Lots of plants, long voiles (if you don't go for blinds - white) and definitely not a chandelier. If it's your thing, and as you like your sparkles in the rug, I think it could be, fairy lights could work well to make it less velvet wrapped altar.

Add in a plain or just herringbone/woven runner - pink would go with the walls and theoretical plants - and plain accessories, such as a fruit bowl, cloth tablemats, and somewhere for a couple of pillar candles to go, so it looks ready for a meal instead of bare.

The marble might pull a lot of the ridiculous levels of heat that'll be trapped in there in the summer, making it more tolerable to be in from March - September, which could also help.

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 16:18

I don't like the carpet, sorry! It's very dark. I love the table! I have a similar console table in my hall and I absolutely love it. Floor is wooden though so that makes a big difference.

I think you need some colour though. I'd have gone for a nice jewel colour, maybe a cobalt blue, or an emerald green or teal. Then put some pieces in to pick up that colour. Nice vase, placemats etc.

I love my console table so much that I've wanted to buy a similar dining table - only I can't justify replacing my wooden one!

You just need to break up all the grey. I don't think it's tacky at all - marble is classic so far as I am concerned and what on earth is tacky about chrome?!!

Oblomov23 · 11/02/2024 16:21

Not keen. But I agree, a different /contrasting coloured runner and table mats will tone it down.

Beamur · 11/02/2024 16:22

Better in daylight.
It needs warmth and personality adding. It's a bit grey and soulless. I don't think that the carpet helps.

Shiningout · 11/02/2024 16:25

Some really rude and snobby comments on here. Would love those people to post pictures of their houses so everyone can rip them to shreds, 🙄 op it's fine. You can accessorise the room and make it more homely and what you want.

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 16:26

@Shiningout I bet some of them are real sights to behold lol!

Bestyearever2024 · 11/02/2024 16:29

The CARPET !! Oh my eyes 🙈🙈🙈

permanently · 11/02/2024 16:29

It will look amazing under candlelight and your guests will be super comfy in those chairs. They won't want to leave!

EmpressSoleil · 11/02/2024 16:32

Some people just like tearing others down. Grey isn't my thing at all but I am a maximalist which on here is seen as garish and cluttered! But I love it and its my house 😄OP you've had some good ideas on this thread. You can definitely make it work. Come back and show us a pic when it's done!

Sidebeforeself · 11/02/2024 16:33

It’ll be fine once the lap dancers arrive

kittensinthekitchen · 11/02/2024 16:34

Thanks for the daylight pic - looks very different and much better!
I think the carpet is too much. Aside from the practicality of carpet in that space, I think maybe the pile is too much, and the colour is too matchy matchy with the chairs.

If it were me, first thing I'd do would be to try to inject some colour accents into the room, to break up the greyness, so a colour of a spectrum of colour for table decorations / table mats / flower centrepiece etc. Are you planning to put up any window dressings? If after doing that you're still unhappy with it, I'd unfortunately be looking at changing the carpet, perhaps an oak wood..... even a good quality wood effect lino/laminate type thing would look better imo.

FTR, it's not at all to my personal tastes, but some posters have been very rude and there are ways to be constructive with criticism that aren't offensive. It does look like a fantastic space.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/02/2024 16:36

It goes well with the carpet and chairs, to be honest!

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 16:37

@EmpressSoleil I've turned out to be a maximilist too and I love it!

I will confess to pale grey in my hall... it's stunning teamed with navy if I say so myself and plenty of pieces displayed!

People are so rude!

Skiphopbump · 11/02/2024 16:37

The carpet is too dark. If the floor was lighter or wood the room would look much nicer.

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 16:40

Sorry wasn't clear - I meant to say stronger bright colours for the chairs!

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2024 16:41

I'm not keen on the grey carpet and chairs.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 11/02/2024 16:45

Add some plants and some blinds/ curtains. Get a table runner. Remove all the clutter from the windows.

It looks very stark as it is, but you haven’t finished the room yet. I think that will soften the overall effect.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/02/2024 16:47

I think it's a cohesive look - the carpet, the table and the chairs. So it's not 'omg look at that table!'

However, I'd be slightly concerned about the curved mirroring in a conservatory. Does it get direct sun? I'd be worried about a lens effect and it starting a fire, which happened to my MIL with her bevel edge dressing table mirror and a foot stool!

Getthethrowonthesofa · 11/02/2024 16:51

Are you the lady who posted about the chairs? I think you need to have confidence in your tastes. You keep second guessing stuff. Buying and then not sure.

i will be blunt, grey is over, and the blue toned greys you’ve picked are difficult, as they are cold. But you were told this on your last thread. You like grey and mirrored stuff, that’s fine, just have confidence in it. The table is fine.

whirlingdevonish · 11/02/2024 16:51

It looks grey (obv!) and rather cold. I always think in a room which looks to the garden you need to link inside and out. So plants would be good. And some COLOUR! Maybe some blinds which would make it so much cosier at nighttime, and frame the windows and make them friendlier in the daytime.
We have a large entrance porch with big windows. We've painted the panelling Studio Green (Farrow and Ball), and it makes the transition between inside and out so much gentler somehow.

flatmop · 11/02/2024 16:52

It's not my taste but I am 1000% sure that my home is not to your taste either. It just needs accessorising to make it more you. A statement light in black (definitely not silver which adds to the grey) could help bring it together.

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 16:52

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut omg I never thought of that!! Least I won't have to worry about just the table if it sets on fire 🤦🏼‍♀️

Absolutely, some big green plants, floor standing, you get fairly decent fakes on Amazon, but not cheap, will add some warmth into it. The room isn’t finished.

Getthethrowonthesofa · 11/02/2024 16:54

Also are you getting some blinds in there? Blinds and plants and something bigger on the table Ie a centre piece or multiple candles and it will be fine.

AmethystSparkles · 11/02/2024 16:55

Have we not already had a thread about the chairs?

There’s no point asking on here because most of MN is going to prefer wooden floors, a nice rug and a battered wooden table and chairs.
