to ask what household crap brings you joy?

In the vein of KonMari and inspired by the £200 bin. I feel the need to know what else I'm missing out finding joy from otherwise boring yet necessary household crap

I don't have the iron station yet but think it would make my heart sing compared to tripping over how my ironing board iron and laundry is currently stored

Please share yours

Just ordered a Window Vac because of this thread!

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 14:28

This looks the most similar although I think the Kallax one might also work (see pic)

Thank you Butterflies :) that does look like it would work. I think I need a trip to Ikea!
This thread is dangerous for my bank account

TheCrumpettyTree · 10/04/2016 15:00

I don't iron enough ever to justify an ironing station.

TheBoysMamma · 10/04/2016 15:01

Tbh I dont really either, guess I should hold off the Ikea trip

DisposableName · 10/04/2016 18:08

Just saw this article on Buzzfeed and thought of this thread. Some of the ideas are brilliant (I'm definitely making those utensil drawer organisers) and look what the final item on the list is Grin

In the interests of being less clickbaity...it's the JJ bin!

Paffle · 10/04/2016 18:19

Sorry, I have not RTFT so apologies if this has been "done". Interdesign fridge binz. I use them in the pantry and the bathroom cabinet. I see now they have a massive range of drawer, vanity table, bathroom and kitchen organisers. I could buy these by the bazillion.

Also The Holding Company acrylic shoe drawers. Not cheap but I can get 3 pairs of the DCs shoes in each one plus separate ones for hats, scarves, gloves, pacamacs and all the other assorted tat that children seem to need. And you can quickly see what's in each one. We have 8 of these in our hallway and it is a massive improvement on what we had before. So tidy. And I've labelled the drawers so everyone understands my system. God I'm dull.

Woodhill · 10/04/2016 19:22

Didn't know holding company still existed. I have some shoe holder things from 20 years ago.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 10/04/2016 21:20

I didn't know Holding Co still existed either, I remember drooling over their catalogue years ago.

That Buzzfeed thing - the magazine racks - genius! Both for veg and water bottles. We have a cupboard with water bottles falling out all over the place.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 10/04/2016 21:21

I was wondering about asking for this thread to be moved to Housekeeping BTW, so it isn't lost in AIBU which moves far more quickly, what do you think Butterflies?

afterthegoldrush · 10/04/2016 22:09

Long time lurker here - I need advice.

We don't have carpet on the ground floor. We have wood block (sealed pitch pine but it has dings in it - kids!), quarry tiles in the kitchen, encaustic Victorian tiles in the hall and machined oak (oak veneer on mdf) in the lounge.

Should I get a steam mop? If yes then which floors will be ok?

I would love one as I have crawling babies and I worry my old mop and bucket don't do enough (and it takes ages to dry)

Help me please! Grin

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 22:37

Heck whoknows move this thread anywhere you like, I'm just embarrassingly smug that I started a thread that's gone over 600 now, I NC all the time but Iv never had this much thread success Grin

I wish I could tell people IRL of my thread achievement but they wouldn't get it. Or how much joy household crap brings me.

Ooh I haven't visited Lakeland for such a long time.

Also am definitely going to have to get some clear plastic drawers. Then find some crap to put in them.

DetoxWithChocs · 11/04/2016 01:17

(I'd like to add that this thread is so good, it's drawn me away from catching up on The Walking Dead.)

Woodhill · 11/04/2016 08:49

I suppose we should be getting rid of half the crap so we wouldn't need half the storage gadgets itemsSmile

Nah let's keep cluttering. kondo doesn't do it for me. I love storage options.

purpleporpoise · 11/04/2016 10:43

I have some deep plastic tubs in my utensil drawer. It's a double height drawer and looking for things was quite frankly dangerous at times looking at you pizza cutter

SquirrelledAway · 11/04/2016 12:19

afterthegoldrush I would think that you could use a steam mop on all of those floor types - especially good for the engineered wood as it won't soak the wood like a mop and bucket will.

MrsHathaway · 11/04/2016 14:02

You can't use a steam mop on that kind of wood if it's the same as ours - and it sounds like it is - because it can cause it to delaminate. From memory steam melts the glue but warm mopping water doesn't.

SquirrelledAway · 11/04/2016 14:34

Our joiner recommended using a steam cleaner to clean the engineered wood floor - if you have one with a steam trigger then you need to use very little steam to lift away any dirt, so there is hardly any moisture and it dries quickly. We haven't had any delamination for the 6 years it's been down, but it may depend on how thick the wood layer is - ours has a 5mm wear layer.

We were told not to mop, as it allows too much water to enter the wood which can cause it to swell.

shovetheholly · 11/04/2016 14:44

I have two engineered wood floors. The one that has been steam cleaned (also on the advice of a joiner) definitely looks the worse for wear - it's something like a 5-6mm layer too and was not cheap. Even though it's engineered, there is still some warping of the boards, and in one place this has opened up a slight but noticeable gap between them. (It's supposed to be a smooth floor with no joins). I have stopped steam mopping and I now just wipe it with a microfibre mop (which isn't too wet) and Method wood floor cleaner.

You absolutely cannot use a steam cleaner on any oiled wood floor, for obvious reasons! For this, there is WOCA floor cleaner, which is unbeliveably good.

SquirrelledAway · 11/04/2016 14:48

It probably depends how often you steam as well - day-to-day I wipe up any marks with a damp cloth and only steam the floors every 3 or 4 months.

shovetheholly · 11/04/2016 17:13

I'm sure you're right squirrelled - I was doing mine every other day. I imagine the odd steam wouldn't do any harm. It's not like there was instant damage, but there was a cumulative effect over time.

curluponthesofa · 11/04/2016 17:49

I have bought the Vileda spray mop because of this thread! Works fine, although think I didn't dilute the Method floor cleaner enough this time. Fits really neatly in the cupboard and will save me carrying the bucket up and down. Grin

ButterfliesinSpring · 11/04/2016 23:04

I ogled mops today. I didn't intend to buy the mop today and I refrained but only because I wanted to ask you folks first has anyone tried the Eco-cloth spray mop?

Eco cloths bring me joy. Wondering if an Eco mop would give me that extra thrill beyond what the vileda can do for me? Grin

I am yet another cordless dyson fan! It's fantastic & I use it several times a day! I hated hoovering before we got it now I actually enjoy it as its so easy to use & satisfying to see how much dirt it's collected.
