I got one of those 3volutions and they are brilliant. You plug them in and they change their fragrance every 45 minutes. I have mine at the bottom of the stairs in the hall and you can smell it at the top of the stairs and in the living room too.

A bit expensive initially but the refills are reasonable.

NannyL · 20/11/2006 11:44

i dont "do" air freshners at all or synthetic fragrances where possible

i open windows as often as possible. and use FRESH AIR to FEESHEN my house at it REALLY works!

madmarchhare · 20/11/2006 11:45

yup, get your windows open.

morningpaper · 20/11/2006 11:45

open windows

don't have a dog

cremolafoam · 20/11/2006 11:47

I use this available from homebase and superdrug. Doesn't smell of chemicals or chike you.

RTKangaMummy · 20/11/2006 11:47

deffo open windows on both sides of your house

like in the east and west wings so breeze goes through

cremolafoam · 20/11/2006 11:48

sorry choke i mean

MrsBadger · 20/11/2006 11:49

open windows, even if only for 10min a day
clean more (took me ages to realise that the reason our little-used dining room smelled stale was because it rarely, if ever, got dusted or hoovered and was just filling up with dust)
take out bins more often (big kitchen bins are particular culprit)
check fridge for manky veg

lucycat · 20/11/2006 11:49

Keep it clean, and fresh air definately, ok so it's baltic out there today but at least your house will smell good.

Mine smells of Mr Sheen today - the sun came through the window and I realised that I couldn't see the TV or the puter screen for dust

Cappuccino · 20/11/2006 11:52

use homemade products (there's anthea's surface cleaner recipe somewhere, will find link) with essential oils in

you can put a drop or two of orange oil in water to wash hard floors with

why doesn't it smell nice? I wouldn't be covering it with some floral bought gubbins, I'd be finding out why

agree re check bins and manky veg; also damp spots

MrsBadger · 20/11/2006 11:54

oh yes, meant to add, if you clean with nice-smelling stuff the house gets clean and smells nice without air freshener - I use creamy beeswax stuff on our table and some other different, um, creamy beeswax stuff on the leather sofa - all smells very good.

charliecat · 20/11/2006 11:54

It doesnt smell nice because I have 5 rats that wander round marking everywhere. So basically it smells of rats piss...hmmm great. Have just washed everywhere where they walk and the windows are open..

ring the environmental health

you can't do much about rats with a Glade plug-in

Kidstrack · 20/11/2006 12:01

Oh charliecat they wander round the house pissing, surely not, do they not have a large cage! Sorry but i couldn't have them pissing in my house, as much as i love animals

JackieNo · 20/11/2006 12:01

(I think they might be pet rats - is that right?)
Sprinkle bicarb on the carpets, leave for a while, vacuum up.

TheHighwayCod · 20/11/2006 12:01

lol environmental health, sorry that made me lol

expatinscotland · 20/11/2006 12:04

yes, i think it may be the rats that are the cause of the pong.

they might be better off in a sewer or a close, perhaps.
