note to self: stick to female rats only

FireFaerie · 20/11/2006 19:20

Just to clear something up, when i say caged, they actually have an incredibaly large, one off 'luxury complex' with a tree stump, hammock, dark house, light room, etc.. They are certainly not 'caged' in the 'hamster' sense.

You can housetrain a rat, to a certain degree.. how successful you are though, is down to the personality of the ratty in question.

Rats are mis-represented, IMO. It is too easy to think of a Rat hanging out in a sewer, full of 'The Black Plague'. This is far from the truth of the domesticated rat.

Kidstrack · 20/11/2006 19:31

You know someones going to invent a rat nappy theres money to be made

buktus · 20/11/2006 19:37

my mil walked fresh tarmac all the way through the house the other day, so i googled and found out that eucalyptus oil gets it off, it works brilliantly but the house smells like a giant karvol capsule you could try using just a little bit it does smell quite clean

charliecat · 20/11/2006 19:39

My whole day has been surrounded by smells. Walked back in from picking the kids up from school and the whole place stank of sick. Human Fresh Sick.
OMG...sniffing eeevvveerrrryyyyywhhheeerreee....
Turns out the cheap wrapping paper I brought for the kids pressies smells of sick WTF????
The pressies look great but they stink.
DP somehow had wrapped them up and hadnt noticed.

Charliecat, I used to give my rat a bath in the sink every month. It helps to clean them as they do spray each other as well.

They are very intelligent animals and are very rewarding to have as pets. They love attenion, has personality and don't hump your leg or catch birds.

iwouldloveadollypleaseSanta · 20/11/2006 20:24

maybe the smell of the wrapping paper and the rats will cancel each other out i like rats they are very intelligent creatures - i find that citrus essential oil in a burner cuts through smells quite well.

morningpaper · 20/11/2006 20:27

I've had wrapping paper like that before

It's like cheapy plastic stuff

just AWFUL

honestly, have you no idea what shape a rat's bum is? maybe a pooh bear trouser might fit, they are pear-shaped.

They go all over the place. that's what rodents do when you let them exercise around the room. it's quite endearing, having them tootling around the place.

OPEN ALL THE WINDOWS FOR AN HOUR DAY EVEN WHEN FREEZING!!!!!!!!!

booradley · 20/11/2006 20:56

Haven't read all the posts but can sympathise, I have 5 cats and about a million litter trays but still used to have cat pee smells (lovely!)

I got timed air spray things above my front door and upsairs hall and kitchen. You see them on tv adverts and whilst they have to be 6 foot up, they really do work.

opinionsrus · 20/11/2006 21:22

Just read about the rats.

That to me is absolutely minging - cannot stand any animal smell - and rats god whats that all about???

I have rats as well. There have been various discussions about this on the Fancy Rat Forum over the past few months. Some people swear by Tap-a-drop which can be purchased online from the Rat Warehouse or Acrorats. One problem is that many air fresheners can be bad for the rats' respiratory systems.

i can only assume that this thread is a wind up. someone asking how to get their house smelling fresh when they let rats run round fouling is too revolting and the answer so obvious that i cannot believe anyone would post it. well done charliecat for getting everyone going.

WideWebWitch · 24/11/2006 19:58

at cappucino and cod on this thread! Thanks Mp's roundup for directing me here.
