to ask what household crap brings you joy?

In the vein of KonMari and inspired by the £200 bin. I feel the need to know what else I'm missing out finding joy from otherwise boring yet necessary household crap

I don't have the iron station yet but think it would make my heart sing compared to tripping over how my ironing board iron and laundry is currently stored

Ooh yes I want a nice one too. Wonder if JJ do a mini one?

candykane25 · 09/04/2016 12:53

^ food compost caddy

DisposableName · 09/04/2016 13:08

Just had a little search...JJ do indeed do one, though it is £28 and looks a bit like a coolbox if you ask me...

I was thinking of something maybe more this shape though these are out of stock at the moment (and random colours).

The hunt continues!

PickledLilly · 09/04/2016 14:26

We've got a kitchen caddy that's that sort of dustbin style. It was from amazon. I can't spot our actual one on there any more but they have others.

Kidnapped · 09/04/2016 15:15

Okay, so I have used the Karcher window vac now.

Really good actually. I reckon it took me about half the time as it normally does. We have big windows downstairs and it whizzed over them no problem. We have a smaller window upstairs that was a bit fiddlier because of its small shape but I think you can get an attachment for smaller windows? I just used Stardrops in a bucket and no smears at all, and I am fussy about my windows.

Only downside is I didn't think the charge lasted that long. I did all windows downstairs inside and out and then it conked out upstairs. Recharged it again and finished the job. Mind you, I only have the basic model so maybe the pricier ones have a longer charge.

Also used it on our shower screen and tiles and again it did a great job. All in all very pleased.

This is daft.
I'm Kondoing my house to minimal nirvana one thread, and writing a wish list of purchases on this thread!

clam · 09/04/2016 15:32

You used the Karcher on your shower screen? Did it get any limescale off?

JulesJules · 09/04/2016 15:39

Love this thread! I too love my JJ washing up bowl, mine' s bright pink. Also my label maker, and the quilted Lakeland jars.

I've now got a long shopping list too Grin

Kilner do this compost caddy www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Compost-Caddy-Biobags/dp/B008LTQVAA
We have one very similar by Eddingtons. The carbon filter stops it smelling, It works really well and I only replace it about once a year. The handle makes it easy to carry.

This is my one also, comes in cream.

Kidnapped · 09/04/2016 15:59

clam, it is hard to say at the minute. But it did look clearer. And of course it gets rid of most of the moisture from the shower room.

We live in a hard water area and a couple of days ago I gave the shower screen a thorough going over with a little steam cleaner (Morphy Richards, years old) and it came up great. Maybe the steam loosens the mineral deposits or something.

I was hoping that the window vac would prevent the build-up of limescale in the first place but that might be my wishful thinking. Time will tell.

TheCrumpettyTree · 09/04/2016 16:24

I have a cordless dyson and I must be the only one to not rate it hugely. It's fine for a quick going over the kitchen but it doesn't pick up big crumbs and I wouldn't use it to actually vacuum properly. Plus after 20 minutes the battery runs out.

SquirrelledAway · 09/04/2016 17:17

I ditched the Dyson for a Miele years ago with no regrets - the Miele cleans way better than the Dyson (that was falling apart after just a couple of years).

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 09/04/2016 18:14

My Dyson cordless manages big crumbs (including Cheerios) and I never need to vacuum for more than 20 mins at a time so it suits us perfectly.

Spermysextowel · 09/04/2016 18:46

JJ stretchy trivets. I have 2 & I think i need 2 more. Also love my Nespresso machine.

Spermysextowel · 09/04/2016 18:49

Oh, & the Bona floor mop thing. Kids are really keen to get the Bona out.

torthecatlady · 09/04/2016 21:24

Anyone got a recommendation for a small handheld vacuum? For doing the car / stairs. A lot of cat fur and long blonde hunan hair to contend with.
Would I be better off getting a cordless full size vacuum to replace my ancient Dyson...

curluponthesofa · 09/04/2016 21:31

Cat lady I am wondering the same thing - is it better to just go for a handheld (I already have a Miele vacuum),or a go all out for a cordless? Is the Dyson handheld better than other makes?

unlucky83 · 09/04/2016 21:37

Window vac and shower screens
I use one after every shower (or run of showers) on the screen and cubicle tiles - and it does keep the screen cleaner and also I've found it reduces grubby grout and mildew (but I don't live in a hard water area at the moment, so can't comment on limescale). It takes a minute or two.
The big advantage is it reduces condensation. If you think about it the water left on the screen and tiles dries into the atmosphere and then has to condense somewhere. Since I started the quick swipe over I rarely get condensation and was shocked how much water it did pick up. I know people use squeegees for the same thing (I have one) but find the window vac does a better job and is quicker.
The reason I bought another one was I wanted to keep one in the bathroom - if it was downstairs I'd forget to do the shower and in the bathroom I wouldn't impulse clean my windows downstairs...
Mine for the shower is actually a Leifheit which when I bought it a couple of years ago was on a lightening sale for about £30. And I do like it ... nothing wrong with it and it works upside down (don't think the Karcher does?)

However my downstairs one is a Karcher (the top of the range one -but was on offer at half price or something) - it is more lightweight and less bulky. It came with the smaller head. It also had a spray bottle wash thing (I think is a waste of time) but the real selling point for me was it has a removable battery - you can buy a spare and a charger - so could use it for longer. Then I've never run out of charge but my Leifheit one doesn't hold charge as well as it used to- the battery is on its way out and I found I can't get a new battery - so it is going to end up in the bin ...
You can get other makes now for less than £20 but no idea how good they are....but maybe for running over the shower for a trial they would be fine...

IntelligentPutty · 09/04/2016 22:22

Marking my place .
Ps I love my dysentery handheld. I actually enjoy hoovering now (and I didn't before even with the Miele).
Thinking I might get a auto open bin.... Push the boat out! :)

IntelligentPutty · 09/04/2016 22:23

Ha dysentery handheld!!! I obv meant dysentery!

IntelligentPutty · 09/04/2016 22:23

unlucky83 · 09/04/2016 22:51

Muuto button hooks ...I was in Ikea today (with 2 stroppy DCs came away with nothing but a couple of silcone spatulas and a new office chair SadAngry) however I did notice these www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90225793/
at £4.75 for 5! but they are really bright colours...not as tasteful.

curluponthesofa · 09/04/2016 22:52

Yes that would totally ruin the soft furnishings ...Grin
