Where do people find the great sofas?

Hi - we need a new sofa and have a budget of up to £2k (could stretch for the perfect one but would be also happy to pay less). I would love something along the lines of the one in the picture - it’s got to be really comfortable, something you could sink into, ideally deep red or burnt orange colour though could be a nice rich dark blue or green. Natural fabrics much preferred (cotton velvet, cotton, linen). Not something that shows every mark or where you have cushions constantly slipping down. Something that’s going to last us.

Anyone seen anything along these lines or got a sofa which is like this?

IKEA and I then get covers made.
You can do a lot to customise and elevate an IKEA sofa - you could recreate the one in your photo by having a cover made (there are companies who sell ready made covers for ikea sofas) and then swap the standard legs out for turned wooden ones or whatever you like.

Independent shop in my town. Made to order, huge selection of styles and fabrics, excellent quality, great customer service. Not super cheap but value for money. And they offer a reupholstery service.

I did this too. I found a shop in Belfast to make my sofa. Odd shaped and sized room - everything premafe was just off. Cost £700 for a two seater 4/5 years ago. It's exactly what I wanted.

And @OneDayIWillLearn I disagree, I have a Loaf three seater, smart velvet and as my sixth sofa as an adult, it is hands down the best quality sofa I’ve ever owned. Three years old and perfect condition, the smart velvet is extraordinary. Great service and after sales too. It’s my second most expensive one, but it’s so so worth it in terms of value. Look at their BearHug (mine), squashie or smooch sofa, one may be the shape for you. I don’t work for them!

Another fan of Loaf - we got the squishblocks in clever velvet and its lovely, so comfy I am always falling asleep on it. Had it for a year and it is still very springy. Its fairly low to the floor though.

We bought Rowan & Wren, unseen, (no showrooms, but generous returns policy) - I can't remember the model, but it's big, wide, squashy, low arms (I'm not keen on ones where you can't reach over to a side table easily), and it's great. My mum bought from Sofa.com - again, low arms, compatible with her arthritis, and comfy/squashy without disappearing into it. They do have showrooms, and good discounts. I'd buy from them.

Both brands use feather-wrapped foam cushions, so squish without collapse. Both on legs so you don't get that massive blocky feel - a bit of negative space under a big item of furniture helps stop it feeling quite so dominant!

The worst service I’ve ever had was Barker and Stonehouse, it went on for months. The sofa itself also had broken seams and arrived missing a cushion. The fabric also wore terribly. Super disappointing

Sorry clicked reply on wrong post!

TheGlitterFairy · 12/01/2026 07:46

Try the “Georgio” sofa at Sofology - pretty sure they have the colour you’re looking for too.

80smonster · 12/01/2026 07:46

Check out Sophie Conran, I’m sure she would do something that matches this brief, you’d need to shop during sale to get to that price though. Also not sure on your sizing, bigger the sofa the bigger the cost.

We had ours made at sofa workshop many years ago. Had it recovered in purple velvet a few years ago for c£2.5k. Much better quality than lots of the ones available now. Perhaps have a look at second hand ones and get recovered?

Lilactimes · 12/01/2026 08:02

I really like Cozmo sofas and they have a good sale on and efficient service.
Loaf also good.
Heals too.

Thanks I will check those out. Does Loaf have a good reputation for quality?

Do lot but a loaf sofa! They are amazing looking and quality is good but they are the most uncomfortable things ever. Check reviews - we had a bagsie- very expensive and very stylish and so deeply uncomfortable that I had to sell it on. We actually got knee and hip problems form it!! You’ll see lots of reviews saying this is the most stylish sofa and none of us sit on it. So it just stays pristine in the corner.

I miss Multiyork. We saved up for yonks to buy a 3 and a 2 seat sofa and footstool and then bought another secondhand on eBay. 25 or 30 years ago though. We killed them with wet dogs, parties and storage through house moves. Still have the footstool.

Reevester · 12/01/2026 09:24

Willow and Hall
& Laura Ashley (but seen others in this thread say Next is a long wait-who sells LA)

Look at secondhand sofas. Including on eBay or Facebook marketplace. When people move, and need to get rid of sofas, you can pick up the most incredible bargains. Think Wesley barrel, or Duresta, for a fraction of their original cost.

Yes, this is great advice.I got a sofa.com Sofa for less than £200 and had it recovered. That was 6 years ago, it's still good as new.

Reevester · 12/01/2026 09:28

Good lord do not buy anything from MADE . Com, just incase you were looking 😂

OneDayIWillLearn · 12/01/2026 09:34

It’s timely this thread has picked up again as my original plan to buy a secondhand version of the Ikea sofa we already have (that I found on FB marketplace) and recover them both with Bemz covers got stalled just after I last posted. My car developed a stupid fault the day before I was going to pick the sofa up which turned into insurance job and somehow it’s STILL in the garage 6 weeks later!!! My husband’s car is the wrong shape to get a sofa in annoyingly.

In the meantime we’ve got a new puppy though so I’m putting on hold getting anything expensive until she’s out of the chewing stage! Still looking on Marketplace (though need my car back to pick anything up) and browsing all your suggestions for ideS if/ when we decide to go for something more £££ if I do find one I love. Still planning to go ahead and get our current Ikea one recovered with Bemz too - I got the samples so just need to finalise fabric choice now really.

It all got a bit out on hold with the madness of Christmas and the car anyway but our next house project is sorting out the sitting room so it’s well timed to have an influx of suggestions!

We have sofa.com sofas one in Matt velvet the other in herringbone weave . Both have a really elegant line and are super comfy - the velvet one is particularly lush and the colour Bahama blue) has a real jewel like glow unlike blue velvet on cheaper furniture i've seen - a large 4 seater was just over £2.5 k. We also bought a lovely footstool

Mysticmaud · 12/01/2026 09:42

We had a liberty sofa for 19 years and a next sofa bed for nearly thirty years!
The former was exactly as you want but it cost £2k then.
We now have a John Lewis Charlotte and a second hand Duresta. I shall be recovering the Duresta.

millyv · 12/01/2026 09:43

I supply into the furniture industry and wouldn't buy a Next sofa, not the quality that you are after and very expensive for what they are!

Have a look at Sofa Sofa or Duresta, Alstons or Parker Knoll they would be my top quality made sofas then Ashwood and White Meadows.

If you were to look at DFS or SCS then be aware that SCS is now owned by an Italian company and as such only around half of their models are UK manufactured, the rest are Italian imports. DFS manufacture all of their models in the UK and use good quality materials....

The UK has a thriving upholstery manufacturing sector, it really is worth looking into.

wishingonastar101 · 12/01/2026 09:58

We have a huge, linen Loaf sofa... Over £3k. Had it 6 years. BAG OF SHITE.
Torn, stained, have to build it every day because it's basically a pile of misshaped giant cushions which get squashed as soon as a bum goes near them.

There fabric has literally split on one of the cushions. Feathers leak out of the cushions.
never again. Loaf can get in the bin.

TonTonMacoute · 12/01/2026 10:05

We have got the Sofa Workshop Caravaggio. Had it for 20 years, replaced the seat cushions a couple of times and also had to replace the seat spring units, which was done by a local upholsterer.

SW are out of business now but they often crop up second hand on eBay and Facebook marketplace. People get rid of them because other move house, any damage can be fixed quite easily if you have local upholsterer.

That’s exactly the shape and style I’m looking for! Classic and comfortable! Can’t find it anywhere right now. Had the DFS Kendal, which was amazing, but they don’t do anything like that now.

We also have the Loaf Bear Hug in clever velvet and can confirm it is cat proof and has done really well against stains (I have a sticky toddler). It isn't as squishy as I'd presumed, it's relatively firm but holds its shape well. I don't sit on it though, sofas are for lounging (predominantly sideways!) So probably not great for someone who likes to sit upright and has back/knee problems. Fine for us though!

Have had 2 friends enquire where I got it as they liked it so clearly comfy enough!

Think Loaf is a bit hit and miss in terms of comfort and durability dependent on the model

Naturesoaks · 12/01/2026 10:37

DFS Grand Designs Dunstable. I tried out so many sofas and this one was by far the comfiest.
