I've just employed myself as my own secret cleaner

I am very slovenly when it comes to housework, despite reading every book/magazine/blog/mumsnet forum on the subject. Bizarrely, our house has got worse since I stopped working full time. I spent a few hours last week looking at forums and not cleaning to find out how long a cleaner would need to do our house and what they charge. Came to conclusion that 3 hours a week would do it but that really, I should just do it myself. I began to mention this to DH but he jumped straight in with 'We don't need a cleaner, I'll do more'. (He used to do more when we both worked full time.) Anyway, I got a bit arsey at him banning me from having a cleaner and argued the case. So then, because actually we don't ban each other from things, he said, well, if you want a cleaner go ahead and get one but leave me out of it. So today, while he was at work, I put on a really silly headscarf, set the timer and cleaned for three hours. Then I put the money I'd earnt in a pot. When he comes home tonight, he'll think a cleaner has been and when he asks, I'll remind him that he didn't want anything to do with it and will refuse to discuss it. I plan to be my own secret cleaner until he rumbles me. I've booked myself for next Monday morning. Turns out I quite like being a secret cleaner - I spent a lot of time hoiking up my judgey pants since me and my family the family I clean for are really quite gross. Please tell me I'm not certifiably mad.

my friend solved her domestic cleaning issues wither her H like this.

He didn't do enough. She had "high standards".

They decided to get a cleaner but then friend though actually I'd rather do it myself - so he paid her half the cost of a cleaner (they split bills equally).

Both parties were happy, home was clean.

The only thing I would change OP, is my cleaner would come on a Friday. :)

Sheer genius. Don't forget to give yourself an annual (semi-annual) raise, and a decent bonus at Christmas.

iPaid · 08/02/2016 14:07

As a po faced individual, i rarely laugh out loud at things I read but this had me chortling

Same here Grin

OP - how much time did you have to spend tidying stuff away before you let your secret cleaner in ?

Lweji · 08/02/2016 14:09

Also, stay off any crackers.

wizzywig · 08/02/2016 14:10

Lweji you cheeky mare!!

Lweji · 08/02/2016 14:12

Only if I ate the crackers.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 08/02/2016 14:13

Grin You sound bonkers in a great way OP. Sounds like the sort of thing I'd do Grin Grin Grin

LongHairDontCare · 08/02/2016 14:15

This is both hilarious and genius! If we could afford a cleaner and I wasn't so lazy I'd do it too! Grin

ZenNudist · 08/02/2016 14:19

Dh did the opposite. Hired a secret gardener and pretended he'd done it himself. No outright lie, just a 'the garden doesn't clear itself you know', 'have you noticed the hedges are cut back?' Comments.

One day the gardener scared the bejesus out of me when I was home. I was shouting through a small window : me: 'what are you doing? Go away!', him 'it's ok it's just the gardener', me 'we haven't got a gardener!' !!! Grin

PovertyPain · 08/02/2016 14:22

I have visions of cleaners around the country being made redundant and sneaky mumsneters hiding money from their partners. Grin

wonders how long it will be before OP is accused of deceiving her DH to the point of financial abuse

bessie84 · 08/02/2016 14:22

LOVE IT. Really made me smile x

PovertyPain · 08/02/2016 14:23

ZenNudest
That's fe king hilarious. You're husband sounds brilliant. I'm sure you had a good laugh after.

HSMMaCM · 08/02/2016 14:25

Loving the idea of wearing a headscarf to change character. The secret gardener made me giggle too.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 08/02/2016 14:27

If my cleaner calls in sick I make a point of pocketing the cash.!

OP - I hope you didn't try on anyone's make up?

ClarkL · 08/02/2016 14:37

A friend had a picture on Facebook of a notice board, envelopes with money in and list of jobs take out rubbish 20p etc for the kids. I'm pretty certain in this house I'd end up writing the envelopes, filling them, then just doing it myself and creating more work....So I think im just going to copy you OP and pay myself without the middle man :)
pssst just to share, cos i'm mean.
My daughters room is a pigsty, for weeks I threatened her and in the end bagged up everything and put it in the garage. She could earn 1 bag a week back by making her bed, putting clothes away, keeping (whats left) tidy and homework...she got a bag Saturday, then went for a sleep over so has had about 3 hours total this weekend in her room. Today I go in, contents of bag all over floor plus clothes and shoes.
So I've bagged it all up and popped it in the garage. Much quicker than me putting it all away for her :)

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 08/02/2016 14:39

Brilliant idea. Make sure you get your family to tidy up before your cleaner comes.....

Off with a bin bag to steal ClarkL's idea

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 08/02/2016 14:42

Don't forget to tidy away something that neither you nor DH can find for a day or two. And make it both your things, not just DH's socks that you hate, if you want to stay un-rumbled. Grin

theredjellybean · 08/02/2016 14:44

laughed at headscarf etc and if you can afford to stay at home and pay a cleaner good luck to you !

But if this was my DP i would be a bit pissed off tbh.

If one of you works and one of you stays at home...ummm...shouldn't the cleaning fall under the auspices of work for person at home , otherwise choosing to stay at home becomes retirement really !

theredjellybean · 08/02/2016 14:45

and maybe the OP's dh would quite like to be retired and not go to work to earn the money too

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2016 14:48

Call yourself Pristine Christine. Please

Brilliant.

Bin85 · 08/02/2016 14:49

This is going to go viral!
Great idea

Titsalinabumsquash · 08/02/2016 14:49

Genius op!

However I am actual cleaner and the place where I clean like to leave me "traps" to make sure I'm doing my job the shits so make sure if you leave traps for your self cleaner that she looks out for them and doesn't fall foul. Wink

mix56 · 08/02/2016 14:50

There's a lady on MN who needs one extra hour's declared legal work, could she declare herself her own cleaner ?
