Where do people find the great sofas?

Hi - we need a new sofa and have a budget of up to £2k (could stretch for the perfect one but would be also happy to pay less). I would love something along the lines of the one in the picture - it’s got to be really comfortable, something you could sink into, ideally deep red or burnt orange colour though could be a nice rich dark blue or green. Natural fabrics much preferred (cotton velvet, cotton, linen). Not something that shows every mark or where you have cushions constantly slipping down. Something that’s going to last us.

Anyone seen anything along these lines or got a sofa which is like this?

I want exactly the same! A big squashy comfy sofa. Hoping to steal ideas from this thread!

BrightMintTea · 25/11/2025 15:16

That looks very “squishy country house”, gorgeous! If you want that deep red/burnt orange velvet vibe, have a look at Sofa (the Bluebell or Isla in cotton velvet), or The Lounge Co. both do really comfy, sink-into styles that don’t go slippy.
Also worth checking out Tetrad on Furniture Village, their sofas last forever and have that cosy, slightly vintage look. I’ve seen a few similar ones on Loaf too, though they’re a bit pricier.

OneDayIWillLearn · 25/11/2025 18:10

Thanks I will check those out. Does Loaf have a good reputation for quality?

Thank you, @BrightMintTea I've lusted over Loaf sofas, (specifically pink velvet ones ) but MN shared wisdom is that they are dreadful, sadly. I remember a thread where multiple people came on to say that their Loaf sofa was the worst they'd ever had. I'll check out your other suggestions though.

It’s the holy grail isn’t it! I tried doing a reverse google image search/ chat gpt but the suggestions were nothing like that really.

That’s a shame. Has anyone any experience of Vintage Sofa Co? I liked the look of some of theirs but I’ve literally never heard of them (until the internet realised I want a sofa and now advertises me nothing else!!)

Honestly that looks like the Ikea Ektorp to me!

@OneDayIWillLearn I'm also constantly getting ads from them since I googled squashy velvet patchwork sofas. 😁Again, I know nothing about them except they seemed to be somewhere like Sheffield or Halifax which is doable for me to go visit. I'm not buying a ruddy sofa without sitting on one! (Have been caught out in the past by buying a sofa online that 'looked' good)

Independent shop in my town. Made to order, huge selection of styles and fabrics, excellent quality, great customer service. Not super cheap but value for money. And they offer a reupholstery service.

LavenderBlue19 · 25/11/2025 18:23

Posting to follow this too, I've been looking for a really lovely squashy, comfy sofa for over a year.

I quite fancy a green velvet one from DFS but am worried it won't last.

Please name it?

I’m really happy with my Cotswolds Company ones. Loads of velvet and traditional styles.

bilbodog · 25/11/2025 18:26

I second tetrad sofas - on my second now. First one lasted around 20 years.

Which ones please? I've sat in some but they seemed very small and upright, not deep or squashy enough for me.

SewingBees · 25/11/2025 18:48

Delcor. Not cheap but built to last. Choose feather cushions for max squishiness.

LibertyLily · 25/11/2025 19:13

Twenty years ago we bought two brand new Tetrad Alicia sofas that were similar to the one in your pic @OneDayIWillLearn. The arms were slimmer, but they were definitely squidgy, country house style and incredibly comfortable, although they required constant plumping. We sold them after ten years, but I wish we'd kept them - sadly they wouldn't fit in the little cottage we own now.

deeahgwitch · 25/11/2025 19:21

Sadly the velvet fabric on the top of the back of one of our Tetrad sofas disintegrated after about 14 years. It was at a big window that was north facing so not a huge amount of sun and the room /sofa would only be used about 3 times a year so not subjected to wear and tear. 🥲

curious79 · 25/11/2025 19:27

Look at secondhand sofas. Including on eBay or Facebook marketplace. When people move, and need to get rid of sofas, you can pick up the most incredible bargains. Think Wesley barrel, or Duresta, for a fraction of their original cost.

BigSkies2022 · 25/11/2025 19:29

We bought Rowan & Wren, unseen, (no showrooms, but generous returns policy) - I can't remember the model, but it's big, wide, squashy, low arms (I'm not keen on ones where you can't reach over to a side table easily), and it's great. My mum bought from Sofa.com - again, low arms, compatible with her arthritis, and comfy/squashy without disappearing into it. They do have showrooms, and good discounts. I'd buy from them.

Both brands use feather-wrapped foam cushions, so squish without collapse. Both on legs so you don't get that massive blocky feel - a bit of negative space under a big item of furniture helps stop it feeling quite so dominant!

This isn't country style but it is the most comfortable sofa I've ever sat on. I don't have it but sat on it in the showroom and didn't want to get up, ever!

Sprig1 · 25/11/2025 20:03

Sofas and Stuff have great sofas. I think they might be over budget but mine is 15 years old and as good as new.

Just be aware OP that Next sofas are currently delayed by 1-2 months on top of the 15 week lead time but they don't tell you you that when you order. We ordered our sofa on 10th August and are still waiting. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Happydays321 · 25/11/2025 20:36

I've got 2 sofas from sofa.com, 8 years old now. I'm very pleased with them.

Thank you! I have my eye on one but waiting 5/6 months is madness!

Nourishinghandcream · 25/11/2025 22:18

Where sort of area are you based as there are lots of regional/independent shops who may have what you want?

Based more towards the south, we love Lucas World Of Furniture in Aylesbury.
We have never lived particularly close to Aylesbury but in the past 20yrs we have visited them and bought two suites (they do national delivery) and have not been disappointed. They have a huge range from multiple manufacturers, most of which are top quality so they may have what you are looking for but I can see in this case the main sticking point will be the cost (and your £2k budget).

Check them out online?

Oh, update as I have just seen the previous post.
If waiting times are an issue then be prepared to be disappointed, think we waited some 4-5 months for ours (made in UK).
