Rats are friendly and enjoy human company. More fun and friendly than gerbils or hamsters.

but smelly.

nailpolish · 20/11/2006 12:12

think i would make some air freshners with a few drops of nice smelling oil into some bicarbonate of soda tied in a musiln type cloth and put them in some corners of the room! Then just replace when needed

MrsBadger · 20/11/2006 12:13

it's seeping down the cracks in the laminate and bewteen edge of laminate and wall

if you want pong-free get one-piece vinyl rubber type floor that goes up the wall a couple of inches at the edges, like you get in hospitals etc

these people are good

charliecat · 20/11/2006 12:13

They are friendly, like having 5 puppys i guess. Sort of.
The But is that they are smelly.

still reeling at the idea you could come on here all smiles and ask us for fresh-smelling house advice

all the while you had five male rats pissing on your feet

JackieNo · 20/11/2006 12:14

Maybe you need some sort of large run with a mat like the one MrsBadger's suggested, rather than letting them have free rein in the whole living room. (Don't know anything about rats, so maybe this isn't a practical suggestion).

charliecat · 20/11/2006 12:15

Is fragrance oil the same as essential? my mum gave me a little bottle of rose stuff

expatinscotland · 20/11/2006 12:16

How about getting them neutered? Then they won't want to mark so much?

I think. I guess.

I mean, letting them out down a close would be cheaper, though.

Edinburgh has some lovely, historic closes.

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 20/11/2006 12:16

My ex BIL used to keep a pet rat called Vincent when he was about 12.. he was sweet. I didn't like his tale though.. too worm-like.. He didn't smell.. but there was only one of him..

He had several more after Vincent I believe. But they all seem to develop cancer when got to a certain age. Apparently it is congenital because of all the experiments done on domestic rats through the generations
