboard boxes in the shed. I am now getting rid of cardboard at each recycling bin empty day. It's slowly but surely disappearing and once the boxes have gone I'm going to clear out the shed properly and store the outside bins inside so we can fit a table and chair in the garden along with DC outdoor toys.

I threw out some old wooden utensils this morning and replaced with nice new ones.

RebelRebel79 · 04/04/2018 13:29

Can I join? We’re having our house renovated shortly. It’s always a mess. Dh keeps saying we’ll be tidy when it’s done. I disagree (we are not the clean up before bed type of people!) we just need less stuff

Today I have put on Freegle a Melissa and Doug easel that is never used, well until I say it’s going. But sod it, it’s definitley going now.

StealthNinjaMum · 04/04/2018 17:21

majesty I keep plenty of boxes too, I agree it does help with resale value and also I just things are neatly stacked in boxes. I always keep electrical boxes in case the item goes wrong and needs to be returned and then find the box five years after I threw the item away!.

A question about tights. I have counted 8 skin colour tights, most look new (but not in packets). Please can someone persuade me to give them away. I wear lots of dresses but with chcolate brown or thick black tights. I have had them for years and can't imagine ever wearing them. Perhaps I should keep one in case of an emergency? Also should I give them to a charity shop as rags or would a charity shop just take them. If I throw them away I will have an EMPTY drawer!

OP posts:
OutsideContextProblem · 04/04/2018 17:28

Skin colour tights are useful for unexpectedly cold summer days surely?

CiderwithBuda · 04/04/2018 17:33

Keep one as an emergency pair. I never wear skin colour tights any more. If it’s cold I wear jeans! If you are going to a wedding or something and need skin colour tights - well they aren’t exactly expensive are they?

And I think I would put them as rags.

I got rid of a load of pairs or tights a couple of years ago. Haven’t needed them since!
