Hello all and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to the January Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! Typically there are a lot of new members in January so I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Old members, as you know there have been a few issues with links at times so if there is some chopping and changing over the month with the links then that is why. Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I’m sure lots of you have New Years Resolutions to be organised and to declutter, as I do every year Grin. Be kind to yourselves and careful not to crash and burn!

I am risking making two:-
Go to bed at 11pm unless decent reason why not.
Spend less time on my phone.

Here are the links for Monday 1st Jan. although I am linking these then if you are treating today as a holiday (as much as is possible in real life anyway!) then feel free to take today off.

*
Here is the daily summary for Monday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I’m afraid I start the year confused Blush. I’ve just looked on the Flylady website and the link to the zone and missions is here which indicates we will be in zone 5 which is the living room. I would have thought the month starts in zone 1 but I know this has happened before, I think SC explained? TBH after Xmas I think most living rooms could use a bit of work so it won’t hurt Smile. Apologies if this is confusing.

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

Here is the daily summary for Saturday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

We are in zone 1 this week which is
the entrance, front porch and dining room.

However, it’s the weekend, so no missions or zone work unless you want to.

Please have a look through the information on the website at the relevant zones as I know Flylady is keen that we do look at the website.

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 1.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 1 is here.

toostressy I am well overdue going to Asthma nurse. It is usually only this time of year that I am bothered by asthma. Everyone seems to have this cough thing but mine is worse because of asthma in fact I think it is more asthma than cough thing. I am going to have a look on Internet...he he I bet there is an App for it nowadays. I might remember to do it then. I'm very lax until I can hardly speak then I use it and keep an eye on it.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 05/01/2018 20:24

Bower, I am a HCP so I am careful about commenting on health conditions on the internet and am not an asthma expert. That said, please make an appointment. It is really important and you should have an asthma plan.

Zoo I remember you liking Ghibli films, so I just had to tell you, Cagletini is getting gurgly and this evening she said something that sounded very much like “HAAAAAM” so the Caglets have decided she should be called Ponyo 😍😂

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/01/2018 21:42

Cag😍
Toostressy i think something had been said he was super good with all the kids and was messing around during playtime with D's n lil zoo

WhispersOfWickedness · 05/01/2018 22:02

Still here but not too much time for anything other than the basics. Will be back with a big to do list in the morning 😁
Zoo - that sort of situation would really bother my dd too 😔 Really hope something was said because I don't think it's acceptable to 'explode' at children who are only there to do some singing at the end of a long week...
Cag - Home ed sounds amazing, I think it's something I would have really liked to have done, but my DC disagreed 😂 I am genuinely shocked that there was a bullying home ed family!! Those sorts of families are normally too keen to be hanging around a playground and giving hard working teachers a hard time 😒 😬 (can you tell I have fallen foul of a bullying family this year - weirdly the kids are mostly fine, it was the adults!! 😣) And such bad luck that your daughter encountered them after her bad school experiences 😔
Thank you for the links for tomorrow, it'll help me get off to a flying start 😁

HillsBesideTheSea · 05/01/2018 23:08

No parties were harmed in the you are in serious shit kiddo conversation. And terms and conditions were agreed to. Ds has not said a word about the reorganisation but he asked about a ds game he had not seen for ages and found it was magically in the box where it should be so is happy.

Didn't get around to finishing ds' room because had a proper mission to find the curtains. After taking the bed apart to check the storage there nope only towels I had to head back into the craft room/office space and pull it apart again. Did find them and have got them washed but there is still a couple of hours left in the boys room plus his box of paper work (HIS job to sort) and the lego. Otoh having to pull apart the craft room meant I found my summer curtains so that I can get some black out backing material and back them before i want to hang them.
That said I really really want to get that room sorted as soon as i can. Especially as building work resumes next month and will be another long year of DIY, work men and swearing yes the last bit is compulsory honest

ta da
most to the to do list plus a few bits extra

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 00:43

Zoo sorry I didn't see it until too late then I was about to add it to above post when best friend arrived. I thought she had come down with the vacuum but no she brought gin! So we had a tasting session with some miniatures while the men watched the football.
I think I would write him a letter. He shouldn't be shouting like that. I would point out that she hasn't wanted to return and why. A letter will give him time to ponder, hopefully.

Toostressy.
Sorry I meant that to be about peak flow chart (the app) I have found one on Asthma UK so will use that to plot my results. I'm ok I have a verbal plan in place and I am not low enough yet to require anymore intervention. I know when to go to hospital. I haven't needed to go very often. Some of the times have been associated with allergies and mouth swelling. DH is here now so I'm not on my own. Locally there is a virus going with coughing. I haven't got a cold it is just like a tickly annoying cough. I will ring if I get worse and I have some prednisolone at home for the allergies. I step up my inhaler when I get like this and it usually works. I have two. I'll make an appointment with the asthma nurse. I'm ok in the house it is when I go out. It is quite cold here.

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 00:51

Ta Das
Book shelf, one done.
Coats done.
M&S no breaded fish so got prawn curry.
Emptied and sorted two bags for school. Haven't taken clothes off because friend arrived.
Bed sorted and swish and swipe.
DH hasn't vacuumed. Best friend is lending me hers to try out on the stairs tomorrow. She says it is brill.

HillsBesideTheSea · 06/01/2018 01:01

Bower they did put out a warning about the cold and breathing a while back. Have you tried the cover mouth and nose with scarf type advice? Any good?

Afreshnewyearplease · 06/01/2018 04:13

And i am up likely for the day with ds3

bower my dp has bad asthma and always extra bad this time of year, usually has course steroids every winter

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 08:09

Yes hills and I'm making a snood😃 it helps a little for warding off very cold air. I didn't see that warning.

Afresh my kids are asthmatic except 2. 1 is chronic and has been since a child not diagnosed until 7 but wheezy baby. 2 never any signs and 3&4 grew out of it. 4s boyfriend / partner has it too. I wasn't diagnosed until about 50 but looking back think I had exercise induced asthma. Can remember having to come off basketball court as a young girl in major comp. couldn't breathe at all for a bit but went back on. The lad that looked after me is now a GP. I played a lot of sport those days.
Had a good night so think it is improving.

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 08:19

Thanks Hills I have read it now on BBC news. I have done it for a while just because I have found it beneficial especially when standing on playground duty. I think that is how I discovered it actually.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 06/01/2018 08:41

Morning all.

Ah glad you have an asthma plan then Bower. Scarf definitely a help over mouth and nose.

Ta da:-
DH out and both girls grumpy. Happy times.

To do:-
Everything.

Planning a day at home as DD1 has homework (why do infant school age children have homework over Xmas? Of all the holidays Angry). Tomorrow is busy and then we are back at school Monday.

Must get on. Need coffee.

Afreshnewyearplease · 06/01/2018 08:43

What hw does she have stressy? Our dd just had to draw about her time off school and write a couple of words.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 06/01/2018 09:36

Well I am whinging really I guess Afresh as it is not too bad. She has to make a poster. Also spellings and new reading books. We have not done spellings but to be fair they are not sure immediately when she is back.

I asked her if she wanted to do her reading, she said no, it was still Christmas holidays. I have to say I agreed with her Grin. She read loads over Xmas, just not the school books so am not worried she has missed out on reading.

I hate craft homework as the parents end up doing it anyway. It all becomes so competitive and now DH has got loads of felt and has a plan for it so I can’t even get on with it as he is not here.

Even one of their out of school classes which always sets homework said they we not setting any as it was time to Christmas.

DD2 has a tiny bit of homework which is fine but also new reading books. We have read other stuff over Christmas so she has read one of them once and I’ll get them out a couple of times this weekend.

Callmecordelia · 06/01/2018 10:11

Hate craft homework. I say I don't like it in every single parent feedback questionnaire. We get one big piece to do every half term. I am so resentful of the time it takes up. DH has one weekend day in four with DD. So I refuse to spoil that with craft homework we both detest. My mother (former infant school headteacher, very experienced) has taken pity on me and does it with DD. It looks amazing, because she knows all the tricks, has time to plan it and do it with her carefully. I don't. I'm looking after a toddler as well as the six year old on my own most of the time. I used to be embarrassed about hers looking nice, because she'd obviously had loads of help, but I don't give a shit now, especially after seeing some of the other parent's creations. Also the teachers barely glance at the damn things. They're just put on in an exhibition after school at the end of term so we can all compare admire each others handiwork.

I said how much I loathed it to the deputy head once. It was like I kicked a puppy. He looked at me with these big, sad, reproachful eyes and said, "it's supposed to be fun Mrs Cordelia."

I hate it. Sorry, rant over.

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 10:22

I was just wondering what he was making!😁

We told them for homework that they had no homework and to make sure they had fun and no fighting with brothers and sisters. We try!

DH has brought me a cup of tea😃 I dozed back off after catching up on emails.

Plan for today.
Hall. Hoping BF brings Dyson down for stairs, otherwise I will have to use mine - it is getting hacky.
Fold laundry or iron.
Get DH to bring up compost. I bought a load of cheap bulbs from Dobbies so need to plant them.
Put all Christmas stuff in loft😕
Was going for walk😕 and make afternoon tea. DH doesn't know there is Christmas cake I was saving it for today.
That will do for now.

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2018 10:28

I have never heard of a school doing that. Can't imagine many of our parents doing it maybe a few, two😏 we sometimes do Easter Bonnets. Colouring competitions are about the limit, oh, and the egg one. That is very, very creative. The kids love that one and we go class by class to look at them.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 06/01/2018 10:33

Grin at “it’s supposed to be fine” Callme. That sounds like perfect homework Bower.

To be fair, I love the school and homework in termtime is usually reasonable although has ramped up this year for year 2 so need to see how that goes. It’s just the obligatory craft stuff in the holidays that annoys. YY to trying to do it with a toddler or other responsibilities. Lots of parents I know seem to love craft homework though, or indeed any homework. Thankfully most of my parent friends feel the same as me about it Smile.

I have to finish the boy's room today and I dont want to move, breathing hurts. Too much dust and not enough sleep. So first coffee and I really must put book physio on monday's list and wednesday's antiprocrastination list too

Stressy ds was allowed to put books on his reading record that were not school books. can dd put the books in she has read even though they were not the school issued?

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 06/01/2018 11:05

Good point Hills. I might put some down. I did ask that question a while back and never got a straight answer, might ask again as haven’t asked this academic year.
