One of mine got cancerour tumour too.

I had girls. 4 altogether but only 3 at once.

Kidstrack · 20/11/2006 12:17

essential oils are more natural i think! don't like the idea of rose actully, usually vanilla, lavendar and a berry spice are quite nice!

puddle · 20/11/2006 12:18

A woman I knew who had rats as pets used to bite their nails for them.
Boak.

charliecat · 20/11/2006 12:18

Have had some serious thoughts about runs. But unless it was foldable then its not doable.
If they are on the sofa I cover the whole thing in old quilt covers and bung them in the wash. might bung them on the floor too. Save the hassle.
They have a hunker munker cage outsdide in summer but its too chilly for them now. Hence having to get them out everynight.

one things for sure don't think any of us will be rushing out to get a pet rat

fennel · 20/11/2006 12:22

actually i am getting quite nostalgic for my rats now. they have so much more character than other rodents. might get some for the dds when they are older.

charliecat · 20/11/2006 12:24

If you dooo get girls. they dont do the marking even half as much.

we have a bunny, he thinks he is a cat, very friendly and clean, he is toilet trained but no longer is he allowed indoors, he went on the rampage and cut off the computer,tv,hi fi all by chewing through the wires. I do love animals

puddle · 20/11/2006 12:25

I know batters - I have a bit of a rat phobia and she had a pic on her desk of her kissing her rat. On The Mouth. Bleuch.

SherlockLGJ · 20/11/2006 12:28

Serve them up with some faver beans and a nice chianti.

satinshoes · 20/11/2006 12:52

lol @ this thread. Gave me a giggle after a very stressful hour.

eveimatildasmum · 20/11/2006 12:53

Have you re read this thread? its the funniest thing I have read in ages - rat whisperer you are definatley living in an alternate dimension - I though rat pee caused viles disease?

nailpolish · 20/11/2006 12:59

how can you lot suggest candles and essential oils??

dont get rid of the source of the smell, rat piss in your floorboards, mask it with a candle??

as dh says about air fresheners

"now the loo doesnt smell of farts, it now smells of flowery farts"

maybe something like that oust would be better, or neutrogena, that gets rid of the smell not just mask it

or get rid of the rats

Cappuccino · 20/11/2006 13:08

you could buy little lavender bags and tie them round their necks with pretty ribbon

and put perfume in their drinking water

I have pet rats, they are caged but only as we have a cat too. They are sweet, lovely natured little darlings, far more friendly than hamsters, mice, gerbils, etc. if brought up properly.
On the smelly side of things, i use oust, and have a plug-in, which keeps nasty smells at bay, whilst you keep up with the cleaning up of muck

nailpolish · 20/11/2006 14:28

i dont like rats but i think its cruel to keep animals in a cage

hana · 20/11/2006 14:32

just open you windows on a regular basis!!
or have fresh lilies all the time, lovely scent!
not a big fan of synthetic scents

cupcakes · 20/11/2006 14:46

This thread is hilarious.
Especially charliecat insisting that there are worse pets to have (those that you have to scoop up their poo).
I would much, much, much rather have to scoop up my dog's poo than have rat wee soaked laminate.
Do they poo in their cage?
Is it possible to housetrain them???

fennel · 20/11/2006 14:49

I don't think my female rats weed or pooed outside their cage. it was just the cage which got smelly and that could be cleaned. but it was a while ago and maybe I'm forgetting.

charliecat · 20/11/2006 15:56

Ive ratsat female rats recently and they didnt wee or poo out of the cage...sigh. Mine dont tend to poo, its just the dribbly weeing....I might stick a plaster over thier bits while they are out!!
