Neat and clean in 2017 - it's the January Flylady thread

Star HAPPY NEW YEAR Star

Welcome to the January Flylady thread, where we try and maintain our nests in good order by following the Flylady method. We'll post links each day to the Flylady website for the babysteps, daily focus and extra missions in the current zone. The habit of the month is shining your sink (or whatever other place in your home motivates you).

If you are just starting, Flylady recommends decluttering the weekly zone before doing the detailed cleaning and not to do too much at once!

All are welcome, so feel free to join us anytime.

absolutly kicking myself about chucking out the cute black boots with kitten heel that I never wore.

Rshard · 24/01/2017 10:17

Morning!

Early start as it was my turn to do the morning swim session run but I did do my online shop whilst there and when we got home DH had made oven porridge for me and cooked some bacon for DD so he is temporarily relieved of my anger for his floordrobe. Only temporarily mind.

Ta da's
Towels in the wash
DD out to school
Dishwasher emptied
Other pots washed
Living room dusted

To do
Did bedrooms
Dinner
Dinner tidy up
Hoover living room and bedrooms. No carpet on stairs/landing and 3rd bedroom presently as decorating
Play board games with DD tonight
Go to Aldi

Rshard · 24/01/2017 10:18

Oh and the 5 minutes of removing stuff from the bedroom and 10 minutes putting it away

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 10:24

(Pats Cotswold on shoulder in return in brisk kindly, stiff upper lip sort of way. Hope you are OK. Your thread leading is bloomin' splendid btw. Flowers )

Very impressed by all of you who have lost weight. I am too feeble to even try in January although something must be done! Must decide whether to start in Feb or wait for Lent as usual... .

Thanks Purple she only missed half a day of academics in the end as the dreaded swimming takes up the entire afternoon (still not good though) but she did do tutoring session in evening at least + hwk. Dh will not be impressed when he gets back though!

Hope your gp is OK, they are such characters, fingers and toes crossed for him!

Poor you Afreshstart that sounds like a rather brutal start to the day x Brew Hope your ds's stomach has settled

Right, now the snow has melted a bit, had better walk the furry one ...

Waves to everybody!

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 10:29

Scuttl if pavements anything like they are this way, then reckon tan boots are the way to go! Good luck!

Rshard early morning swim sessions in freezing January = sheer heroism Brew

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 24/01/2017 10:33

Morning all,

DD2 at childcare for the school day, DD1 at school so ploughing through the tidying up etc of the sssignment. It always surprises me how long the finishing touches take - have worked solidly for 50 mins and still on first section Sad.

To do:-
Only thing on to do list is assignment and very basic dishwasher etc for now

Purple, I used to love Greys Anatomy but not seen it for years, do you have to have sky (we don't)? You've just reminded me of it.

Sorry to buck the trend but my DH is tidier than me Blush most of the time.

Scuttl, I have no a very casual style (although have tried to smarted myself up over the last few months) so not sure I would be much help. I'd probably go with the tan boots if it's for an interview as they will look smarter plus is it below zero outside (assuming you are in U.K.) but others may have a better idea. Good luck!

afresh, she doesn't get a huge amount of homework, usually half an hour's worth plus reading but is more like an hour's worth this week so I think it is starting to ramp up a bit and we need more of a routine.

We do 20-30 mins on a sat morning while DD2 is in her class but that wasn't enough to gerbil it done this week. Just trying to plan ahead really.

Right, timer for my 5 min break has gone off so back to it now.

Big hello to everyone else and don't worry, haven't forgotten about doing Feb thread Smile.

Neenook · 24/01/2017 10:51

Morning, may I join you?
I seem to have turned into a slob over the last year. I'm not sure why, but my house is a constant tip and I've put on two and a half stone. I spend too much time procrastinating and lounging around instead of getting on with things.

I HATE mess and clutter but can't get motivated to sort it out. The Christmas decks are still on the landing waiting to get put in the loft, there are piles of washing everywhere, the dog needs walking, the house needs cleaning...and all I want to do is get into bed Confused

I need a massive kick up the arse. I makes me feel rubbish and I know if I make a start I'll feel so much better.

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 24/01/2017 11:03

Hi neenook, everyone's welcome, jump right in, were coming to the end of the month and the lists may seem really long, don't worry though, most of us follow the flylady thing with the links that are put up daily rather than trying to follow the whole flylady site and getting the countless emails from flylady, your first task is to shine your sink, some of us with a lot of kids choose to shine the bathroom sink rather than kitchen owing to kids dumping plates in a freshly polished sink, (even if we have an empty dishwasher) and some of us follow it loosely.

I'm sure someone else will be along soon to give you more info.

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 12:26

A very warm welcome to Neenook !

Go easy on yourself - I think we've all had times/have times when we feel as you do - I know I certainly have (still do). In fact, the Flylady system was borne out of her own depression/ lack of motivation so I hope you find it helpful. Start with small steps and gradually build up and don't hesitate to post on here for support x. Good luck with it! Flowers

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 12:29

PS if it's the consolation, I've put on three stone in the last five years and my Christmas decoration boxes are still stacked up on the landing too! Grin

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 12:31

Flylady system does definitely help though I should add! And stops one feeling overwhelmed and panicky. Adapt it to suit yourself and start slow and steady x

Afreshstartplease · 24/01/2017 12:35

My Xmas decorations were on the landing until last week!

You should both go and put them away now! Honestly you will feel much better

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 12:43

Grin Afreshstart ridiculous though this sounds, I am waiting to wash and dry decorations from top of Christmas cake - only just finished - to put in Christmas "catering" box before I store away with all the others... And need to clear up card ephemera as everyone here on continent goes on sending cards until end January ... And before that I was waiting for new LED Christmas lights to arrive that I've bought in sale to replace those that broke over the holidays ...So that I can pack them away with rest of decorations and everything will be in order for next yr when I open them up again ... Painful but true I'm afraid...Always an excuse on my part Blush

Afreshstartplease · 24/01/2017 12:51

Tut tut SC!

The ridiculous early start has now started to hit me full in the face and I could really do with a nap!

3 year old is going to be awful on the school run too so I am dreading that

PurpleDaisies · 24/01/2017 13:07

Back home with lunch now and am pleased to report gp is fine. sweeping I totally agree gps are proper little characters. We've got four and they're all just lovely. Mr pig was our first so I've got a bit of a soft spot for him. He's got a dodgy shaped jaw so every three weeks or so one tooth overgrows and needs filing down under a light anaesthetic. He goes in first thing and I pick him up a few hours later. Normally he's straight back in the food dish or whirring at his lady friends!

scuttl I sympathise with the decluttering of shoes-ice got kind paid I only ever wear to weddings so got rid of them. Then I had a wedding and I couldn't wear the dress I wanted because the only pair of shoes that went with it I'd sent to the charity shop. I even tried to buy them back but they'd gone.

toostressy unfortunately my greys anatomy is on DVD. My sister and I own them all between us.

rshard I'm intrigued by oven porridge. I've always done mine in the microwave.

Welcome neenook. It doesn't matter what state your house is in now, you'll get it sorted. There's no rush - I like the flylady saying that it didn't get messy overnight so it won't be tidy overnight. You're never behind and ANYTHING you do is positive so don't beat yourself up if it still looks untidy. I loosely follow the system. I focus mainly on the zone of the week but sometimes there are other things to do more urgently. I really like using timers. Tidying for ten/fifteen minutes seems really manageable and it's amazing what you can get done. Once you're mainly straight you can get a room back to looking presentable in ten minutes. I'd take the bits that are useful (for me the general structure, the timers, the tidy missions) and ignore the rest (I didn't like the baby steps and went straight to doing what was on the flight plan, I don't like a lot of the tweeness, the daily focus never fits with what I'm doing).

We did a massive declutter and sort out a few years ago. It took almost a year to do the whole house but it was definitely worth it. The more storage you've got the better too. Good luck!

CotswoldStrife · 24/01/2017 13:57

Welcome Neenook, good to have you with us.

I've done a few more loads of laundry today, a smidge of exercise (only the Wii Fit U) and a bit of tidying/putting the dry laundry away. Will do some ironing now and get ready for tonight's after-school activity.

I'm OK really - something has happened that has made me think of a bad time years ago. Strange how you can be fine and then suddenly transported back with all the associated emotions! It's just someone (not DH, thankfully) being a prat and it has reminded me what a major prat they can be given half a chance!

Welcome neenook

Fab news scuttle go you!

I'm not sure if oven porridge is an actual thing or something that DH has made up! He mixed oats and almond milk with blueberries and chopped apple and put in the oven at a low temperature. Not sure how long it was in for. Was lovely, quite dense in texture but nice to come home to after dd's 5.15-7.00 swim and a foggy drive.

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 15:11

Cotswold Flowers

Scuttl yay! Congrats!

Purple glad your wee furry is OK!

Grin Afreshstart.
Hope school run not too awful.

Spent far too long Mnsnetting and not enough Flying today but have walked furry x2, done four loads of laundry and TD/hung up, battered on phone to sisters and nephew, cleaned bathroom, put away laundry, cooked carrot, bacon and lentil soup.

FoolandFitz · 24/01/2017 18:04

I was heading over to the naughty corner but now I need to lie down in a darkened room. DS (8) just dialled 999 and when I realised I took the phone off him and apologised and put the phone down.

I was busy warming up curry, DP was also busy in the kitchen. I heard DS say something about calling the police and I said "oh yes, call the police", thinking he was pretending and next thing I know I heard him say "of course, I dialled 999" and I have never moved so fast. Sad

foxessocks · 24/01/2017 18:30

Oh fool you weren't to know! The number of times my dd says she is going to call the police or the fire brigade and I go along with it. Luckily she doesn't know how to actually make a phone call yet but I can totally see how that could happen! The fact that you are upset about it shows you are clearly not the type to waste police time!!

I've caught up on the thread - lots been going on today! Congrats scuttl

Hi to everyone else !

We have had a busy day today but have managed to do my normal daily routine washing and swish and swipe and dishwasher etc. Also:

Ta das
Dinner cooked and kitchen tidied afterwards
Decluttered my underwear / pyjama drawer
Did the removing stuff not belonging in bedroom, there wasn't much but two of things belong to dh and he needs to sort them out. I expect they'll end up back in our bedroom on the side again Angry
Picked up some groceries
Picked up a parcel for a birthday present (but now realised I may not have any wrapping paper argh)

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 24/01/2017 19:43

Welcome to Neenook Smile.

Cotswold Flowers. Thanks Purple, had been hoping it was on a different channel now. Glad GP ok. SC, it's often very hard, isn't it to know if they are too ill for school. Rshard, might try that porridge one day, it sounds nice. Afresh, hope you managed to do school run ok. Fooland Shock how stressful! Can see how it would happen so easily though with assuming he was pretending. foxes, you always seem to get loads done, what's your secret Smile?

Scuttl Star Star Star brilliant news Smile.

Big wing flaps to everyone else. Back with lists in a bit.

Neenook · 24/01/2017 19:58

Well I've made a reasonable start today...the sink is clear if not shiny and I've made a good start on the washing. Just a couple of loads left to do tomorrow and a stack of putting away and ironing.

It'll be nice to start tomorrow a little way up the mountain figuratively!

Thanks again for all the welcomes.

FoolandFitz · 24/01/2017 20:09

DS is ASD so I should never assume. Sometimes I forget he is ASD and then he goes and does something completely random, and I'm like, oh ok and my brain has to play catch up with his condition. Does that make sense?
