Neat and clean in 2017 - it's the January Flylady thread

CotswoldStrife · 30/12/2016 23:42

Star HAPPY NEW YEAR Star

Welcome to the January Flylady thread, where we try and maintain our nests in good order by following the Flylady method. We'll post links each day to the Flylady website for the babysteps, daily focus and extra missions in the current zone. The habit of the month is shining your sink (or whatever other place in your home motivates you).

If you are just starting, Flylady recommends decluttering the weekly zone before doing the detailed cleaning and not to do too much at once!

All are welcome, so feel free to join us anytime.

Ooh the microfibre cloths I got are four different colours so that's good. So do you use them wet or dry ? And then you can wash them ? Are they better than those blue jay cloth type things and yellow dusters?

foxessocks · 23/01/2017 12:58

Yep afresh my dh does that too just chucks it all on top so I have a laundry landslide whenever I want to put a wash on.

foxessocks · 23/01/2017 12:59

Woops
Forgot
Ta das
Decluttered sock drawer
Picked up clothes from bedroom floor

To do
Bed sheets and probably loads more stuff

Stilllivinginazoo · 23/01/2017 13:02

foxes decluttering choc bread sounds perfect antidote dull, cold mondayGrin
afresh hope its not start something lurgyish and little fresh is just testing your laundry skillsHmm

Just had text the plumbers end route.council clearly have money to waste on that fangled service but don't empty dustbins, clean streets

Afreshstartplease · 23/01/2017 13:05

Baby had second dose of rotavitus vaccine last week which I think is the cause of the shoulder poo. The milk spew is probably down to him being jiggled about whilst I tried to clean all the shoulder poo!

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2017 13:43

I will gladly help decluttered choc bread if anyone has any going spare! I agree with using microfibre cloths basically everywhere. I mostly use them wet with cleaning spray.

I've also got a loose relationship with flylady. I find her very twee but the basic structure and concentrating on one room a week suits me. I've got a grotty old plasticky enamel sink which never shines so I'm always on the wrong foot to start with.

I'm halfway through the big clean. Living room and kitchen are miles better after 10 minutes then fifteen minutes each. Next is the bathroom and bedroom.

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 23/01/2017 13:47

foxes the disinfectant and toilet one I use wet, polish and windows dry, because I'm using a spray and drying is being done while wiping. things like sinks and sides I dry after with a tea towel so they can be stood on by ignorant cats who believe every clean thing must be walked on.

Stilllivinginazoo · 23/01/2017 14:21

scuttl my cats same.ones partial sleeping freshly cleaned sinkand leaving tufts everywhere/in plughole(boak)
Plumber nearly done.sink pipe(external)fixed, bath rebook next week to sort external pipe (sigh)

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2017 14:24

My pesky guinea pigs like to celebrate being cleaned out by sprinting round their cage...spraying sawdust all over the floor. It's a good thing I like them.

Bathroom's clean, bedroom's tidy. Washing machine is on, dishwasher's loaded. A very productive hour.

Afreshstartplease · 23/01/2017 14:31

Dear god I feel like I've done loads!

All pots washed
All bottles sterilised
Porch hoovered
Living room hoovered
Pets clean
Bin empty
Worktops wiped
Kitchen swept
Kitchen mopped
Table wiped
3 loads washed and dried
All dry washing up stairs and half put away
Old shoes/boots bagged up

As well as regular changing of the baby and feeding of both baby and dd

Smile putting feet up for ten now

comeagainforbigfudge · 23/01/2017 15:06

Slides in all sheepish like after being awol for a week

I was lots of nights last week and although
I have done a bit of flying (mainly trying to keep on top of laundry/kitchen & bathroom clean) I've not managed to keep with posting.

scuttl good luck with your interview tomorrow.

Ooooh microfibre cloths are quite good although I've returned to cut up towels. No real reason, just decided one day.

I'm also being a bit choosy with my flying. Mainly because of my shifts but I can see small pockets of progress already. And I've started to get annoyed with myself for letting hotshots build up again. Which I think must be a good thing!

Ta da's so far:

Shopping done
Bed stripped
Bedding washed - currently in dryer
Uniforms washed and dried
15min declutter in bedroom x2
Towels refolded/old ones removed
Bolognaise made
Soup using old veg made
Extractor filter thingy washed
Bed side cabinet gutted - although this has made more mess as moved all make up/hair and skincare stuff out of it and piled it all on top of a chest of drawers (with the rest) but it's altogether and will be the next job I tackle tomorrow

Still to
Make dinner
Start application form for new job. It's a completely different area that will involve retraining and I have no idea what to say but will give it a bash procrastinate more likely
Finish drying bedding
Remake bed

Dreamingoutloud7 · 23/01/2017 17:13

Just checking back, thanks for the good wishes, to be fair dh does do his share of duties, he cooks dinner every night, washes the car, puts on the bedding and will do other bits and pieces as and when.
I think it's more that he can't see what I see, I'm more of a perfectionist than him, so to him leaving clean clothes folded on the breakfast bar is not an issue as he will put them away at some point, however I see it as a job half finished and get so annoyed that I put them away before he can!
Also I need to learn to ask for help you know, very difficult for me but I know if I said, can you empty the dishwasher before you go to work each morning as bending down is getting difficult? Then he absolutely would, it's just I get annoyed that he doesn't seem to read my mind and do it before I ask!! Grin
Anyway on to the list,

Tadas
Made bed
Dishwasher emptied
Breakfast and lunch bits in dishwasher
Sofas purchased!!
Tesco shop done
Towels in wash

Todo
Towels in dryer and away
Dishwasher loaded and on
Wipe down kitchen after dinner
Bath and Biscuit!

foxes I use microfibre for everything, except for my kitchen counters, but they are amazing at catching dust and dirt and so easy to chuck in the washing machine.

scuttl I only got as far as clothes with actual konmari however I will say the book has definitely stuck with me and I regularly declutter, the amount of stuff I have gotten rid of since I read it is amazing!!

foxessocks · 23/01/2017 17:16

Ta das
Bed sheets stripped from all beds (dh job to put new ones on!)
Dinner cooking (easy fish and chips tonight)

CotswoldStrife · 23/01/2017 19:43

Sorry to be AWOL today, I have been busy doing laundry and kitchen work. There are a lot of postings to catch up on, so I'm just going to help DD with her homework and then I'll be back

Channel that inner Arnie Cotswold! :o Please don't.

I don't really Fly properly either but I love this thread, the general principles of FlyLady are gradually sinking in. I was very excited the other day when a new home ed mum mentioned C.H.A.O.S., it's like finding a fellow member an exclusive club! :o

I love Kondo too. Like many here it's just not been possible to do the huge declutter all in one go thing (health mainly) but the principle has really stuck with me and I am SO much more able to let things go now which is a huge deal. Seems to be rubbing off on DD too as she's becoming more able to get rid of toys etc.

Nice day today despite me being achy and a hormonal grumpy cowbag from hell. And DS has been a massive pain in the bum for much of the day (granted that may be more down to my aforementioned grumpiness). But we've done project work as a family, DH took them grocery shopping and we've played board games. They're now all bathed and watching Star Wars for the third day running (DS got DH the original box set for his birthday).

Got a friend/mobile hairdresser hopefully coming tomorrow so will need to tidy up a bit more.

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 23/01/2017 20:38

dreaming Its incredible, the only issue i have at the minute is because I'm going room by room, i have boxes of random crap, sentimental and keepsakes and stuff to go to music magpie etc. I'll be glad when its all gone. Dp is getting into it more now as well, the pup had got hold of a teddy his sister bought him, and he was just like ah well it is only clutter.

I lost 4 and a half pound this week, dp had a cuddle earlier and said he reckoned I lost around 2, was gutted when I told him I'd lost 4 and a half, because he was wrong Grin

Hoping tomorrows interview goes ok, everything seems to be going nicely at the moment.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 23/01/2017 22:38

Ok, you are all inspiring me to check out Kondo... one day.

afresh thanks, think we need to do more homework at weekends and I like the idea of getting them to read to me before tea.

Scuttl well done on 4 lb and good luck tomorrow!

Hello to everyone else Smile.

Ta da:-
Token effort before bed routine done
Dishwasher and laundry on
To do list for rest of assignment started

To do:-
Have planned relaxing ish study only tonight so am sitting on the sofa with a blanket reading through assignment guidelines etc and have a few articles to check. Plan was also to tidy study a bit but think I'm too tired for that and will have to do quick room rescue on it tomorrow instead.

CotswoldStrife · 23/01/2017 23:31

Shock Are we all married to the same man - the one with the floordrobe and the inability to lift the lid of the washing basket Shock If so, I apologise for turning him so grey ...

Microfibre cloths - ooh, love 'em! Particularly good on mirrors, glass or screens - clean with damp (often don't need cleaner) and polish with dry. Wash in machine but without any fabric softener. Really good at getting stuff clean IMO.

KonMari - I love her book (I have the first one on Kindle) and find it inspiring but I am too frightened to gather all my stuff together at once. No-one has enough room for my stuff. I need to do the unauthorised pre-Kondo first!

Scuttlbutt good luck with the interview and well done on the weight loss.
Stressy fab work on the assignment!
Rshard that sounds like a lovely weekend.
SC I also hate being the one to say yay or nay to school, I'm not even sure why! DD often says she is fine to go in when I think she's not!
Dreaming the half-done job thing is grating. He should be doing ALL the bending and stretching without being prompted!
Zoo - I am in awe of you hoovering before school, I answered the door in my dressing gown again to take a parcel in for a neighbour. Really must get back into getting up early and getting dressed straight away!
foxes homemade bread is lovely but it doesn't keep that well so you are doing the best thing, scoff away ...
Purple glad to hear that the cake went down well.
freshstart yes, it is amazing that such a small person can produce so much and for it to spread so far.
fudge - choosy flying - I like that, it's a concept I can run with.

There was a Kondo thread on here, it was very fast-moving and I couldn't keep up with it. I am on a FB group which is quite good, not that I contribute but I like to read about success Blush

Will post the links next, fabulous work today people -

cotswold I'm also on an fb group, also don't post but i might do soon. And i think mine might be your mans brother...hes bald so no greys Grin same bloody aweful habits though.

Afreshstartplease · 24/01/2017 05:52

stressy we used to read before bed but found the DC were too tired and it caused tears. They also get rewarded with computer time etc after reading so that motivates them. Do your DC get much homework? We have 12 spellings per week, reading each night (school state 20 min but I feel this too much so do 10) and then three pieces of written work

I have been awake since 4 with thanks to DC3 who woke up DC4...we came down at 5, have fed the baby and now watching shite on TV. I am knackered already and the whole day is in front of me Sad

I might go and sort the washing or pots so atleast I've achieved something for this early start Brew first though!

Oh and RE weight loss I have lost 4/5lb this month after giving up fizzy drinks

Sweepingchange · 24/01/2017 08:30

Morning all!

Yes I definitely am a practitioner of "choosy* or "loose" Flying too and YY, we are definitely all married to the same man! Leaving shreds and socks on top of the laundry basket is one of my all time bugbears!!

Yesterday was a Flying write off. Turns out DD would have been OK to go to school, so effectively I made the wrong decision letting her stay at home Blush (although she does seem very tired - will see what blood tests reveal.) Anyway, having had long discussions about not sliding out of things (long story about swimming and having to do difficult strokes individually in front of entire class) I then went about (gently - wasn't too horrible I promise!) making sure she did lots of hwk and then tested her. Then made her tidy her room and finish final three Xmas thank you letters and had her help me with basic chores. Basically, that took up the entire day! She went back to school quite happily this morning!

Hoping to get more done today!

Good luck with the interview Scuttl!

Happy Flying everyone!

CotswoldStrife · 24/01/2017 09:45

Cag that channel your inner Arnie made me roar last night. I'm adopting it as my motto for the week! In fact the whole thread has been a case of the warm fuzzies for me this month and you have no idea how it's helped over the last few days

So I need to get off t'internet give me a minute today holds more laundry, possibly some ironing and I'll still be trying to get out of the tip trip (as I still haven't been Blush ) Got a few bills in to pay as well, so will add them to the list.

I thought it might have been someone's birthday today but I can't find it now - if I missed your birthday, soz!

Catch you at lunchtime!

shock Are we all married to the same man - the one with the floordrobe and the inability to lift the lid of the washing basket shock If so, I apologise for turning him so grey ...

Me too!!!! We've mainly kicked it now-we instituted minimum standards before bedtime...all clothes must either be in drawers, in the washing basket or out ready for the morning. Dh responds well to very specific tasks and over the years it's got much better. I've learned not to get angry that he hasn't spotted things are dirty and just tell him to clean it instead. That works much better. He still insists on trying to clean the sides in the kitchen with spray and kitchen roll so they never look clean and have smears over them but I've made peace with the fact that that's an argument I just can't be bothered to have any more and they are clean, despite the smeary spray marks.

I've dropped the guinea pig at the vet for a dental and am killing a couple of hours before getting him. Moneys tight this month so it's hard not to shop. My plan is to go to b and q to look at wallpaper and paint which will take ages and then do the weekly shop at Lidl.

Today is the day that under the stairs gets tackled. It is, it is, it is. #mustnotjustwatchgreysanatomyallday

Another massive good luck scuttl.
sweeping those "are they ill enough to stay off" questions are a nightmare. Having sick kids in the classroom is probably worse than ok ones off-it sounds like you did a great job with her yesterday
afreshstart fan weight loss-I'm also eating healthily and am down 5lb. It's great when it actually works isn't it (saying that, I'm in McDonald's now so I'm not sure I'll be down this week!). I've mainly been good though

Hi to everyone else too. Smile

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 24/01/2017 10:13

I have a dilema, I konmaried all my black shoes/boots bar one pair with glitter, can i get away with glitterry strappy heels with baggy black trousers or should I wear tan boots with tiny heel, everything else is trainers or kath kidson style wellies?
