to ask what household crap brings you joy?

In the vein of KonMari and inspired by the £200 bin. I feel the need to know what else I'm missing out finding joy from otherwise boring yet necessary household crap

I don't have the iron station yet but think it would make my heart sing compared to tripping over how my ironing board iron and laundry is currently stored

OK. I have cracked. Which label maker, exactly, do I want need?

rescueremedy1104 · 09/04/2016 22:58

I've bought the mop

Yep. It's great. Really really good.

DisposableName · 09/04/2016 23:14

Oooh, good work curlup, those compost caddies are more or less exactly what I'm looking for Smile Perfect!

torthecatlady we got a Vax handheld from Amazon a little while ago (this one which is brilliant and a massive improvement on the crappy Black & Decker one we had before.) Very light and portable, good suction and the charge lasts a decent amount of time. Also a much cheaper way of (at least temporarily Wink) satisfying my Dyson cordless craving.

Ours is quite a simple version but there are others with extra nozzles etc for pet hair, and I can definitely vouch for the power of the motor/suction.

Fishface77 · 09/04/2016 23:55

I have just spent a fortune on things I don't need and been laughed out of sainsburys for test driving the cordless dyson.
Packing cubes are my secret weapon!

curluponthesofa · 10/04/2016 00:07

I don't know if I can justify the cost of the Dyson cordless! I think I will get a cheaper hand-held for the time being.....

I remembered something else I am very satisfied with, rather sadly - the toothbrush area. I hate having toothbrushes on the side of the basin as they get in the way and I don't think it's very hygienic.
So ours are on a shelf unit next to the basin. there's too many brushes for one pot, so each child has their own cup - melamine beakers like this www.nettlegreen.co.uk/c-37-rice-melamine-cups.aspx but mine are different shades of blue & turquoise.
To stop the cups and toothbrushes leaving wet toothpaste marks on the shelf, I got a lovely large flat green ceramic glazed plant saucer from Tiger to put them on, very easy to clean (Sorry can't find a link).
It's just a small thing but it makes me happy because it all works so well and looks nice.

Crumpetty to pick up big crumbs you need the Dyson Fluffy version of the handheld. It could probably pick up small animals if you're not careful! This is the one we have for our hard floors and it's excellent.

CatLady the Dyson Animal cordless would be great for your stairs and is designed for pet hair. I now love vacuuming the stairs!

It doesn't bother me that I have to put it down to move stuff, tbh the beauty of it is that I can do little and often or just vacuum up spills quickly between visits from my cleaner.

Also if I had to lug a big plug in vac upstairs I'd probably vacuum much less!

I can't compare to a Vax or GTech as never had one but my friend just upgraded to a Dyson after my evangelising from her Vax handheld and pretty much said it has changed her life Grin

I have to say though the new Dyson cordless we have is a lot better than the old model which at the time we bought it I thought was brilliant but in comparison feels a bit weedy and seems to run out of battery really quickly. So I would buy the newest most powerful one you can afford. Which is why I'm rather excited about the new model shame my bank balance doesn't agree

The only thing that annoys me about it is that you can vac up liquid. If they can get that sorted then I'd be in heaven!

Hulababy · 10/04/2016 08:08

When we had our extension and were buying everything new pretty much (including the £200 bin ;) ) we got a robot Hoover.

I still smile when I am sat with a cuppa on the sofa and hear it cleaning up underneath the chair in sat on, or when I'm out somewhere and know t will be fine when I get back :)

I like gadgets :)

Afreshstartplease · 10/04/2016 08:14

Just ordered a Dyson! I am expecting it to work wonders on my mucky carpets

Hulababy · 10/04/2016 08:15

Ha ha. I also have the JJ wash bowl and drainer linked too. I have quite a lot of JJ stuff.

Also ridiculously live my pastel blue Smeg retro fridge. I built the entire new kitchen extension around getting that one item!

upthegardenpath · 10/04/2016 10:10

Another vote here for the Kärcher window vac - gets used on shower screen, tiles on walls, windows, car, everywhere. Streak free cleaning. One charge will do all the bathroom and maybe 2 big windows. Charges pretty fast though.
Can't believe some of the stuff I am seeing on here. Woah! God help me and my credit card, if I ever get a larger home....
I think that laundry tidy thing from Ikea, has to be next, when I have my first ever laundry room (in my dreams Smile)
Can somebody tell me if Ikea still sells it, as I can't seem to find it anywhere?
What's the verdict on the best cordless vac (Dyson or other), for hard floors, including wood and tiles?
Last question (sorry, you're all so knowledgable, I'd be mad not to ask!) I've always wanted one of this steam cleaner machines, can't recall name, that steam cleans hard floors. Which is best? I also have engineered oak floors in a couple of rooms, treated with hard wax oil but I'm guessing I can't use them on those....

torthecatlady · 10/04/2016 10:12

Thanks DisposableName, i'll look into the vax as a stop gap :)

torthecatlady · 10/04/2016 10:28

I just checked the model of our Dyson---- that we have...
Dc03 clear upright, apparently! Blush
Pretty much every part has been replaced at some point or another! And now it is beyond the point of repair.
We absolutely need a new one, but I don't want to regret spending a lot of money and regretting it!
My dad gave it to us when he upgraded to a new Dyson animal many years ago, he has since bought another and we're---- still on the dc03 :')

I can't seem to find out how old it is though! Grin

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 11:16

The laundry thing from ikea they bought a kitchen trolley from ikea and stuck an ironing board on top and baskets and painted it.

Iv been trying in vain to find out if anyone stocks something ready made and haven't found it so looks like I will be searching out the charity shops for a folding table and ironing boards to upcycle into one

The window vac - could you use it to dry laminate floors after mopping? Streak free floors?

OP posts:
SquirrelledAway · 10/04/2016 11:24

Butterflies you need a steam mop for laminate or wooden floors - lifts the dirt but doesn't soak the floor and it dries very quickly. You also don't need to use any soapy floor cleaners, so no streaks.

We had wooden floors installed and the joiner recommended a steamer - I bought a Polti Vaporetto and it's been pretty good, although the wand part is quite flimsy so I had to ditch one segment of it (although you can get spares).

unlucky83 · 10/04/2016 11:33

pug - I agree with picking up wet spills - I couldn't find a good cordless that would be useful for crumbs/floors and liquid spills. Even the expensive handheld one's that are wet and dry have tiny capacities for liquid - barely hold a cup full (cloth/kitchen roll would be easier!) If you buy one look at the specs carefully - the dry capacity will be much greater than the (pathetic) wet capacities.
Window vacs will (generally) hold more water -but then not sure if would be good for the squeegee bit.
For bigger spills I could use my big carpet cleaner or my big DIY wet/dry vac - but both are a faff to get out and both have hoses/internal bits that need to dry out (and potentially need a good wash out) before storage.
I started looking for something after I found a 3l bottle of milk had emptied into the bottom of my fridge (must have had a hole but didn't start slowly leaking until the top seal was broken) - it took ages to mop up with a cloth and bowl - but I knew f I used my big wet vacs I might end up cleaning them for ages and even then them stinking of rancid milk - even my handheld vax carpet cleaning vac thing had lots of potential traps for holding rotting milk (although I did use it for DD2s potty training incidents with less caution Grin!)

So I bought the most basic cheap cordless handheld wet and dry - just for wet stuff - it holds a tiny amount of liquid but is easy to empty and more importantly easy to clean well after use. It is a lithium battery so holds its charge - always ready for use. On dry crumbs it is pathetic but works fine on liquid. I have used it on another milk incident basically suck up tiny amount, empty into bowl -probably took the same amount of time but more pleasant than squeezing freezing cold milk out of a cloth. (And tbh I don't care if I overfill it a bit and broke it - because it was so cheap Blush -not very environmentally aware I know.)
It is very handy too when defrosting freezers - I chip off the worst and collect as ice then blast them with my hand held steam cleaner, collect most of the water in a bowl underneath but the bits I miss I collect with my handheld wet vac. (I did used to get the big wet hoover out but then needed to dry out the hose/insides etc -more faff)
(Sorry another huge post - but I do love a good gadget!)

Fizzielove · 10/04/2016 11:38

Where can I get that ironing station??

I absolutely MUST get one!

My favs are;
Window vac
Cordless stain
Kirby Hoover
Philips steam thingy iron
Baby steamer / blender ( I still use it and the youngest is 5!)

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 11:40

Iv had steam mops squirrelled and was considering getting another but I don't think my laminate liked them... The sheen has come off it I think. I went back to the traditional mop and floor looks better, but streaks

OP posts:
ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 11:43

The ironing station doesn't exist unless you make it out of a kitchen trolley yourself

Iv said it a few times now, still not believed Sad I wish they made them. I wish I had a workshop to start making them and selling them immediately actually Grin

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 11:49

This is on eBay but far less beautiful and less storage plus import fees so much better to upcycle and make one I think

Holy @&£* I'll make my own then! Great idea!

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 10/04/2016 12:57

upthegarden I've got a steam cleaner. Biggest disappointment going. I really cannot see why anyone remotely likes them never mind raves about them.

The flash mop I had in the past was far better (but broke and leaked fluid everywhere).

Those two items are the reason im getting a beldray spray mop (or others have recommended the vileda spray mop but that's twice the price of the beldray)

unlucky83 · 10/04/2016 13:13

If you don't do much ironing/don't iron bedding - Ikea do a table top ironing board you can hang up in your wardrobe apparently.
I thought looked like it might be quite useful for the odd thing (I've done the towel on the table before now to save getting the big one out but this looks like it would be better) - www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20242890/
I stopped myself as I don't really iron except odd big things like curtains...
What I have had for years and wouldn't be without is an iron holder - this type of thing www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90090384/ - don't know if you can with Ikea's version (you'd have to check) but mine you can put the iron away hot - so as soon you have finished ironing. No leaving it (and the board) hanging around whilst it cools -or worries about someone (small child) burning themselves on it. And no knocking it over in a cupboard as you hunt for something else. Mine is attached to the side of a big built in cupboard in the kitchen. (If anything it could do with a dust cover it is used so little ) Its above my betterware carrier bag store ... Blush

ButterfliesinSpring · 10/04/2016 13:20

The tabletop one is cute, i like to iron with a great big steam iron thing in the evenings watching the tv and the steam iron is a faff to lug out and put away. It's stored on top of the tumble dryer at the other end of the flat.

love this thread :)
I have the hand held Dyson, though now I want the new V8 one...
Also have the window vac which is fab for the shower
Also now want the JJ recycling bin

Does anyone know which trolley from Ikea was used for the ironing station? I can't figure it out
