June know it's the fledgling flyers?

A warm welcome to the June Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If the state of your house is getting you down, this is the thread where we follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style Wink) with lots of chat and support along the way and where lace-up shoes are definitely optional.

A huge thank you to Linzer for keeping us all on track so splendidly during May and thank you to DroitwichMummy for the thread title.

As usual, we will be following the Flylady three-pronged approach:

  1. Baby-steps (a daily step to establish routines)
  2. Then baby-steps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. (And once decluttered) babysteps + daily missions

If you are feeling overwhelmed by clutter and mess, you can make a difference, one step at a time.

For more information, have a look here. You don't need to sign up to Flylady e-mails (we advise you not to do so in fact - you will be overwhelmed - all the information you need can be gleaned from this thread).

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

Very quick post tonight as need to finish kitchen and get to bed at a sensible time.

Have been rather caught up with iCal and the ability to write TO DO lists which I can then tick off. The novelty will wear off soon I'm sure :)

Have got quite a lot done today though very little Flying I feel - camping stuff still all over the place and house looks bit like we brought a bomb home with us Shock Must try harder on the house tomorrow.

Night all

BlueEyeshadow · 01/06/2011 22:39

Had a reasonable day, and did manage some dusting while the boys pottered about "helping" to sweep with the dustpan and brush (DS2) and the broom (DS1). Not sure what we're going to do all day tomorrow though. The reason they're home is that the cm's mum has died. :(

Lost track of the rest of the thread, but waves to all and retires, tired.

ColdHeartedBitch · 02/06/2011 01:19

Am ok. The bad news wasnt entirely unexpected just the timescale has shifted and i had to make a difficult decision. I have been out and had a calming evening. It has been nice but late.

Prior to this i had managed to do the washing so that is all good. Will have to see what tomo brings.

Look after yourself and hopefully see u about tomo. i might however decided to hide in the duvet and ignore its existance. Just because i can.

Toffeefudgecake · 02/06/2011 06:54

Went to bed early, which means we were awake early. Can't tidy up the messy kitchen because it will wake DS2 (his bedroom is above), so I have the perfect excuse to have a quiet cup of tea in bed. Now and again, DH and I can hear DS2 stir and we both hold our breath, hoping he's not going to wake up yet. It's so lovely to have some peaceful time to ourselves for once.

Re: children growing up. DS1 fell asleep in my arms at bedtime last night and I was thinking, sadly, that I probably have only about two to three years left of him wanting to do that Sad. Can't imagine him wanting to do that when he's a teenager.

Linzer - that caretaker was very rude. It was rude to stand there drinking his tea whilst you waited outside - and even ruder to ask if you had rung both bells. The lack of gratitude from the teacher can't be helping. They are very lucky to have you. You are really helping the children though - I suppose you have to focus on that. Hope you and DC have a good time in Playmobil Land today (I would love that!).

Pushme - I have just noticed that the root-canal treatment costs £390 Shock. Then there is more to pay for the filling. But, as you say, the NHS just want to whip the tooth out. I need to go back to work just to pay for my teeth!

CHB - sorry you had bad news Sad.

Ellie - Your story about DD's tantrum made me laugh, although it must have been awful for you. I always find it comforting to read about other children's tantrums as DS1 used to have quite spectacular ones - and still does, sometimes.

BlueEyes - poor CM Sad.

Oh dear, I can hear DS2 stirring again. Quick list for today:

Sort out the kitchen
Put washing away
Send article to Mum
Get new credit card (I cut it up, but now I need it!)
Do skin test for hair colour on Sat
Book holiday insurance
Invite DS2's friend over to play
Repot tomatoes
General tidy up

No time for any more messages, sorry. Hope you all have a good day.

NettieSpaghetti · 02/06/2011 07:01

I'm asleep, it's dh turn this morning!

Ellie I did get take that tickets but had to make a difficult decision, go to Take That and have extended family holiday when should be doing Relay for life. Or vice versa, so no take that for me Sad had to sell ticket Sad. I spent a long time researching possibility of leaving holiday house in Scotland in middle of week to come back down to wembley for concert and back! But funnily enough it wasn't going to work. Have a fab time, grab robbies bum for me. Grin

feetheart how long did you go camping for?
blue aw poor cm. Hope dc are helpful today too.

(puts hands up) as another crown filled, false tipped, false teethed, vampire here! I cannot even count how much money i have spent on
My teeth over the years. I don't mind root canals just hate sound of drill.

Right my list

Get up
Clear breakfast things
Tidy away dc pjs
Make sure they are dressed for nursery
Washing mountain move on
Dw on
Get ready for work whilst dh drops dc at nursery
Work
Home dc fed and bed
Gym
Put away shopping delivery
Me fed and bed

If I look at missions that will be a miracle.

Hope you all have a lovely day with at least a smattering of sunshine. Grin

elliepac · 02/06/2011 07:12

Morning all!

Here's hoping DD wakes up in a better mood today! DH has gone to work, DS slept over at BF's house last night so all is quiet here in elliepac towers. Am just sipping coffee before considering getting moving!

nettie Sad about the concert. I shall enjoy it on your behalf Wink.

toffee I know what you mean about keeping quiet. I really need a wee right now but as we only have the one toilet upstairs next to DD's room I am trying to employ the bladder of steel to have an extra half hour's peace and quiet Grin

Waves to chb under her duvet. Glad you are ok.

blue your poor CMSad

List for today looks like this:-

Wait in all day for a delivery from Amazon of DH's new Xbox which probably won't arrive until 5pm. Grrrrr.
Ironing.
Putting away
Collect clothes for ebay (am going to try selling the DC's clothes on ebay for the first time)
General tidy
Relax in garden this afternoon in lovely sunshine
Pick DS up
Cook dinner

Am going to get going now. Back later!

feetheart · 02/06/2011 08:16

Morning all, lovely sunny day here so good drying weather (I sound like my mum Shock). Hoping to get backlog of camping washing done - we were away for 10 days in a sunny, windy farmer's field Nettie and it was BRILLIANT :)

Need a quick list as have to try and get DC up, fed and out by 9.30am. As they haven't stirred until then for most of the past fortnight it could be 'interesting'

  • Send copy of letter to accountant - done
  • Finish unpacking car from camping trip Blush
  • Morning routine + washing. washing, washing
  • DC to optician
  • Work - monthly invoices
  • Insurance for flat
  • Try to plan Father's Day crafts for school Assoc
  • Put everything from camping trip AWAY
  • Watch French Open with DS whilst DD has friend to play :)

That should do for now.
Sorry for lack of personals again, I'll just wave frantically and grin :o

NettieSpaghetti · 02/06/2011 08:22

Ellie yes I hope she does wake up happy. Enjoy take that and I want a blow by blow account please. Grin or a robbie did this or robbie did that report Wink

feetheart wow sounds lovely. I only did 3 nights and dd was asking to come home.

swanriver · 02/06/2011 09:17

It's a beautiful blowy morning here, and I'm floating around in my white nighty pretending to be on holiday, and drinkign coffee.
unfortunately the children aren't dressed yet and I've foolishly arranged things today so that I have to rush around dropping people off and picking them up. Rats.
And kitchen is definitely suffering from morning after the night before wine women and song..and boxed sets.

Dh has put the recycling out for me - There You See! It Only Takes 10 Minutes! He loves half term...He has decided to take tomorrow off as he's at a Book Fair this weekend working.

I have a horrid feeling I should be organising some playdates, but I can't face it. One child comign round this morning already, the one who broke ds's lego last time Hmm

swanriver · 02/06/2011 09:29

Feet lifeis simpler in a field isn't it? I think that's what camping is, just less choice, freeing up your soul.

Toffee - I feel a bit like the tin woodman, in that my teeth are all now rootcanalled or crowned, in fact that's not much left that can go wrong!
PA and Toffee I am determined to have cuddly teenagers.
Linzer I've been reading about the Playmobil land...no rides, just lifesized themes, sounds heavenly.

I must do some clearing up now!

swanriver · 02/06/2011 09:34

also feeling v. worried about the vegetable crisis.
My fridge is stuffed with organic lettuce from veg box that I don't quite dare eat. I made cucumbers into soup yest, but resorted to ringing up the veg box company who said the lettuce came from France.
On the other hand, we should all be buyign Spanish cucumbers because of the poor growers Sad who are goign to go bust. Wish someone would pronounce, not just rumours.

Stillchuckingit · 02/06/2011 09:47

Oooh 19 posts since last night's step! Sorry! In very relaxed mode here - two days off for Ascension holidays ... dh has gone to work but dd and I have only just finished getting washed and dressed (we have been playing snakes and ladders since about 7.30 am though!!) It's so nice to have nothing whatsoever planned for this long weekend (apart from usual church/riding). I don't think that has happened for four months. It's lovely and sunny too and I think my iron pills are finally starting to kick in (even though I'm only taking half a dose) so feeling chipper and hoping to actually get some stuff done and finally get through Monday's list (blush)!!

Hands special dispensation from missions to Pushme and everyone Flying with a baby

[Admires *Nettie's ability to type while asleep Am loving the quote btw!! Good luck with your washing and data entry mountains - neither sound much fun so here's a Brew to get you through

Sends virtual Belgian-victuals-familiarisation pack over to Cinders containing chips with mayonnaise, beer, chocolate and filet americain (raw minced beef mixed with spices, cornichons and raw egg)

Enjoy your day Ellie and hope the package arrives early so you can get out of the house

Shhh Linzer don't mention the words "Playmobil land" too loudly please ...we won't have any peace if dd knows such a place exists [cruel mother emoticon] Hope you are having a good day though. Could you ask the school for some reimbursement from next September?

Funnily enough that's exactly what I said when I looked out of the window this morning "Feetheart" so I'm turning in to my mother too [horror emoticon]

Glad you are ok CHB

Sympathies to your CM Blue

Hands dispensation to Mummy injury blocks entry to naughty corner Smile

Toffee hope you're not in too much pain this morning

PA Grin

Waves to anyone I've missed out ...

Right, I'm off to knock this house in to some sort of shape ... but might do a bit of colouring with dd first ...

OP posts:
Stillchuckingit · 02/06/2011 09:53

Hi Swan now have visions of you wafting along a herringbone brick path in Victorian nightie among lavender bushes ...

I've been worrying about cucumber/raw veg crisis too

See thread here although doesn't shed much more light on things than is generally known I'm afraid

We're cooking everything atm which is a pain as I'm trying to lose weight and was eating inordinate amounts of lettuce, cucumber, roquette and salad in general [grrrrr]

However, ratatouille is a good alternative.

saffronwblue · 02/06/2011 10:04

Hi - is it too late to join for June? I have a very messy house which i feel oppressed by and hopeless about.

However today while my dog was being desexed I did shine the sink and shampoo and vaccuum the carpets. Now I have one clean room with gloomy dog in it and all other rooms are disasters.

I'm baffled about the shoelaces...

swanriver · 02/06/2011 10:27

Right, two children dropped at sports,
one child plus playdate here..ds2 has cordoned off the lego room with blue insulating tape

Saffron welcome - sympathy to dog, and welldone for shampooing carpets, a mammoth job ( I remember doing it when I was young and fit)

today - tackling
basic routines - clear kitchen, quick laundry swoop
put away laundry from yest
renew car insurance!!!HELP forgot about that, only remembered as I was driving to tennis
quick rescue of parlour and playroom
approach car decluttering with caution and a black bin bag

Toffeefudgecake · 02/06/2011 10:42

Saffron - Welcome. You are in good time to join this month as it sounds as if you have already done the first step (shine your sink) and the second is generally ignored. Shoelaces are one of Flylady's 'things'. She thinks we should all wear lace-up shoes in the house because it will put us in a 'work mode' (and you can't slip them off and fall back into lazy mode if they are laced up).

I hope your poor dog will soon be feeling less gloomy. Was he desexed in 15 minutes? Flylady says you can do anything in 15 minutes, you know! Wink

As DS2 was getting addicted to telly (my fault entirely), the telly has 'broken' today (I pulled the aerial out). As a result, I haven't been able to get on with any of my list so far this morning Hmm. I had to have breakfast with DS2, play a game, read to him, then set up an animal hospital for him. This 'no telly' business is hard work. However, he is now playing happily with bandages and teddies, so I'm hoping that I can get on with stuff.

Swan - I know exactly what you mean about playdates. I invited someone round today, but they can't come and I'm quite looking forward to a quiet day with just the boys. (I think...).

Still - have just ordered various salad stuffs from Tesco and am hoping it's all OK. Presumably they won't be shipping stuff in from anywhere unsafe. Will go and check out that thread and scare myself silly in a minute. Re: tooth. I am still feeling a bit battered, to be honest (all the drilling and injections, I suppose) and it hurts when I bite down on it, but at least I'm not having the constant toothache I was having before. I just hope it doesn't play up when we are on holiday next week.

Must go and do stuff now, as I fear the animal hospital will only have a limited timespan and then I will hear "Mummeeee!" again.

Toffeefudgecake · 02/06/2011 10:44

Swan - Grin at your son's solution to the Lego breaker.

DS2 has just asked me to fetch five glasses of water for his patients. DS1 has asked for a second breakfast.

Makingchanges · 02/06/2011 10:48

Sorry I have been awol for so long. I have 2 weeks left until I finish my teacher training course and everything has gone into overdrive. I can't believe there is so much to do, coursework, planning, resource making etc.

Anyway, my house has been seriously neglected and wouldn't look out of place on 'how clean is your house'. I'm in need of some 15 minute rescue sessions I think.

Plan for today.

  • 3 loads of washing - first is in
  • 15 minutes under stairs rescue
  • 15 minute lounge rescue
  • 15 minute bedroom rescue
  • 15 minute DD bedroom rescue
  • Post office to post parcel
  • Ring hairdressers to book DD in for haircut (DH has found a special children's hairdressers)
  • online shop
  • 3 days maths planning
  • Hoover throughout downstairs
  • 15 minutes attacking kitchen paperwork mountain

No chance on catching up on what I've missed but hope everyone is well and surviving the school holidays

Stillchuckingit · 02/06/2011 12:14

Yay Makingchanges good to have you back!! And congratulations on getting to the end of your course ...that really takes some doing ...

A very warm welcome to Saffronwblue and "ouch" re: the dog!! Not too late to join at all. Yes, lace up shoes are not obligatory and most people on here totally ignore it. Have a look through the first list here for the theory behind it and for more info. on the basics. We advise you not to sign up for e-mails (you will be inundated) this thread provides all the necessary details. And don't be put off by the barftastic cutesy language on the Flylady site - the underlying system is sound. (Hope you are not put off by our endless chatter too!! Grin)

Toffee Yes, from everything I have read and seen, the contamination has its origins in N. Germany ... think cases in the UK would have shown up by now if any problem. I'm cooking veg for the moment until they find the source as we are very close to Netherlands where they have found some problems (albeit a different strain I think). Worrying they haven't got to the bottom of it yet though.

Sympathies over "no telly" rule too. I have the same problem. So far today have played 4 games of snakes and ladders, drawn and 'coloured' for 1 hour and had 4 games of 'times table' dominoes (the ones that help you with multiplication). Haven't got a thing done in the house [sigh]

Should have arranged some play dates but rather pleased to just be "en famille" this w/e so can't have it both ways!!

Hope tooth pain settles down soon!!

Off to cobble some lunch together ...

OP posts:
Toffeefudgecake · 02/06/2011 14:11

Still - DS2 worked out that the telly just needed turning on at the plug and was perfectly happy to watch it in pink with the aerial out. In the end, I'm afraid I gave in and put the aerial back, as it was the only way I was going to get anywhere with my list. I was then able to whizz through several of the things on my list that had proved impossible when I was being interrupted every few minutes.

At least we had the morning without any telly at all though and I'll try to make the afternoon telly free too, until cooking time. I do enjoy the peace and quiet of a telly-free house (peace and quiet? Children? Hmm).

Tooth still very sore Sad. Anyone know if that's normal after lots of injections and drilling? I hope it's not going to be like this until I go back in three weeks' time. I want a holiday free of tooth pain, which is why I went to the dentist in the first place!

ColdHeartedBitch · 02/06/2011 14:28

Yes it is normal as it takes a while for the nerve to settle down. sorry. Just dose up on pain killers for a few days and u should be fine. Should be much better by tomo. Sorry it is sore though. That sucks.

PositiveAttitude · 02/06/2011 15:32

Only flying by, but just seen Swans post. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin I will hang around until your DCs are teenagers, then laugh and laugh and laugh!!!!

swanriver · 02/06/2011 17:30

PA too cuddly? draped over sofas with other cuddly teenagers (God forbid Shock? or the other way entirely?

Toffee I am despair about the telly here. This afternoon we got through till 5pm without it, but I'm so tired from all this exercise/bonding with dcs (although why sitting on side of the pool should be tiring not sure?) I fell asleep on the sofa at 4pm. Dd did my nails at 3pm, ds2 managed to potter around the garden, in a good mood since his friend came round earlier. Now ds1 has returned after a day of sports, and is playing on Wii, I haven't strength to resist.
The right sort of playdate is seriously worth its weight in gold - the only problem is that you then can't leave the house to go on any errands, pick up other kids etc...Requires thoughtful planning.

Oh dear now dd is having a tantrum, despite having found a caramel bar in the cupboard. She wants to go on the computer and so does ds2 [sigh] Different things...

elliepac · 02/06/2011 17:50

I too have turned the tv off. Maybe that is why i am drinking wine while cooking dinner Grin. Back later.
