is your heating on yet?

Please help me solve an argument. I have a jumper on. It's chilly but not too cold yet. My flatmate thinks I should be happy to spend a fortune on heating. It's only early October but I'm not sure if it's just me being a Northerner!

We don't turn it off - we just have the thermostat turned down. It felt a bit chilly today, so I turned it up to 17, but it hasn't come on so cardies and long sleeve T's are good enough for now. TBH I'm the only one who's chilly, and that's just because I'm tired and a bit premenstrual. DH is sitting opposite me in a t-shirt and boxers so it can't be that cold!

Chocoholic35 · 07/10/2014 22:02

Ours is off I am sat here in pjs and thermal socks with a blanket over me. The rest of the house is in shorts. It will not go on until they says it's cold.

I have heard rumours that we are in for a hard winter so I'm keeping it off as long as possible.

mausmaus · 07/10/2014 22:03

not on yet but we have fan heater in the kitchen to take the chill of in the mornings.

Bunbaker · 07/10/2014 22:05

The first competitive who has put their heating on thread of the winter.

How many more martyrs to cold are there on MN?

Topseyt · 07/10/2014 22:07

Not on here yet. We just haven't really felt the need for now, though I always waver when we get to the in-between stage of the year where the washing won't dry for ages without the radiators coming on, yet I don't want to use the dryer for every load.

W don't go by the month or time of year for putting it on. We go by the temperature and how comfortable or otherwise we feel. We have been known to occasionally use it during a cool, damp summer.

When we do decide it is going on I just set the room thermostat to 17/18 degrees. Everything stays just about right then. Comfortable but not too hot, and it doesn't seem to come on too often.

gamerchick · 07/10/2014 22:09

No heating on here. It makes me feel bunged up but I do put it on for an hour in the morning, this house gets dank and foisty if I don't.

The snake tank gives off decent heat in the living room anyway.

JamaicanMeCrazy · 07/10/2014 22:20

Bunbaker I wish I had the choice to be a martyr Blush

Ilovenicesoap · 07/10/2014 22:21

Not a martyr bun i live dont live in the north or scotland…

Ilovenicesoap · 07/10/2014 22:22

Extra live crept in there!

Northumberlandlass · 07/10/2014 22:23

In Northumberland here! It was 2 degrees this morning, inside the house was ok. Jumpers & extra socks at the moment!

TheSpottedZebra · 07/10/2014 22:27

Nope. And I still have summer duvet on, although I did put a light throw across my feet last night.
DCs are on bigger duvet as of Sunday.

DialsMavis · 07/10/2014 22:35

Nope, but we are in south east, under blankets in the evenings though and windows were shut last night for the first time. Opening them again tonight to ward off condensation. Moving to a warmer house on December the 1st and can't wait Smile

givemushypeasachance · 07/10/2014 22:40

Bristol here. Just stuck it on for half an hour last night and again tonight to take a bit of the chill off the house. Dug out my collection of crochet blankets to stick on the bed as well, since I was cold when I woke up this morning. Think it being damp doesn't help; crisper dry cold is nicer!

grumpasaur · 07/10/2014 22:44

Heating on here (as well as slippers and a jumper!)

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 07/10/2014 22:50

No. Not under control thyroid, I feel the cold more than most. Actually had windows open most of the day, will have window open in the bedroom tonight. But do appreciate the differences in this weird island in which we live.

BreadForBrains · 07/10/2014 23:12

It's always on as I'm always cold. Have it set to about 22 constantly.
Southern and soft.
I like being comfortable at home and am sat in a vest top and little shorts with a blanket in front of the fire. Dp finds it hot so we compromise and keep the bedroom window open a crack.

shesawseashellsontheseashore · 07/10/2014 23:13

Yes, on low at the mo but only in the last day or so.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 07/10/2014 23:15

No. I'm absloutely roasting. I still sleep with the windows open.

LilMissSunshine9 · 07/10/2014 23:26

My heating goes on when my nose feels cold. At the moment a thick jumper and jogging pants are enough but I have a big blanket by the sofa ready and waiting.

Mandy2003 · 08/10/2014 02:48

I really wanted to hold out till November but DS has a cold so I relented and put it on today.

frankie80 · 08/10/2014 18:22

those who say people managed in the past - actually no, cold related illnesses/deaths were higher then. I should know - having many relatives dying of pneumonia and such.

ilovechristmas1 · 08/10/2014 18:41

just out of interest what temp do most people set the thermostat at in the house??

ilovepowerhoop · 08/10/2014 18:44

mine is around 18 degrees. We are on a timer too so it is off for much of the day and overnight

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 08/10/2014 18:50

Usually between 18 and 21 degrees - thermostat is in the hall by the kitchen, whereas all the living areas have big windows and outside walls so there can be a big discrepancy in temperatures.

JadeJ123 · 08/10/2014 18:52

No, am sitting under a fluffy blanket
